My elderly father randomly started caring about protecting his privacy on the internet and asking me questions such as if he should use a different browser like Brave or if he should turn the location off on his phone.
This interest happened without any prodding from me, I had never really talked to him about online privacy and he only asked me because he knows that I have some computer skills.
He is just a regular tax paying citizen. This newfound interest from him and other signs in the world at large make me think that the massive expansion in government surveillance, data leaks, and corporate data extraction and monetization has become so egregious that even regular people are feeling uncomfortable. They are waking up to the need for privacy.
This is an opportunity to "expand the herd", and get more regular people to start using privacy tools. This helps normalize the use of such tools. Without regular users, the very act of using these tools can make you stand out and attract unwanted attention. If our friends or family ask us these kinds of questions about #privacy, we need to be ready to help them get their feet wet without overwhelming them. If it appears too complicated or inconvenient to protect their privacy, they may quickly lose interest. So start with the basics and work your way up.
