I believe the highest form of giving is the relinquishment of stinginess. In Buddhism, this is expressed through dāna—offering what is difficult to give, without expectation of return. One may give material things, money, time, love, or compassion to all beings. Such giving gradually reshapes the structure of the mind: the more one gives, the more the sense of “I” and “mine” becomes lighter and less rigid.

In this path, the highest giving is the inner release of possessiveness. Next comes the practice of the Five Precepts, and ultimately meditation, which loosens attachment to form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. Seeing these aggregates as processes—arising, changing, fading, and ceasing—again and again leads to disenchantment, dispassion, and letting go. What remains is the realization of emptiness: not annihilation, but a boundless openness or wholeness that some may call ultimate reality.
