Pet names allow you to chain nyms. If somebody follows me and I follow you, they could refer to me as just "Leo" and to you as Shawn@Leo and if you changed your name to "⚡⚡Shawn⚡⚡", my "Shawn" would still point to your npub. "Shawn" would be my pet name for you, regardless of how you name yourself today.
