The Soviet system was state capitalist with centralized committees of experts that decided what was essential and what (and who) wasn't.
Through central planning they mismanaged resources leading to rationing, immense poverty, famine, and arrest quotas.
The central committees in the US are government, banks, and corporations ("private companies" modeled after government.)
When covid came along all of these systems coordinated in the worst way. To me that sounds like the soviet union without the firing squads. I don't know if that "backs that up." 🙃
