You might be able to use automotive spray filler as a primer. It's the stuff that's used to smoothen out car body panels, it gets into the layer grooves quite nicely in 3D prints, but it's nowhere near perfect.

Combined with sanding, it's a very good solution, basically the thing is sprayed with the filler and sanded until you start seeing the print's color. Then the grooves are full of the filler and you don't lose much of the object's side to sanding.

YMMV naturally.
