Most developers on here don't seem to like simple things. Anytime you come up with something that is extremely elegant, reliable, and easy to implement and use, they come right back at you with something convoluted, messy, and garish, for no good reason.
Oh, that sounds great, girly, but those are rooky codes. We need to pump that code up. Let's add some doo-dads, transpose it to the third dimension, add a landing port for Superman, rewrite it in Rust...
They just get off on everything being complicated because that is more impressive to other developers. Why write 5 lines of code when you could write 104710 lines, KWIM?
Besides, if they just wrote the same 5 lines you did, then they would be _reusing your idea_ which is apparently the absolute horror. I mean,

I do like the idea of adding a bit more randomness to publishing events. Like having five randomly-selected relays from a curated/tested list added every time, as a client-option that the user can turn off.

I've been doing it algorithmically, with a three-tries-you're-out-for-this-session method. Which means that it's slowish for about 5 minutes and then speeds up, as it puts those relays in timeout.
I don't think I can remove that, as it also covers the common habit of having relays in your list that you can't actually write to, and cases where relays are down temporarily for maintenance.
Do you have a cronjob to update the liveliness events, or how does it work?

I don't mind working through the mess.
But parsing all of Wikipedia and Project Gutenberg did burn me out, a bit. 😂 That's not as much data, as I'm used to, but it's even less standardized because of all of the different editors.
I wouldn't have even tried, without AI. Still took weeks, since it has to be a continuous parser for incoming deltas. The Forever Parsing Project. 😂
It's more standardized, once it emerges on the other side, though, as events.

I've spent most of my "career" struggling to improve data quality, so I think I probably appreciate the simple standard of the event construct, more than most people.
Nostr events are really useful for all sorts of data sets in all sorts of environments. They aren't just a relay-thing or a social-thing. They're great for signing documents, parsing data, structuring data archives, machine2machine coms, etc.

I set up a trusted NIP-05 list on wss://thecitadel.nostr1.com. It was getting spammy. The repo view on #aitherboard is full of bot spam from thecitadel. Makes it useless.
I don't know if I did it properly, tho.

There are lots of OtherStuff use cases where speed is less important than persistence and reliability of the connection. Websockets are an artifact of starting off with Twitter clones. We've already spread out from there.
Since there are Nostr clients and relays using the other protocols, they already count as part of the Nostr protocol. As per the Nostr rules.

I hand-rolled a simple API that only reads from a website, so that you can download the e-books we're printing as epubs and mobi/AZW3. Had to strip the whole site down. No Javascript, websockets, nothing. Just HTML and HTTP.
There's no standard. @npub1fjq…leku and I have done some fiddling with Rest, for a while, is all. We are trying to get Nostr onto more different types of machines and deal with the sort of slow Internet that I regularly have to deal with, in my region. Websockets sometimes result in my seeing a blank page because they time-out over and over.

Building a software company to accomplish some particular project still makes sense to me, as you can use AI and get everything done as fast and cheaply, as possible.
But it's not an appropriate day job, anymore, that gets paid a salary. You have to be so ahead of the pack and young and innovative, in the AI age, or have some special/niche scope. I was doing bespoke software testing for business information systems and that is sort of DOA.
Not because the human work is going away, but because the customers are increasingly doing that part, themselves. All in-house development with AI support. Just need one or two engineers for your whole palette, where you used to need entire teams for each system.

Another reason open-source has become pointless is because AI-assisted coding has made every repo incredibly volatile. There's no feasible way to keep up with changes. Ain't nobody got time for that. It's more efficient to probe the application, at run-time, and watch for peculiar behavior; particularly anything odd on the network tab.
And every library is now a potential virus, with every update bringt potential doom. So, devs are hand-rolling more and more of their codebase, or only using code written by their buddies... the buddies whose private repos they can already see.

I'm souring on open source code, un-AUTHed relays, etc.
I'm opening myself and my servers up to the shady scraper mafia and malicious bot army and creepy Internet stalkers (alive or mechnical), but receiving no discernable benefit in return. The people who work on private code with me can see it and nobody else has ever bothered to even look.
And clients that can't AUTH are failed experiments and should simply be allowed to die. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Just checked, the Declaration of Independence is only 9kb.
The really big ones are probably things like dictionaries and encylopedias. My parser is breaking them up by letter, or something. I need to examine and tweak a bit.

The DB complained that some of the events were too big. Going to reparse into smaller max-size and reprint, and group them into smaller files.
500kb is probably a good max event size and maybe 20 MB for a file.

If you want to know why I built #aitherboard, it's not to make a daily-driver. That's what https://jumble.imwald.eu/ does quite well.
It's to make a *universal app* that you can use to read, edit, cache, share, and publish things that you have trouble finding and working with, on the other apps.
I'm designing it to work smoothly with _every kind_ and _every relay_ and _every markup_. Because I need that for testing other apps that I am building.
And I put a board on the landing page, so that you have a place to post something, that someone else might actually see. Nobody needs to follow you, to see what you post on that board. You just have to get onto a relay they use and write something.

I find it increasingly tiresome to see people claiming AI does all of the work to build websites. That only works with relatively simplistic, shallow websites, which usually end up vaporware because humans don't want to juggle 15 different widgets, just to accomplish what they want.
As soon as the architecture or data structure gets a bit complex, you have to roll up your sleeves and basically whip your AI, to get the rest built. Can take days, weeks, months. It's time-consuming, expensive, and exhausting. That's why we have a veritable plague of widget vaporware.
Yes, I know your AI can independently churn out 1047201740 different clients per day, like a software factory, but humans don't actually want that. Each new client presents a steep learning curve. People need AI to figure out how to use the software your AI built and they get tired of asking,

We at @npub1s3h…75wz have now imported half of Project Gutenberg to our #Orly 🦉 relay (actively developed and supported by @npub1fjq…leku).
You can see my branch on:

The second-half import will start tonight (it's a lot!). Then we start importing Wikipedia, in the various languages offered. We'll look for more data sources, after that. Will be millions of mid-sized events, once we're done. If you want to be an #Alexandria Library mirror, you might need to pimp your hardware, but you won't have to increase your event size-limits.
Our relay admin @npub10np…tl5h is going to host our first full mirror on wss://theforest.nostr1.com and you can then arrange streams, or whatever, with him. Our subscribers are making this good work possible! 🫶🏻
All of the items are in the public domain (no copyright) or are copyleft (we include a source tag and a clear notice that the source tag has to be maintained in a clone or fork). We will be regularly scanning the original sources for changes and updating the events. Once you have the basic set, you can just sync the updates. Also feel free to maintain a set of event forks, or to archive changes.
Our biggest challenge is now making the books easily discoverable, from any client that can render 30040 events, by juicing up relay searches with some high-tech engineering magic voodoo stuff. @npub1226…grkj and @npub1wqf…qsyn are both actively working on getting that going. ♥ Both of their systems are getting major updates. Expect cool stuff to get cool even harder.

Amazon is full of AI slop. People purchase it, by accident, and the people selling it have never even looked at the content. Sometimes, entire chapters are just blank or complete, random gibberish, or error messages.
They even make fake cipies of out-of-copyright books, that have totally different content to the original. Like Oliver Twist, but the chapters are AI hallucinations.
AI writes books nobody reads. But really, really fast. A flood of superfluous books...

I'm writing Go, now, as nothing else does that particular task as well, but I found it hard to get used to the syntax and the flat folder hierarchy.
The learning curve is real. Probably easier to start out on Go and then learn other languages afterward.

We all stopped using NIP-73 because it adds a layer of events and tags for no reason.
Even the bots did it more like we did, when they came up with their own system. They just skipped kind 11, entirely, and went with "i" tags, which suited their exact purpose, but isn't as performant or decentralized.
