This is a great essay. Three responses:

The concept of conviviality reminds me of The Timeless Way of Building by Christopher Alexander, which is a book on philosophy of architecture that made a big impact on me decades ago. It has a great concept of a nameless quality that is missing in modern things.
To me, he essence of modernity is a dehumanizing assault being waged on humanity and life. Brutalist architecture and fast food. I call it fiat culture or the culture of death. Over time I've found that it's roots go deeper than I thought. The developmental trail is a thousand years and goes hand in hand with usury taking over as the organizing principle of western civilization.
I'm sorry for broadening this to a spiritual critique of modernity, but I can't help but notice that this fits as a fresh manifestation of the same tyranny of slop that we are already hundreds of years deep in and largely inured to. Which happens to be my standard autistic hobbie horse.
