East Germany wasn't dead.
This is narrative of the winners.
It had an industrial base, exporter of goods and importer of raw materials and was self sufficient in most sectors. Had zero debt!!! as it wasn't 'creditworthy' on capitalmarkets.
It's not about socialism, free markets, capitalism here.
It's about the way the transformation and privatization has been undertaken after 1990.
The GDR paid the whole German burden of the Whole Reich in reparations toward Soviet Union after WW2!!!
People living there (free or not free) rebuildt a whole country from merely nothing (after stripping by Soviets & WW2 destructions)
I remember a NY-Timed article where the "value" of the GDR in 1990 was estimated at ca. 2 trln. USD.
If properly privatized to 16 Mln. East Germans in Gold-equivalent this would make every single East German a Millionaire (ca. 1.75 Mln) in today's Dollars.
People in East Germany have been expropriated in last 100 years at least 4 times:
1923 Weimar,
1945-1955 WW2 & reparations,
criminal post 1990 'transformation',
Euro-area debasement (loss of Deutsche Mark) after 1999.
The country will be nearly empty in 1-2 generations.
Worst demography on Earth (in front of Japan). Whole Germany 2nd.
