I think you would need to define the term animal before you could answer.

Something like, an animal would be defined as any form of life that has not reached escape velocity from it's basic needs and does not require something more in order to thrive.

We can debate what that something is but there is something, could even be the desire to create money which we can trace back genetically.

So maybe that's it... Humans are animals that passed a evolutionary tipping point.

We evolve to a point of evolutionary escape velocity but this is not necessarily a point of no return. We could have isolated subsets that return in the far future.
