Can't really agree with that. During a time when I was working with ANNs, I would get together with a neuroscience researcher every couple of weeks to compare notes over tea. She helped me understand that they are really a lot different than brains.
The brain HAS NNs but it isn't just an NN. It's something else that uses a bunch of NNs like tools. (And those NNs are very different. They don't even do backprop.) The similarity between brains and llms is very partial and pretty vague.
Also we are not just brains. There is no strong reason to think that we are and lots of reasons to conclude that we are not. We also have hands, which is pretty unique and fundamental, but you don't assume that a mechanical grasping device is in the same category as you or alive in some special way.
The proof against mystical ideas about "AI" is model collapse. It proves they are purely mechanical. No more alive than an abacus. And abicus does math. And engine drives a car. AI just does work we are not used to machines doing. So it seems magical. But its not.
I'm not above getting swept away by the illusion, but I had two advantage.
1. I figured this out building simpler networks like embedding models before LLMs even landed
2. I saw even ML researchers getting swept up in the illusion even back then and have had like eight or nine years to think about it. All of this is much older than we think. Just the size is new.
It is literally a database. If you learn the mechanics of how it works, it is not mysterious at all. It's useful. It's neat. I like machines. But it is literally just a database. A compressed stochastic one. It feels like magic for the same reason a horoscope or ouija board does. Or gambling. It's randomness hijacking our sense of what is alive.
Life is order increasing in a physically entropic world. That's genuinely mystical. AI models collapse because they are closed mechanical, stochastic systems. They are no more alive than a toaster oven, and never will be. And you are. You are alive, aware, seeing beauty, grasping transcendent things, reasoning, choosing good or evil.
AAI can operationalize what humans put into them. On their own, it's just recycling and slowly losing the order we load into them.
Accept no imitations. It's a magic trick.

This isn't quite right. The miners only matter because the small hodlers hold. The small hodlers matter the most. Not the "influencers" (gay word, btw) not the whales, not the miners, not the ETFs, not the institutions, not even the devs.
Everything else is downstream from people who hold small stacks on hard wallets and run nodes. As long as those people do their thing, the rest of the circus will organize itself around them. And it doesn't even matter if they know what they are doing (and mostly they don't) as long as they keep doing it.

Jack! Thank you thank you thank you. I'm excstatic that my ramblings are providing some value. I'm grateful for the chance to engage with the work you and Nick (and the rest of the circle that's forming) are doing.
I wasn't so much coming from a GR perspective as expecting that if the ledger model is true, it will explain the appearant conflict between QM and GR and the holes in both and just trying to mine that. It seems fruitful to say the least. I think my primary frames are just Thomistic metaphysics and some intuititions from neural networks that aught to apply to time as a transforming sequence of keyspace states. (I've done a bit of work with artificial neural networks.)
You've given me a lot to think about as usual and I'm heads down on a pretty deep bit of code so it may take me a couple of days to cogitate and give you a fullsome response, but I will!
I can say that I totally agree that a wave is just a description of successive states and not properly a thing. (Rieficarion casts a lot of shadows, in general.)
I think there is something.more I might be able to say about memory/information and order that I didn't grok when I was writing the essay. But the thoughts aren't fully formed. I need to let em cook.

What about God?
The lesson of entropy that Bitcoin teaches us about the physical time chain, that physics bears out when that lesson is applied, is precisely that man creates nothing. We only participate in creation as cosigners by our choices.
And, correct me if I am wrong, is this not also precisely what St. Thomas says about money, explicitly: that it does not reproduce?
One thing that actually just clicked for me in light of Jacks comment and what I learned while writing my little essay, is that another way to say what Jack is saying (I think, correct me) is that money IS the model memory, a form (in the Platonic sense, even) accruing order that the rational will cosignings. Either we choose higher goods, or we err and choose lesser goods.
We choose to participate in bring higher order that comes from source into being by coordinating our work or recycle the goods of the world under fiat (fictions of human value creation, dollars, ape jpegs, rent seeking, interest) under entropy.
The conclusion is not only that simple spam is pure entropy, but that non-monetary data with "financial" use cases that have these vaneers of being money-related are perhaps worse, because they are actually fiat, aka fictions of value creation.
Word magic is fraud. We don't create.

Ideally they would. Easy for me to say coming in and Monday morning quarterbacking, but it seems like this whole situation is wildly political for no reason. The conversation would ideally have been:
"Hey, we're behind on some maintenance. Let's drop some cruft, tighten some unnecessarily loose data limits that are feeding non-monetary use and kill the inscriptions hack."
Then we would have a calmly go through back testing against the chain to make sure we didn't chop any legit monetary use and roll the thing. It's not that hard.
And then I assume there would be hot cocoa with marshmallows. ☕
Obviously that ignores that there are incentives, financial interests, rivalries, reputations, egos and tribes. I'm not surprised this is hard for non-technical reasons. My point is just how purely non-technical problem actually is here.
The actual technical problem itself could have been solved by small number of people in a matter of weeks if they were working together well. Instead we have a total shitstorm.

I think that overstep was more than an overstep and they also neglected mainenance, like fixing the inscriptions hack. Without accusing anyone of anything, I can't help but notice that both the actions and inactions all pointed in the same direction of allowing shitcoinery on the network.
Bitcoin is money. Anything that can be done to tighten parameters to shut down non-monetary uses that crop up or sneak in a unintended consequences of other changes, without breaking existing monetary uses, should be done because that is responsible maintenance.
It narrows the state space, reduces the attack surface and supports keeping the network distributed by keeping the block light.
From a purely technical perspective (I've got no tribal dog here, and my local community if very core-centric, and I am friends with core devs) 110 really looks like a maintenance catch-up after some neglect.
Don't shoot but that's my honest read on the technical picture and somebody who has built and maintained software-based systems for a very long time.
Instead of fighting about this we could be focusing on making sure that 110 is a technically correct tightening of the bolts. No reason it should be anything else.
If there are specific, concrete issues, I am sure they can be fixed if brought to light.

If I can tie in an engineer's perspective on this: this is exactly why I do support 110. Telos is how you do rational software architecture and make rational maintenance decisions.
If the purpose of the protocol is money, then we can objectively decide what to do as software maintainers. If we are allowing space for non-monetary uses to slip through which can be closed without hurting monetary use, responsible software maintenance is tightening those constraints.
This simplifies the state space, reduces attack surface and supports decentralization by keeping the chain lighter.
I haven't found any arguments against 110 on valid technical grounds. It appears to be correct software maintenance. Rational node software maintenance is important to Bitcoin.
I also agree that spam will probably be priced out in the long run, so I'm not going to dramatize it, but that is not an excuse for us to willfully neglect proper maintenance.
Does that make sense?

I think a lot of lawyers go in with noble intentions, but I doubt even 1% keep that nobility. The system itself is so evil. I think the same is true for most high status professions to some extent, for the same reason. Imagine what you would have to play along with to get through medical school these day. Bitcoin is money. It closes down some ways people are or could abuse the network. Software is a game of providing ways to do things while keeping it as simple as possible. The least possible thing that achieves the intended result is best. To take Taproot as an example (what @nprofile…566r is saying here) it was intended to enable lightning without shoving the whole script into the transaction. That is getting hijacked to shove other data in. 110 closes that hole (the inscriptions hack) while preserving the intended use case. In general, ossification and simplicity are good at the base layer. That's what makes it good to build on. Least possible thing, least possible attack surface, least possible abuse, least possible change. Nobody wants to build on sand.
Tightening the bolts without breaking anything is exactly what responsible software maintenance looks like.
Also, I just like the idea that an intolerant minority can say "No, it's money, you are not hijacking Bitcoin to do other things. Don't touch my money." Developer capture has been a huge problem in open source software and core devs do not rule the network. Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner. Minority veto is good.
I've been coding since the 80s and building software professionally for >25 years and that's my take.

Spiritual is a loaded word for some, so I'm trying to stick to tracing the metaphysics at physics' observable boundary. We can observe (and experience) that the rational intellect grasps universals and abstracts. Zero, infinity, continuity (which is a form of infinity), triangularity, dimensionality...
Bitcoin giving us a model of time (state, conservation and change) that we can view from the outside, not only means that we can make a better model of the time we experience (physics) but also a better model of the interface (metaphysics). I seems to look just like what Aristotle and St. Thomas said.
The rational intellect grasps possible changes ("quantum states" which are not physical states but potentia) and qualities, practical reason discerns the good and the will signs potentia into actus.
The negative case is being proven to us by AI. Despite the complexity of computation, they still suffer model collapse. Without sustaining order from outside the system, they fall into entropy. Something sustains order from the outside and we participate in that because we bring order into being as well.

Agreed. But it's also worth pointing out that the privacy and security issue isn't really fixable. Mitigations with separate agents to interact with private data and untrusted data can help (what vira does, what I'm doing too) but they still have to talk to each other. From an information theoretic perspective you can't stop prompt injection and data exfil, you can only make it harder.

The intellect can grasp continuity but, physically, continuity can only be approximated. Because continuity is a concept. The fact that the intellect can grasp infinite and uncomputable things says something about the intellect, but it does not make infinite/continuous things physical.

The "Bitcoin: The Architecture of Time" paper is mind-blowing.
