I eventually want to write about how awful it is that word gets out about fantastic authors when more famous authors are dreadful in one way or another. Like, I wish readers would’ve been screaming about her excellent work long before Neil Gaiman was awful. I want a world where everyone shouts out fantastic authors because they’re fantastic, not because of what someone else did/does. There’s just something very uncomfortable about how everyone is like, yes, he’s a creep, if you want an author that’s not a creep, you should check her out, and my question to them is, why are you suddenly recommending her now? Even after completing the book, absolutely none of the good reads reviews made any sense to me whatsoever. I feel like now Fedi will at least appear in some alternative lists, alternative comments, comments under posts looking for alternative things, I’m pretty sure it will come up a lot more now compared to when I heard about it in 2017 or so. When I joined in 2017, nobody was writing about it at all in any mainstream platform so I heard about it through one tiny breadcrumb. I just feel incredibly frustrated, especially with folks on the left that really should take the hint after 9 times of VC doing what VC does and cares more about numbers than kicking the Nazis out. To be fair, I used to do the very same thing and never really looked into how horrible anything venture backed anything. was until I actually looked into better alternatives based off a crumb that was left on the mainstream platform I happen to use at the time so I don’t know what the correct solution is, but it is fascinating to watch happen over and over again. I wanted better. I just didn’t know where to go or what to try. I did try looking up alternatives, but absolutely none of the alternatives mentioned were anything close to things like the IndieWeb or Mastodon, etc. there are millions of others that are perfectly fine, not happy, but an accepted fine, with the abuse that mainstream tech does to it’s users. I wish they hadn’t gotten rid of the feature that makes an excel spreadsheet of your entire library. Or did they keep it in, and I just have a buggy version? But i’ve seen this very thing in other sighted friends too. In some ways, I think they’re more susceptible to this kind of thinking because they don’t need to work around things
