Last Notes npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec @nprofile…vuvh This is so awesome, both the huge impact you're making for the people in the community, and the fact that others in the group are stepping in to take responsibility without you. So many wins! I hope the relationship/financial stuff is sorted soon and you can get some space back for yourself too <3 npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec @nprofile…hl3m I've always preferred nerd over geek, and I'm not sure why! I wonder if it's just that nerd is a softer word? I don't really think there's much difference in connotation... And I don't hate geek! But also it seems like they used to be used interchangeably and now nerd is more common? I'm not sure... npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec @nprofile…s67t Yes please, gosh daylight savings kicks my butt (I live in place where we don't have it, but almost all my colleagues do have it, so we spend 6 months ever so slightly out of sync) npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec Hey, I should be writing but lookie here! Remember how the ladybirds have been having sex all over the tree in the garden? I've been looking out for eggs for weeks and today I spotted them! Yaaay can't wait for all the baby ladybirds 🥰 https://mediacdn.aus.social/media_attachments/files/115/021/703/211/748/565/original/6216fb7a57c41a5c.jpg npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec Interesting... But potatoes! My most enduring love, potatoes! https://www.lunduniversity.lu.se/article/cutting-out-sugar-and-starch-effective-ibs-current-recommendations#:~:text=Symptoms%20for%20patients%20with%20the,diet%20currently%20recommended%20to%20patients. npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec Perthlings, I want to send flowers to a friend. What's your delivery florist of choice? Needs to not be gut-wrenchingly expensive please (ie < $50) #perth #HelpMeOut #flowers npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec The sun is out and so are all the bugs! Ladybirds feeling romantic and bees doing their thing plus a black ladybird... could be a Harlequin? Not sure, and even if it is, I don't know whether it's a friend or not (in plague proportions they're apparently bad but aren't we all?) Not pictured: some aphids (unsurprisingly), and two different kinds of flies. Anyway, the bugs – invasive or not – are loving the tree and the birds are loving the bugs and it's such a thrill to watch #gardening #insects #ladybirds https://mediacdn.aus.social/media_attachments/files/114/918/086/976/203/922/original/61631e4e95f3aa5d.jpg https://mediacdn.aus.social/media_attachments/files/114/918/088/049/259/393/original/4207ca1853c83301.jpg npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec #ThreeGoodThings for Sunday, 8th June - took Kid3 and Kid4 to the pool, where I did walking/swimming laps and they hung out and swam and chatted to other kids who were there - made a huge lasagne and a stew, which means easy school lunches for the next couple of days and also gave some soup away to one of Kid2's friends (omg it's so great to have food to give away, it's truly one of my fave things ever) - it was sunny so I got to hang out washing #3GoodThingsToday #food #swimming #sunday npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec FRIENDS! I PASSED MY PHD!! Not only that, but the examiners both liked the story and the exegesis, and some of their comments.... they're so positive and they both think this is a worthwhile and important contribution to scholarship and steampunk and I am both giddy and weepy. Now to do the changes and edits and then I'm ready to graduate! Woohoo! #phd #university #writing npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec #ThreeGoodThings - finally the weekend. It's been a long week - chatting with a friend and former work colleague, and then a wonderful email from another friend and colleague; feeling very blessed and content to know such kind folk who seem to know just the right time to get in touch - listening to 90s songs in the kitchen while making pasta bake for an easy-peasy quick and easy tea #food #3GoodThings #ThingsILove #friends #weekend npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec I was chatting to one of Kid3's friends in the kitchen the other week, and he was saying that he helped his mum in the garden now and then. 'I find it kind of boring,' he admitted. And while I was weeding today, I was thinking how there is a bunch of things like that in your childhood, isn't there? But it's still good to have those experiences, even the boring ones, the chores. I didn't really love gardening as a child either, or makig food, or practising piano – I would have rather been reading or playing with my pets or hanging out with friends. And now cooking, gardening, playing music... they're skills I have and ones I've grown better at myself through practice, and more importantly, I love doing them. When I spoke to the friend, I reassured him that he might come to enjoy the gardening later and he smiled (because he is 14 and later is forever away, isn't it?) #parenting #conversations #gardening npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec Recently: - my supervisor is hoping that he’ll have examiners confirmed to mark my PhD soon, which means I’ll be able to submit (yay) - Kid1 finally got around to enrolling to vote and that means he’ll be able to vote in our state election in less than a month! I’m possibly more excited than he is about this - some uncomfortably warm nights recently but today is beautifully cool and breezy, I just love it - due to the favourable conditions, I intend to plant the heirloom rainbow chard this afternoon - yesterday I cooked a small roast for school lunches and this morning, Kid4 left it on the counter after making his sandwich, and went back into his room. In the short time he was away, a cat jumped on the counter, knocked the roast onto the floor, and one of the dogs ate the entire thing, wolfing it down in under a minute. Heavy sigh - my ear is hurting in a ‘you are brewing an infection’ way and I would actually rather not, thanks - my gut is also hurting quite a lot, to the point that I might have to ask for the dark magic pills again (steroids – I love that they work but also: side effects) - one of my work besties is leaving tomorrow and I’m sad but also she has not yet been replaced so it’s going to make my workload ridiculous, which makes me a bit resentful (of my company! not of my soon-to-be-ex-work bestie, because she’s awesome) - potentially, these last three dot points may be related… #health #update #food #work #phd #gardening #elections #parenting npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec @nprofile…v6dl Thanks! Yeah, we would have preferred to replace just the washer or even the seat but it wouldn't come apart. For garden taps they seem to sell the whole things and that's what you replace? Does seem like a waste of resources though (and is more expensive). But on the upside, it was a super easy swap! npub12a0cs79n4nzdlrvkg0nzzu42dz39m0c2333knx8wy5s54czxj76sqwxm80 Bec Joined Mastodon in '21 and started properly posting in '23 (maybe '22, but I can't remember for sure and I can't be bothered going through all the posts to check). Have had one dubious DM but even that one was fine and didn't get too weird. Joined Blusky in November this year. Barely a month and I get my first weird DM. Plus the bots. Omg, the bots. I don't think everything has to be reduced to a better/worse good/bad binary and there are some people I know from the other place who never took up Mastodon, so it's great to be in touch with them again. But let's just say in wanting to make a clone of the other place, Blusky also cloned all the undesirable things as well. It's a shame, but I suspect it's for that very reason that it's proving popular with people. Of course, everyone's experience will be different and I think that the volume of diverse voices on Blusky is something that goes in its favour. But it's been super interesting to reflect on how I respond emotionally to being on each platform. I definitely feel more at home here. #Blusky #SocialMedia #FindingYourPeople
