It was more of a republican than it is now because Senate was elected by state legislatures not by the people directly
The moves away from all that have given us more democracy but also crazy dictator types like Trump
Having some stake in society makes sense to me as a requirement to vote. Maybe a small thing like being able to read or owning land, or something - a car - something
