“It’s complicated” is the cop-out answer, but it’s also true.
I’m currently working for an industrial-scale Bitcoin mining company, and their ROI is closer to 3%. But they’re at a scale where 3% is still looooots of money. My home mining is -infinity%, but I do it mostly for the learning experience. I’ve seen larger home miners make enough to pay their homestead’s utility costs by getting solar panels and batteries for free and old miners for cheap.
From what I’m seeing the key is the same as any other business: keep costs low. Buying $10k miners and building a $1m facility to house them doesn’t pay. $0 solar panels and $200 miners might.

It’s been done before but one of the problems was the Cashu token being too easily scannable / stealable. My solution is to split the token across front and back, and have a “helper” app reassemble it for pasting into your Cashu wallet.

I got it up and tested: It’s >1mbps download and upload, which is enough for messaging (as advertised), but you definitely wouldn’t be streaming media (ie Spotify) on it.

I signed up for one and it’s waiting for me to pick it up from the post office. The one thing I haven’t been able to confirm is how slow the ~$5 plan is. They say it’s supposed to be just enough for texting, but that’s not very specific 🤷‍♂️ If this morning goes well (and I don’t slip and die on the ice 😏) I should be able to pick it up, test it, and reply here again with results.
We have the Minis at work on our trucks and they’re awesome, but we have the regular plans on those.

The RCMP have no evidence, have filed no charges, the company is not Canadian, and they seized the customer’s funds, not just the company’s.

There are some that try; for example Cloudflare has a replacement for CAPTCHAs that doesn’t require any interaction from the user (linked below). It’s also roughly the same amount of work for devs to implement. The problem is that if the service goes down or the dev’s implementation breaks, the dev’s bosses will come screeching into their office asking why their paying customers can’t access the page and demand the security be removed, for convenience sake (ask me how I know 😶).
I guess my opinion is that when it comes to security and convenience, there is no middle ground for the majority of people. There are some users who value security and will seek it out, and some builders who will relentlessly push for it at all costs (lovingly tagging @npub12ct…c5ky, makers of the legendary Coldcard and other security-first products). Everyone else will make like entropy and slowly (or quickly) drift toward convenience.

When trying to pitch some users on not leaving their passwords on a sticky note on their monitors, I was going to use the example of "you wouldn't tape your house keys to your front door". But before the words could leave my mouth I remembered a past house-call customer who did exactly that.
The moral of the story is when planning for security, you either need to make the cost of shortcutting enormous and immediate (think firing w/perp-walk out the door) or more convenient than shortcutting. The first is obviously unpopular with most, and the second is a huge PITA for devs who will also choose convenience by offloading to MFA-in-a-box and shouting "let them eat TOTP apps and choose traffic lights!".
Damn, this started as a funny story about security and ended in mild depression... 😭

I’m sure many books have been written on the subject, but it’s been my pondering this evening anyways.
Matthew 25:31-46 is a section some Bibles title as “The Final Judgment” where Jesus describes returning as King and separating those who did Good from those who didn’t. One of the lessons commonly taught out of this section is that Jesus is instructing us to provide for “strangers” and “the least of these” as if we are doing it for Jesus himself.
A hotly debated detail is who, exactly, Jesus was talking about when he said “strangers” and “the least of these”. I’ve seen all sort of interpretations ranging from “literally everyone” to “specifically the Samaritans”. Personally I’ve tried to focus on “those who can’t help / take care of themselves”.
My evening pondering has been this question: What about those who hate us and want us to die? Those who, when given the opportunity, are killing our wives, husbands, and children? Are we to risk the lives of those under our (Biblically mandated!) care to care for them? Are those people “strangers” and “the least of these”, or something else?

Mini-rant:
Since when did running a lightning node become a rich person's activity? Exchange rates have 3-4Xed since I last set one up but the generally accepted minimum channel size is still 1M sats. That means roughly $5-10K CAD minimum in liquidity for a minimally functional node. I'm not trying to make money with this node, just use it for a proof-of-concept project. Yes, I could use testnet for technical testing, but if you want to demo to normies you need to be able to move real money around.
As usually, the solution to my worldly problems is to stop being poor.

Awesome! Much smoother Docker experience with FFmpeg now included 😅 I completed removed my v0.1.0 container and started from scratch and had no issues with the install or operation.
The only problem I had was with the mobile overhaul items; I'm not seeing any differences between v0.1.0 and v0.1.1 (screenshots from v0.1.1 below). The biggest issue is the thumbnails and video windows not fitting the width of the screen.

For a pre-release this is awesome! I've been contemplating the idea of self-hosting streaming since trying out zap.stream last year and this is absolutely a viable replacement.

- No performance issues.
System / Technical
- Setup was flawless except for FFmpeg missing (partly my fault for missing the requirement in the docs). Ended up having to build it in the Dockerfile without librtmp; error messages were vague but indicated an incompatibility with something in gnostream.
- RTMP stream key support will be a must for both general security and compatibility with some streaming tools (more on this in the UI / UX section).
- An admin interface of some kind for updating stream info would be nice, especially for those using Docker (its a pain to edit files directly inside containers). Though this would come with its own security load, so making it optional / separate / community-provided may be the better choice.
- Was able to stream from OBS on Windows and a sketchy app on iOS, and watch live and archives on the website on Windows (Firefox) and iOS (Orion).
- Was able to see Nostr stream events in noStrudel (Windows, Firefox). Haven't found or tested any Nostr clients for iOS that support NIP-53 events (I will admit I didn't look very hard...)
UI / UX
- OBS is the gold standard for desktop streaming and handles no auth with a simple checkbox, but all but one (sketchy) iOS app I tried required a stream key. I don't know how common streaming from mobile is (or whether the Android ecosystem is different), but I'd highly recommend adding stream key support.
- Much of the black-on-green text on the website is difficult to see. Inspector shows it as "cyan" and "green", but its displaying as black, and I couldn't find what was overriding it.
- The shimmer effect across the site runs over-top of the video window; not sure how big of a pain it would be to get it to run behind.
- Both the Data Vault and Recent Transmission section on the Live Feed page feel unwieldy to browse; auto-shrinking or capping the size of the video thumbnails would solve this.
- Some users may want archived / saved streams auto-posted to their Blossom server and/or as a simple link in a Kind-1 event, though given the file size of a longer stream Blossom may not be viable.
- The ability to export saved streams as single video files would be nice to have (admin only).
- Direct links for archived streams would be nice to have.
- The option to also post a Kind-1 event with a simple link to the stream would be nice to have. Would be awesome if the links used the stream thumbnail as their thumbnail (instead of the page/site preview) (I'm pretty sure there's some web magic that can achieve this, but it's been a while since I used it.)
- The play window for archived streams opening at the bottom of the Data Vault page is awkward; unsure if this is a bug or intentional.
- A super-simplified UI mode for the website that doubles as a template hosters can use to make their own custom UI? The webdevs among us could easily customize the current one, but having a simplified template would help encourage the up-and-coming webdevs to do so.

I tried the docker method this evening. The website is working but RTMP isn't. netstat inside the container says nothing is listening on 1935... I wasn't sure if your listing ffmpeg on the release page as a requirement meant we needed to install it separately, so I added it to the container, but still no working RTMP (though the logs say it is? 🤷‍♂️ (see below)). I'll take a fresh look tomorrow.

Most of what I’ve seen is complaints about loading speed and end-user bandwidth usage (if you’re outside of North America, look up our “bandwidth caps”, it’s terrible 😭). Especially bad if you’re on a cellular and have a cheap (read: low-cap) plan.
