There's nothing obvious about why a Monarchy would care only about "their nation" insofar as it means that they and possibly their children are wealthy and comfortable. The rest of us Peons can go kick rocks.
Also, plenty of documented cases of monarchs who don't give a flip about their kids.
Also, economic calculation problem still applies.
