The world is very lucky that, in the US, code is considered speech and is therefore protected by the First Amendment. This legal idea developed only in the 1990s
In much of Europe, as I understand it, code is classified much like an act of creative expression like a song. And therefore it's more subject to regulation such as copyright and so on
So we need to fight for "code is speech' also, not just "free speech", globally
