Because it is all so stupid. It has crescent moon shapes and a weird "ancient human / fantasy book" looking script. These are all things that modern humans think look mysterious and connect to things like astrology etc.
Also all the reacts when hooked up electrically and external electromagnetic stimuli is what exactly how a dreamer would expect things to work, but also exactly how a real engineer would design things NOT to work.
A real tool doesn't just react to random stimuli, it does something useful. So you design it to not be sensitive to noise.
Thus, yes, they are lying about just about every aspect of the thing and it is designed, not to do some function but to deceive. If a real alien tech showed up, the people who want a light show and sound effects would be bored to tears and real engineers and scientists would be beside themselves with excitement.
