Humans are very culturally attached. Let's assume for a second a scenario where there is a watcher alien with advanced tech.

They would have been watching for a very long time and studying human behavior and society and culture.

If they were trying to reveal themselves to humans, they would know that culture is a huge part of human psychology. Observable history says flashy lights, colors, and patterns get human attention. I dare say modern humans communicate via those methods more often than we do verbally.

We cannot assume a non-human species' intent so inversely you cannot say that this is not within the realm of possibility of their intent.

So assuming they want to communicate, why wouldnt an alien species attempt to do so by appealling to humans through methods gleaned from observed historical culture? In fact that seems the most logical way.
