It's actually more accurately written as "mamser". That's how we differentiate between "mamser" and "ma'am/sir". Although in practice, no one really cares because mamser ma'am/sir is used in the Philippines as the English equivalent for our genderless and gender-neutral labels and pronouns like "sila", "nila", "kayo". It is __not__ referring to the person's gender.

Context is important. Cultural context most especially.
