Fundamentally to your original point if I'm arguing narrowly if people should be able to expense first:
I think the argument is that you're supposed to do that at a corporate level on non flow through entities to avoid double taxation.
Cause eventually it all gets taxed as it flows to the individual.
The thing that's not distributed as income, distribution or expenses is taxed at the corporate level until its eventually taxed as a distribution or capital gains
