A phrase a colleague used today describing some work this week: "embarrassingly large speed-up factor".
I then realised tonight that I can embarrass myself even harder because of an earlier quick-and-dirty implementation, for the purposes of getting a single component working in a sophisticated algorithm, coming back to bite me when trying to run a moderately realistic sized example. Good to catch these things on toy models, but a little sad that past-me had left it as a trap for now-me.
