My umbrel node has been broken for a YEAR, just because I wanted to upgrade hardware.
Previous setup was raspberry pi 4 + external SSD.
I wanted to upgrade to a pi 5 with an NVME.
SO I DID. And have been having major issues ever since. Apparently the NVME connector is shit for the (expensive) case I got and the issue was simply unstable I/O.
Finally had enough and upgraded to a lenovo thinkcentre mini.
Finally up and running again, everything is stable and I can once again rely on my own node for onchain and lightning transactions and that feeling is just epic.

If you develop an open source calculator and make "software changes" that carefully consider edge cases, sure.
When talking about the future of money, i think throwing that in under trivial "software changes" depicts your disrespect for the project you're influencing changes on.
Its simply too risky to implement changes, so we avoid it unless the benefits are extremely obvious and the risks have been studied deeply.

And I am by no means deeply into the weeds of the op_return issue.
I do however understand that we need to be EXTREMELY careful when making changes to a bitcoin implementation that is so widely used -- AND I also understand that supporting bitcoin core changes to help "extreme edge cases", given the above point of extreme care, just doesn't compute.
So, based on your own words in video above - I disagree with you, in that it lives up to your responsibility as whatever person in bitcoin you are (of higher than average importance) to support such a change.
Remember! My disagreement here is based 👏 on 👏 your 👏 own 👏 words 👏 PLUS the idea that changes to bitcoin core should be taken with EXTREME CARE.

I try this all the time, but in my area its incredible hard to convince a merchant to take bitcoin as payment. I just havn't been succesful doing this, but I do keep trying. So in this case, now what! I still need the goods! I must convert to fiat and pay the merchant what he requires for the goods I need.

Your problem is you sometimes get fixated on bitcoin as if its the end goal. Bitcoin is a tool, a means to an end. We need bitcoin to improve our lives. But if bitcoin cant buy my lumber today or my steak today, then I'll need to get creative.
The end goal is eating that steak and building a house where my family can be safe. Bitcoin today can help me do that by preserving my value across time. It is not yet ready to fully take the place of the fiat currency that is asked for when I buy those goods.
That's just reality.
If your approach is "then dont build" or "the dont eat", we just strictly disagree on that point. Difference between us is, i'm not out here trying to force an approach on you. You are, and I dont think thats helpful.

Make it so I can generate an invite link that is one-click setup with wallet and some auto-follows that I choose for the recipient. The reverse referral bonus means I can attach some amount of sats to the invite, so the recipient is ready to zap from the get go.
You could go even further and make it so we can generate such a link directly from a note on the feed. The logic here is - for people not already on nostr - their interaction with nostr could be a nostr user wanting to share a note with them in a chat on their favorite messaging app.
- I see a share-worthy note
- i want to share it with a friend
- i click the dots, generate a link and attach 210 sats.
Without this, my friend opens the note, sees the content and closes the browser again. Nostr interaction done.
With this, my friend can literally zap the note I wanted to share with 21 sat and have 9 more zaps for other notes they disover themselves of they decide to look a bit further. Thereby they get the full nostr experience in a situation that would normally not take advantage of their one-time visit to nostr-land and its financed by users not by the "platform", as referral bonuses usually are.

Because today it has become more obvious that keeping the protocol strictly focused on being money only, "specific speech platform", is imperative for its success. Apparently, this wasn't as obvious enough at the time of the genesis block to make satoshi refrain from taking that liberty.
However, the genesis block example is not comparable to the "jpegs on the blockchain" example, as that is orders of magnitude more hurtful than the famous gensis block inscription.
Today though, if you asked me whether I'd rather that satoshi had never done that inscription - so it wouldnt be used as precedent today - or i'd rather accept future transactions bloat the blockchain with arbitrary data, sure I'd wish he hadnt taken that liberty.

The "lost the plot" part was directed at the note I replied to. Obviously all nodes being full nodes is not bad for decentralization.
I think/hope your rationale is -- if all nodes HAVE to be full nodes --> there would be fewer full nodes --> which would be bad for decentralisation.
But your phrasing is easily misinterpreted to something that sounds like people should prefer to run pruned nodes. Thats the way I read it the first time.
My point with respecting the signal from a substantial amount of noderunners is, since the problem the proposed change seeks to fix and the response is as controversial as it is, no change should be implemented. A better fix should be given time to be thought of.

We're choosing code, not maintainers. Obviously. If that wasn't the case, NO ONE, other than a few retodds would run core.
What boggles my mind mostly with this op_return change is that the core devs think the right move is to go ahead with it when there is clearly a divided opinion about it.
Since it doesnt DEFINITELY save bitcoin it should NOT be implemented if it is the cause of a large scale debate like this. No change is better than controversial change. OR at least compromises should be made, like what happend during the blocksize wars.
This luke quote is ABSOLUTELY THE LEAST IMPORTANT ARGUMENT IN THIS DEBATE.

If avoiding judgement is more important to you than your kids emotions, then the fault is on you to begin with. There are several valid ways to deal with this type of situation in public, but probably all of them include severe judgement from people. And in front of my kids well-being and their emotions, people can go fuck themselves. I'll use that stage to teach my kid all the valuable lessons available in that situation while also acknowledging that *I* am the reason they're in an uncomfortable situation at a time where they didn't have the mental capacity to be in that situation.

Yes, its an impossible battle. Even with all I've done, even relatives take pictures of my kids with snapchat. But I refrain from going nuts and accept reality. I will, however, take the steps that are within my realm of control.
In the end, as a low threat model individual, my approach to privacy is, I wont be invisible, but I can at least not be easy to find.

Its two fold. One is just being monetized less. Taking back some data sovereignty. It feels good. Biggest impact was family photos. Knowing they never touched a big tech cloud just makes me more comfortable.
Second thing is, I just can't know what I could be targeted for in the future. Having learned good opsec now just makes my chances that much better should I ever actually NEED that skill. I take pretty extreme measures today for a low threat model individual, but should I need it in the future, I'd be able to go pretty much offline without having to learn it all at that point in time.
Its the same with bitcoin. Dont wait with learning how to handle a coldcard until A) the bullrun is at its highest and now u need to scramble to secure some sats or B) now u need to move in an emergency and need to learn how to bring ur stuff with you in a hurry. Those are the worst times to learn new skills.

Agree. I've been unsure whether the isolated android profile with google services and logged into google "destroyed" the privacy for the other android profiles. Sounds like u think this is fine?
I guess one could avoid logging into google and using Aurora but with google services installed might work thus avoiding the log in?
I have an aurora profile for google apps that work without google services and a full on google profile where I just gave up.
Obviously all this is on a graphene pixel phone.
