One reason Bitcoin hasn’t risen to higher levels above $200K, as many people (myself included) expected, is that nation-state demand has been weaker than anticipated.
Countries still don’t view Bitcoin as an essential reserve asset, and there doesn’t appear to be a strong sense of urgency among governments to acquire it. Instead, central banks and nation-states have been aggressively accumulating gold, not Bitcoin.
That could change.

In the event of a credit collapse, I feel confident about Bitcoin. While Bitcoin’s price could fall as leverage gets wiped out, the inevitable outcome of a true credit crisis is bank failures. Banks are some of the most over-leveraged institutions in the financial system.
When banks fail, Bitcoin demand tends to rise because people look for an alternative way to store their wealth. Whether Bitcoin falls 50% or rises 50% in dollar terms, holding it in cold storage keeps your Bitcoin safe. Can’t say the same for your dollars sitting in the bank (because they are not there).

Gold and silver are seeing a sharp pullback today. Gold is down roughly 10% (slide 2), while silver is down a whopping 26% (slide 3)! A few key catalysts appear to be driving today’s selloff.
First, gold and silver were simply due for a pullback. Prices for both precious metals have risen aggressively over recent weeks, and it’s natural for investors to take profits after such a strong move higher. Some level of consolidation was expected.
Another major factor is today’s news that Kevin Warsh is set to become the new Fed Chair. Warsh is widely viewed as a more hawkish candidate, which makes this decision somewhat surprising. Trump has publicly pushed for looser monetary policy, but Warsh may be less inclined to cut rates or pursue quantitative easing (money printing). Gold and silver may have been pricing in looser monetary policy and dollar weakness—conditions that typically benefit precious metals—so this shift in expectations could be pressuring prices.
We also saw the December PPI inflation report come in hotter than expected. PPI rose 3.0%, versus expectations of 2.7%. This increases the likelihood of fewer rate cuts, which tends to support the U.S. dollar and weigh on gold and silver in the short term.
That said, I’m somewhat surprised by how negatively gold and silver are reacting to these developments. Tighter monetary policy typically hurts risk assets and, in theory, should increase demand for safe-haven assets like gold and silver. It makes me wonder whether investors were simply waiting for a catalyst or headline to lock in profits.

The U.S. dollar continues its downward move today, with the DXY down nearly 1% and sitting at 96.14.
At the same time, gold and silver continue to rally, raising an important question: which countries are buying up gold and silver, and who’s selling dollars?
I’m not a big fan of the DXY since it measures the dollar against other fiat currencies (they all suck), but the move still makes you wonder whether we’re seeing a coordinated shift away from the U.S. dollar right now.
If nation-states are making up a large portion of the buying in precious metals, do they even have an incentive to sell? And if they did sell, what asset would they sell into? Government debt isn’t looking too attractive.

President Trump has proposed the idea of a 50-year mortgage…
Why? In an effort to make buying a home more affordable.
Here’s the idea: Spread the loan out over a longer period of time, reducing the monthly payments. With lower monthly payments more people may be able to afford taking out a mortgage.
Is it a good idea?
For the borrower, I would say yes. Lower monthly payments allow more people to afford a mortgage. The total dollar amount of the loan is more, however as we know the dollar is losing value over time. By the time the borrower pays off the loan (if they’re alive) that total dollar amount will be worth significantly less.
For the lender, I would hate this! 50 years is a long time and with that time there is a lot of risk. The main risk for the lender is the dollar losing its value. If a lender lends money for 50 years at a fixed interest rate (ex: current 30-year mortgage rate is between 6-7%) and the inflation rate goes higher (ex: 12%) then the lender is losing value.
Based on the dollars past performance I would say there is a high probability of inflation rising higher than current mortgage rates. There’s also a high probability that the dollar isn’t even around in 30-50 years. For this reason I find it hard to believe that lenders are going to be comfortable with this idea, especially as the dollar continues to weaken.
