I do really like this app I built. RelayTools-android. I haven't needed to do a release in a while cause it's working so well. I also have spare capacity on relay.tools if anyone is looking for a relay.
Spent all weekend fending off DDoS attacks from X Y and Z, just to keep the services up for my loyal customer base.
Someone recently told me they won't recommend me as a relay host because they don't know for sure if I'll be up for 3 more years. That was pretty insulting to me, like what? I've already been running 3 years and outlasted companies that spent a million dollars on saturating the relay market, just to disappear. So yeah, if my track record doesn't speak for itself I guess I'm just not shilling hard enough.

Actually was kindof fun, fending off the DDoS last night. Haven't really had that much excitement for a long while. Once i got back online and sighed relief that they failed to balloon my bills or anything and reminded me that, nostr shit is real shit. It may just seem like failure and a lot of GMs to most but we are building a decentralized network that has made 'the list'. Our biggest users are the ones trying to stop people from communicating. They have a lotta moneys, but we have source codes and many nodes.

Nostr1 relay operators, rate limits have been put in effect on all relays due to an on-going DDoS attack. Since I have never had to turn this on previously, I am curious if it will have any impact on you. If you see a 403, that means you are on an hour cool-down, and may have your IP blocked for longer if we start to tip over. If you see a 429, try to back off or you will be put on cool-down. The limits should be fairly permissive, but since we have never had to do this before no doubt everyone and their apps are used to unlimited rates.

for example: when I want to do a search, i go to a relay like primus.nostr1.com and I load a hundered thousand events or so into RelayTools-android direct and then fulltext search that. It's fast, it's customizable (by picking a relay you narrow down searching to non-spam) and works awesome. Phones are so fast and have tons of memory..

oh noes. they found the longform kinds eh? you can add in the brainstorm scores if you want (i know you were resisting this but, i don't see any other options really, nip05 is good too). its a big list of 185,000 pubkeys that have a score >0. or, you can use the nip86 api to manage the access from a script..

i also realized that most nip05 providers, don't return a list .. only single npubs so nostr1 may be one of the rare nip05s that can be used in a WOA (once i fix it). It's in the spec, but it's optional and I assume nobody implemented it because of.. i duno.

Yeah, it *is a lot of events. But, it's either that, or do it over API calls like I currently am doing.. I've since capitulated to using events because it will provide better uptime and redundancy when a 'provider engine' goes offline or something. I have about 185k nip85 events for my pubkey that I reference. I *can share this with others (ie, they use my calculations), then that's less that need to be published (basically they don't need to sign up). This is what I assume you are talking about is everyone using this same set of events. That seems ok depending on what you're doing. But why should I trust *your scores of app creators when I could make my own, or etc. It does seem like eventually you want to calculate your own perspective of the network.
For my use case of using these for relay access control, I have to read ALL the events, so none go un-used.. There are probably other use cases that don't need all of them but they're there. Mirroring 185k events to my own personal relay for saving it away also, seems like not that bad.. But, I deal with a LOT of waste on nostr relays so it's possible that I duno, we took some crazy pills already.

My whole job was/is moving successful business off of heroku,vercel,cobbled together wasteful crazy shit, to infra that is secure, cost effective and solid and passes all compliance that success company needs for soX and whatever other shit.. so AI infra, no diff to me, it's just another thing. Relays are the best integration point for building feeds. Generic clients that can display a feed from a single relay and reply via outbox do not have to concern themselves with the UX of building these feeds.. Jumble was a gamechanger and shows this model works well and is performant. RelayTools-android is modeled after this with more list and nip86 support.
Having a personal relay be your 'endpoint', gathering and computing this for you in the background is really nice. I've started modeling this in the lab, on a raspberry pi5 with strfry router.
The content is there, it's just drowned out by lots of noise, which can easily be filtered by hashtag curation and web of access.
Just look at wss://aquaticchickentheory.nostr1.com for an example of this working in the wild.
The relays act as layers or filters themselves and you can source those into another 'personal relay' where you build your own ultimate feed.
For example of a personal relay endpoint I am using github.com/relaytools/feedbuilder to construct an augmented follows+lists feed on my local network. It gathers everything I care about and I can read it directly without burdening my client with all these complex rules and connections.
So yeah, it's not only possible, it's the best way to nostr imo.

Are you aware ser that primal and damus not supporting nostr DMs (Nip17) is a dual force that has been very destructive to nostr retention? It's two years old spec, it's the standard..
People can't DM from these apps. They try, and get ghosted. They don't understand. They leak their metadata. Marketplace users are sad, humans are sad. Users are very confused. DM is an important part of social and we are dropping users on the floor with this.
I know you don't control what primal does but, this is just my timely reminder that it would help your companies #grownostr emmensely if primal upgraded to NIP17.
Waiting for white noise a few more years, when this spec has already been deployed to ALL other apps is a pretty big nostr adoption roadblock.

yah, it's weird, I've had times in my life where I want to stand the WHOLE TIME. I'm currently doing that. And the weird part is, it's ALWAYS been without a proper standing desk. I just cobble together a setup, and it's perfect. Maybe it's outside under an umbrella, maybe it's on my current desk with a nice screen mount that is barely tall enough. Either way, when I had an official standing desk at work for some reason I didn't use it. Offices just suck your energy away maybe that was why.
