ZOMG hope this makes it across the protocol bridge... I'm in the same camp, donated to the Gizmoplex Kickstarter, and was roundly disappointed by the product.
It was just too twee, self-amused, and quite frankly, "soft"... It completely lacked the hard satirical edge of the best of the Mike era, which is my favorite MST3K run. I'm not sure what exactly made it such a milquetoast product, but I strongly suspect it was Joel "laugh with the movie not at it" Hodgson's influence. Plus, perhaps a sort of "woke" sensibility about the idea of "punching down" at bad movies from a position of cultural prominence conspired to water things down.
I agree that Rifftrax has mostly picked up the slack, although at times it's veered in the opposite direction -- too loud and bombastic, and lacking the cultural sophistication of 90's MST.
But Mike at the helm plus the MST3K brand? "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!"
