i realize this is very niche but for the past 7-8 months i've been reading 19th century Russian novels and there are A LOT of similarities between that culture and the modern culture of the west.
idk if you know how that turned out for the Russians, but suffice it to say, it was not good for a long long time.

What I’ve always found interesting about this discussion is that the blame is almost always placed on “weight cutting” itself, but rarely on the fighter for choosing to compete in the wrong weight class.

for sure! i don't think many people know about it, unless you've been in that position (choosing whether to water cut or not)
there is a safe amount you can water cut, but its best done under the supervision of a trained pro.

going off of BMI doesn't really make sense to me. you introduce another variable (height) and then, what? we have "BMI" divisions?
what about tall, naturally skinny people? this kid is 6'3 and fights at 145, my understanding is that he cuts naturally (increased training volume).
should he not be able to compete cause his BMI is too low?

yeah but putting water weight back on doesn't necessarily give you an advantage in a strict sense. the more you (water) cut down, the more water you pull away from your brain.
brain matter does not rehydrate in 24hr. so, water cutting too much compromises the fighter who CUTS. it makes the "cutter" more susceptible to KOs where they would not have been as susceptible, but for water cutting.
so, it's a risk that the cutting fighter takes. also, you definitely feel much less sharp and much less strong after water cutting (even after rehydrating).

you can cut weight in different ways. i used to cut ~15 - 20lbs before fights. I didn't water cut, so it took me a while to get down (8ish weeks).
point is: organizations have tried different ways to curtail it, but it's hard to do. ONE championship tried to do hydration tests with weigh-ins -- the idea there is to avoid gnarly water cuts (probably what Smotherman did). There are issues with hydration tests too, though.

i don't think cutting weight will ever leave combat sports. it's just part of it.
you do whatever you can to gain advantage over your opponent -- stakes are high (you could get KO'd in front of everyone you love).
sometimes it gets taken to far, but such is life.

Liquid has confidential txs, so LN + Liquid could “wash” a UTXO
It is not perfect, but it works for folks who don’t want to run nodes, or whirlpool etc
