My friend built a strategy called Military Incremental Complex, which just launched on Steam today. You can build up your army by making bullets by hand, then with machines, and then upgrading to entire factories. It's pretty fun and there's a ton of content in it.

I went to a local "Open Source" happy hour this evening.
There was panel on how "AI is impacting enterprises" and they mostly focused on the dangers of how AI might take everyone's job. Lots of discussion about enterprises, board members asking about "AI Strategy", and how to impose guardrails for safe AI use.
Umm what exactly does that have to do with Open Source Software?
I don't think any of the panelists mentioned the words "open source" once.
Frankly not surprising, but still eye opening to see the disconnect that the Bitcoin ecosystem has from the broader tech community.
Open source is more than just dumping code on the internet.

Been a long time (~10 years) since I've looked at any graph database, and I've never used Neo4j (I remember fighting with Giraph though, had a hell of a time getting that to compile).
I like this paper's assessment of graph databases: https://db.cs.cmu.edu/papers/2024/whatgoesaround-sigmodrec2024.pdf
TLDR is graph databases do have some performance optimizations over RDBMS due to the storage layout and optimized algorithms for common queries (shortest, ancestors, etc), but ultimately you can also represent a graph as a collection of tables. Recently some RDBMS systems have been adding graph-like query languages and have been optimizing joins for graph queries and they have been claiming better performance.
If you're not doing large OLAP queries or using it for other purposes, Neo4j seems like a pretty good fit for a Nostr relay.

I'm curious what Nostr thinks of privacy vs auditability in ecash mints.
In Fedimint, all of the Bitcoin is held in an onchain multisig that is controlled by the guardians. In most deployments, this is a 3/4 (but it can be larger), which makes it painfully obvious onchain to third party observers. The UTXOs that a federation controls is also not private, they can be found by scanning the mint's history (which is public). This can be seen on https://observer.fedimint.org/ or using Ecash App (https://ecash.love). I think it is a nice feature to be able to see onchain all of the UTXOs that a federation holds (this could make something like proof of reserves easier).
Now, in a world where Fedimint has a taproot wallet (instead of P2WSH) and can use FROST/ROAST to sign peg-out transactions, it is no longer obvious onchain to third party observers which UTXOs correspond to a federation, since they can be spent using the keypath which looks like a normal taproot single-sig spend. However, as mentioned above, the UTXOs for the federation are still public, so a "fedimint-aware" third party adversary could still scan the mint's history and figure out the UTXOs.
I suppose we could come up with a scheme to keep peg-in UTXOs private from third party adversaries, which (with FROST) would have the benefit that it would be really hard to use onchain data and mint history to determine if a user is using a Fedimint. But this would come at the cost of easy auditability.

Curious what Nostr thinks about this idea:
A Fedimint module to be a "maker" on JoinMarket. A federation could earn fees (or the forbidden word "yield") on the backing reserves of the Fedimint. Currently the federation's funds do not move unless there is a pegin or a pegout, and the idea would be to put this capital to use in a non-custodial way. Could provide an incentive for running a Fedimint.

Not necessary for guardians to run one. Similar to nostr, if a relay starts censoring traffic, someone else (could be a guardian) can spin one up and use that instead of the default

On the Fedimint dev call today, we setup a demo federation using Iroh.
Iroh is fucking awesome. It allows each Fedimint guardian to talk to each other via a relay, sets up P2P communication using hole punching, and uses public keys as identifiers (which allows the servers to change their actual IP address).
Everything can run behind a NAT on your laptop or home server. No domain names, no cloud servers, no open ports. It took us just 15 minutes to set one up with zero networking issues.
Distributed systems magic.

What I want:
- post photos to my own relay
- easy UX for others to view my photos
- possibly have the ability to whitelist some photos for specific npubs (private photos, family members, etc).
I've always wanted more sovereignty over my photos but it seems to always come at the cost of easily sharing them with others. Nostr seems like a good solution for this. Can any clients do this?

Grateful to be able to continue working on fun Bitcoin and Fedimint Lightning stuff.
Also, one thing I am interested in building during this grant is a "collaborative custody" Fedimint module, where the federation can provide one key in a 2-3 multisig. The federation can use FROST to sign transactions. Kind of like a "federated Unchained Capital". Not sure if it will be useful, but I think it will be a fun project.

Yesterday at the Minneapolis Bitcoin meetup, we launched The Minneapolis Fed, which is a Fedimint for our community. I think this is one of the first mainnet community-lead federations and I'm excited to see more federations pop up over the coming year.
We on-boarded attendees using Fedi and @npub1mut…23vg and even had a contest to see who could redeem a 100000 sat ecash note the fastest (shout out to Collin for winning).
Fedimint is still pretty early software so it was made clear that this is still somewhat #Reckless and to use with low value but given that v0.2.1 is the first stable release, we were eager to test it out with some real funds.
It was pretty cool to see federated ecash in action. I know we had an IRL ecash transaction for Real Bedford merch and some attendees reimbursed others for Keeper's Heart Old Fashions. Unfairly cheap too, our federation has no fees!
Given that this Fedimint is for the Minneapolis community, we will be keeping it small and mainly share invite codes during in-person gatherings. So if you want to try it out, be sure to attend a Minneapolis Bitcoin meetup or Minneapolis BitDevs https://bitdevsmpls.org
We are working on a guide that other communities can follow to setup their own federation. And over time this will get easier as we build tools to automate the deployment process.

Pretty big change to Fedimint got merged last week. We switched the consensus algorithm from HBBFT to AlephBFT. This change should improve the latency of Fedimint transactions and also eliminates a lot of redundant code. Shout out to joshican for getting it merged!

The mints won't actually decode the ecash tokens. At least for Fedimint, the lightning integration is via a "lightning gateway". These gateways are lightning nodes and clients of federation(s) and act as a market maker between ecash notes and btc. So assuming cashu can receive via lightning, a fedimint user can pay a cashu mint using a lightning gateway 👊
