For me it was always like this: 90% of the progress happened in 10% of the time and the rest was running against walls, knowing that at some point I would manage to break through. Sure, the banging against walls experience was repetitive but it was never mechanically repetitive. It was always searching google, asking on stackoverflow and often the right question led to the answer.
