it only had 1GB of RAM so using a web browser was only semi-practical but otherwise it worked okay

you're telling me 3 normal USB ports is the best you can do in the year of our lady 2025? mine's 2 USB, 2 USB-C, ethernet, HDMI, a headphone jack, and a sick joke of an SD card reader and it's a significant downgrade I/O wise compared to what it replaced
the old one had two video outputs, 5 normal USB ports, ethernet that didn't need a dongle, separate headphone and mic jacks, a usable SD card slot, and probably other stuff I'm forgetting
the bigger version added two expresscard slots and a firewire port, the bigger version of my current laptop adds ... nothing, you just get a regular ethernet jack rather than the annoying docking connector one

I feel like there's room for a concept like the overton window but it's technology features
we just accept that our laptops have no ports and our phones lose features without meaningfully improving now, due to the incessant push of marketing and apologists for these giant billion-dollar companies
the window has slid away from the consumer. you aren't allowed to want a laptop with real expandability or more than two USB ports now. you can get phones with headphone jacks but they're niche and unusual.
I dunno I just wanted to bitch

I saw a tip for cleaning one's oven the other day on fedi - to bake a container of water to loosen the gunk. Figured I'd try it today after making my lunch.
Came out after 20 minutes to find black ooze coming out of my oven.
Moral of the story, if it's been a while since you cleaned your oven, put down something to catch the drips.

I feel that this is kind of a deeper issue with computing as a whole.
As time goes on it gets harder to actually do anything with your devices without buying extra hardware.
Sure, desktops and laptops never had GPIOs, but they had plenty of other I/O that one could use, be it USB or video outputs or network interfaces.
Now there's less ports that do less things - you don't get ethernet on most laptops, and you can't use the two USB-C ports they do have for networking without actually hooking up an ethernet cable in the middle with a pair of adaptors.
And each port you use is one you can't use for something else.
But that's getting off track because ultimately the problem is the philosophy of their intended use; you're not supposed to use your computing devices to DO things, to MAKE things, you're meant to use them to CONSUME things. This is why they keep getting more user-hostile in their interfaces, because the intended usecase is that of a hyper-targeted TV, occasionally showing you what you want without interaction, but primarily there to deliver ads and propaganda.

@nprofile…csx6 yeah but you can't reasonably package Some Node Software because it has approximately three trillion dependencies and nobody's maintaining that shit
tangentially, does it actually support loading libraries from somewhere like /usr/lib or /usr/share? I've never bothered to look.
I imagine if you did you'd then have trouble packaging other stuff because there are version pinning issues

something I think nodejs software developers don't undestand is that using and running node-based software as an admin is miserable; it's basically impossible to package for a distro sanely, the actual software ends up taking up huge amounts of disk space, the dependency kudzu situation makes it really difficult to trust anything...
basically unless it's the only option I will avoid it. at least go software tends to result in easily usable binaries.
