This is definitely true, have to balance features, quality and performance.
More features has been added since you wrote this, and improvements on quality and performance. Nostria 3.0 has just been released, please check it out. It's a big upgrade!
In terms of "For You", this will receive more focus in some days. The algorithm is very easy to learn, though I'll take your suggestion and add some description about it so users knows how the scores is calculated (e.g. how much a like is worth versus a zap to someone).
Settings/Algorithm is where you manage it. You can reset the scores, for individual profiles there, and it will re-calculate based upon your interactions with that account. It's a combination of both local metrics and what events (interactions) that has happened.
E.g. if you open a profile many times, this profile get higher score.
"For You" uses this plus it has a few Starter Packs, to ensure there is content there for brand new users on Nostr. I don't want these Starter Packs in the "For You" in the future, need to find a better way to have a feed for newly onboarded users.
