Kind of chewing on this, and there is an alternative explanation.
Right now, there is very little incentive to explain oneself. Think about the case of a woke moral purge.
Does the mob stop pressing when they get an apology? Would Luke and Matt Kratter and the mob behind them actually back down, if they got a clear explanation or apology from Back and Jeremy Ruben or Bryan Bishop? Would the tech press suddenly stop ragging on bitcoin as GoyGold?

1. Epstein's sentence was a joke. Even when he was imprisoned, his cell was often left unlocked. He was back on the streets on work release after 3.5 months of an 18 month sentence. Pretty clear that everything was arranged to be treated like NBD.
2. Epstein was a billionaire and a known benefactor of many initiatives. His status among the elite barely suffered, and among those who overlapped his interests and sought funding, he was known to be generous.
3. Money + Systemic legal system failures = major incentive to not ask a lot of questions. It's not notable that Epstein continued to network extensively. It would actually be notable if ANYONE stood up and said "Hey isn't this guy the one who got pinched for child prostitution?"
Do I need to cite Milgram to explain how this works psychologically?

Rubin was corresponding as late as 2017 in an incredibly familiar way, which makes semse, since Epstein funded DCI+MIT Media Lab. The emails I read are super dry, like a status report to someone Rubin feels professionally beholden to.
Epstein had 9 years distance from his 2008 conviction at that point, but people don't really appreciate what a nothing burger it was treated like. His sentence was super lenient, and even when he was imprisoned, his cell was left unlocked. Nobody seemed to gave a shit, and it's easy to see how, if Epstein is your benefactor, and everyone seems to be pretty cool acting like the that child prostitution thing was all blown out of proportion, then why not continue the beneficial relationship? This appears like a collective lapse of judgement (a really weird, major one) than a specific one of Rubin's part.

1. It is perhaps an ill-informed opinion, as I did NOT know Back was likely on the island; only how the $500k (of $18m) in the seed round was procured through MIT Media Lab and later divested. Nostr continues to be a terrible source of relevant information. I had a public note this morning, asking for people's most BRUTAL takes on Epstein+bitcoin, and I only got Bryan Bishop asking for funding to experiment on literal mice for his designer baby startup.

To be fair, Epstein's nefarious dealings were barely on anyone's radar in 2014. His extremely lenient sentencing in 2009 and his sprawling active social network indicate that, if anyone was seeking funding from him, it very likely wasn't with the full awareness (such as we have today, in retrospect) of what sort of awful shit he was up to.
Bryan Bishop seeking g funding from ANYONE for designer babies should reflect poorly on himself, and I don't see why that implicates the other core and core-adjacent people mentioned in the emails.
