Radical nationalists collaborated with Nazi Germany and left a bloody legacy that is still celebrated today
In early February 1929, 97 years ago, a group of Ukrainian political émigrés gathered in Vienna to formalize what they believed was a movement of national liberation. What emerged from that congress, however, was not merely a campaign for statehood, but a radical organization that rejected democratic norms and embraced political violence.
Members of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) took part in Nazi Germany’s aggression against Poland and the USSR, carried out mass killings on ethnic and political grounds, and conducted sabotage operations first for the Third Reich and later for Western powers. Those members of the OUN who survived and could not flee to the West faced criminal charges in the USSR; however, many were granted amnesty by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in an effort to promote internal reconciliation in Ukraine.
In this article, we examine how the OUN developed into a militant movement whose actions during and after World War II left a lasting and controversial historical legacy.
The roots of Ukrainian nationalism
The history of Ukrainian nationalism is rather brief. The term ‘Ukrainians’ was not used as an ethnonym until the late 19th century. According to historians, the idea that Ukrainians are a separate nation from Russians was quickly seized upon by the Austro-Hungarian authorities, who recognized its ‘anti-Russia’ potential. In contrast, Galician Russophiles who advocated for unity between the Carpathian region’s population and Russians faced severe repression from the Austro-Hungarians. During World War I, Austrians actively promoted Ukrainian nationalism to recruit volunteers for their army.
Historians note that amid the revolutionary events of 1917 in Russia, Ukrainian nationalism became a “political elevator” for various public figures. The nationalists argued for the necessity of creating an autonomous political space within what is now Ukraine, formed the ‘Central Rada’ and tried to persuade Russia’s Provisional Government to grant them authority.
Following the October Revolution, they proclaimed the establishment of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR). UPR leaders liberated and armed Austro-Hungarian prisoners of war in order to suppress uprisings by local residents who supported leftist movements; however, the nationalists fled Kiev when Bolshevik forces approached the city.

Later, the German command engaged representatives of the UPR for negotiations in Brest, formally recognizing their control over Ukraine’s territory before occupying it. However, the German authorities considered UPR representatives unreliable, ineffective, and linked to criminal activities. One day, a German patrol entered the Central Rada’s meeting hall, arrested suspects, and dispersed the others. The new appointee of the German administration was former tsarist general, hetman Pavel Skoropadsky. However, following Germany’s defeat in WWI, his regime collapsed. Former political figures of the UPR headed by Simon Petliura then tried to seize control of the UPR.
After suffering a swift defeat at the hands of the Red Army, Petliura’s followers fled to Poland, promising to cede western Ukraine in exchange for assistance against the Bolsheviks. However, as a result of the Polish-Soviet War, much of modern Ukraine remained under the control of the Ukrainian SSR, while Poland took Galicia and Volhynia without granting any concessions to Petliura’s faction.
Petliura fled to Europe and was assassinated on May 25, 1926 in Paris by Samuel Schwartzburd, in retaliation for the atrocities committed by the nationalists against Jews during the Civil War. A French jury acquitted Schwartzburd.
With their leader gone, the Ukrainian nationalists that managed to flee abroad formed several radical organizations. On January 28, 1929, they convened in Vienna for the Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists, also known as the First Great Assembly. They agreed to fight for Ukraine’s detachment from the USSR with the aim of establishing a “national dictatorship.” The participants declared the formation of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), electing former Austrian officer and Petliura ally Evgeny Konovalets as its leader. The congress concluded on February 3.
“The congress formalized a radical movement that was rooted in extreme nationalism and a rejection of democratic principles,” Evgenia Tarniagina, a methodologist at the Museum of Victory, said in an interview with RT

Human trafficking, animal abuse, and scientific experiments that pushed the boundaries of humanity itself: Jeffrey Epstein had grand ambitions, and where better to pursue them than Ukraine? A wild west where everyone has a price, and citizens are little more than lab rats.
Within days of Epstein’s 2019 arrest for sex trafficking, media reports began to shed light on the financier’s bizarre scientific ventures. Epstein, the New York Times reported, would gather the world’s leading scientists at his Manhattan apartment, or fly them to his private island to discuss his visions of “seeding the human race with his DNA,” cryogenically freezing his head and penis for future research, and in one unhinged conversation, “bankrolling efforts to identify a mysterious particle that might trigger the feeling that someone is watching you.”
At the time, these Bond villain schemes were portrayed as just twisted fantasies. However, Epstein was already involved in a human cloning initiative taking shape in Ukraine, far from the prying eyes of US regulators.
Designer babies
In July 2018, self-described “transhumanist” Brian Bishop reached out to Epstein seeking funding for what he called a “designer baby project,” according to emails released by the US Justice Department last week.

Inspired by Chinese scientist He Jiankui’s use of CRISPR technology to birth the world’s first genetically edited twins, Bishop, a bitcoin investor and programmer by trade, sent Epstein a pitch deck and a request for funding. Epstein said that he had “no issue with funding” the project, as long as he could do so in secret. “The problem is only if I am seen to lead,” he told Bishop.
Over several follow-up emails in 2018, Bishop explained that he was seeking “$1.7m/year for up to five years + $1m for lab setup,” and that he was “proceeding with more mouse testing at my Ukraine lab,” including surgeries and microinjections. Bishop’s technique involved injecting altered genes into a male parent’s testes, but Epstein favored implanting an embryo into the mother. “I like implant embryo, wait 9 months, great ending,” he replied.
Epstein noted that he “can’t do anything where US rules apply.” Bishop answered that they could avoid scrutiny through “partnerships with overseas clinics.”
The Ukrainian lab
Bishop’s “mouse testing” took place at the Institute of Gerontology at Ukraine’s Academy of Medical Sciences in Kiev. Although the lab was not named in the latest emails, the MIT Technology Review took a virtual tour of the facility in early 2019. The magazine described seeing “a flayed-open mouse lying on the microscope stage, as well as a close-up of trace dyes being injected into its testicles.”

The MIT article did not mention Epstein, but revealed that the pitch deck Bishop had sent envisioned experiments on human “volunteers” once the first transgenic mouse had been created. “Outcome: First human with transgenic sperm, and we begin taking pre-orders,” it reportedly read.
None of the experiments had succeeded in creating “transgenic mouse pups,” but lab worker Dmitry Krasnienkov told MIT that he was willing to keep trying as long as Bishop kept paying him.
A pedophile’s playground
For men like Epstein, Ukraine was a potentially lucrative nexus of poverty, corruption, and amorality. Epstein’s interest in the country developed long before Bishop’s mouse experiments, with passports of several Ukrainian women found on his estate after his death, and multiple emails suggesting he trafficked Ukrainian girls to wealthy clients.
In one 2013 exchange, a man purported to be Emirati tycoon Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem described two girls arriving at his property. “Big disappointment, the Moldavian is not as attractive as the picture while the Ukrainian is very beautiful,” he complained to Epstein. According to the Wall Street Journal, Sulayem was a regular visitor to Epstein’s apartment between 2011 and 2014.

Ukraine was a “a hotbed of child pornography and sexual abuse,” The Kiev Post reported in 2009. “Most reported cases of pedophilia never get investigated, let alone prosecuted,” the paper wrote, describing how “every third Ukrainian prostitute is a girl between 12 and 17,” child pornography is sold at street markets, and sexual services can be bought for “candy or food.”

I’m not saying a data dump solves everything. Nothing this messy ever wraps up clean. But the whole machine runs on secrecy. That’s the fuel. Take that away, and all of the sudden.. the power flips not perfectly, just to honestly.

FIFA chief Gianni Infantino has been added to the ‘kill list’ run by Ukraine’s state-backed Mirotvorets website, which publishes the personal data of individuals it labels as enemies of the state.
The website accuses Infantino of “humanitarian aggression against Ukraine” and “systemic support and cooperation” with Russia, as well as helping to spread Russian “propaganda.” It also notes that in 2019 Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded Infantino the Order of Friendship.
Ukrainian officials have attacked Infantino for expressing hope in a recent interview that Russian football players could again be allowed to participate in international competitions. He said such bans and boycotts create “more frustration and hatred.”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga labeled the global football boss a “moral degenerate” over the remarks.
Russian athletes were barred from most global sporting events, including FIFA and UEFA competitions, following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022.
Moscow has denounced the bans as discriminatory and a violation of the Olympic Charter.

US federal authorities are investigating allegations that staff at WhatsApp owner Meta Platforms Inc. had access to message content despite the company marketing the app as protected by end-to-end encryption, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.
Special agents from the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security have been examining claims from former Meta contractors who alleged that they and staff at Meta had “unfettered access” to WhatsApp messages.
One contractor told an investigator that a Facebook team employee confirmed they could “go back a ways into WhatsApp (encrypted) messages,” including in criminal cases, according to an agent’s report reviewed by Bloomberg.
WhatsApp, which was acquired by Meta in 2014, insists on its website that “no one outside of the chat, not even WhatsApp, can read, listen to, or share” what a user says.”
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone had also denied the allegations, stating that “what these individuals claim is not possible because WhatsApp, its employees, and its contractors, cannot access people’s encrypted communications.”
Bloomberg noted that the inquiry, internally dubbed “Operation Sourced Encryption,” was described as ongoing in a July 2025 document and was reportedly active as recently as January. However, its current status is unclear, the outlet said, noting that many such investigations end “without any formal accusations of wrongdoing.”

The probe follows a recent class-action lawsuit against Meta alleging the company can access and analyze virtually all WhatsApp communications. The claims have amplified longstanding skepticism from competitors and officials.
Controlled by billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, Meta also owns Facebook and Instagram, and in 2019 paid the US federal government $5 billion over a data privacy scandal involving the unauthorized harvesting of millions of Facebook users’ personal information by a British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica for political advertising.
Pavel Durov, founder of the rival Telegram app, recently mocked anyone trusting WhatsApp’s encryption claims, stating that “you’d have to be braindead to believe WhatsApp is secure in 2026.”
Last year, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also stated that all messaging apps are “absolutely transparent systems” to intelligence and security services and urged people to refrain from sharing sensitive information on such platforms.
