It is the tamarind that gives it the bright citrus flavor, the fish sauce the dank funk and the sugar to balance the acid with some sweet.

If you want more sour, more tamarind
If you want more funk, more fish
If you want sweet, more sugar

I like a little less tamarind and add a squeeze of fresh lime.

I add a big dollop of peanut sauce to make it a bit more creamy from the coconut milk.
