It’s personal. It’s about challenging myself in what I am able to accomplish. I do it because I like doing it and want to get better at it. There’s a vague goal in the distance, the feeling that I’m working towards something. Maybe add something to the state of the art, I don’t know.
In terms of selling my work, I do not know what makes others like it. I can just throw it into the ether and hope somebody sees it and wants to buy it.

Here’s an example of how the value of highlights matter.
In the first image I just changed the background to be much brighter.
In the second image I also changed the value of the highlights to fit their new surroundings.
If I don’t do this the objects look out of place, like they don’t belong there.

The interpretation of ‘Yield’ first refers to the fruits. Yield may also speak of giving in, of holding on, or of succumbing to the weight. This painting is about that balance, the feeling of barely holding on. It aims to express both the sense of weight and heaviness, and at the same time a certain elegance.
Perhaps this is something you recognize in your own life. We put so much pressure on ourselves and somehow present it as a kind of virtue.

Stil llife with knife and pumpkin (2025) - Oil on panel, 30x40cm
Focusing on a single object naturally obscures the others, a concept I’ve explored in my recent work. Inspired by masters like Rembrandt and Velázquez, who soften or simplify elements further from the focal point, I take it a step further, dissolving peripheral objects entirely into the background.
This approach adds air to the composition while simultaneously conveying the idea how focus affects context.

I used to use large flat brushes, but it makes strokes really predictable and boring. The combination of tiny yet rough brushes made applying paint, mixing and detailing much more intuitive and interesting.
For the really tiny details I usually wait for it to dry and then finish those with a detail brush. It gives it this rough yet refined finish.

Changes all the time. Lately I use an old short-haired pointy brush. The stiff hairs create this nice rough pattern that works really well when painting at arms length.
I try to make these random strokes to all sides to make the strokes seem.. random.. If that makes sense.

Domain names are like €15 per year, sometimes much cheaper, so that’s not the issue.
Best advantage is that the setup time for a simple website is waay faster and no hosting services required. It saves like €30 per month and you get to have a landing page for your business.

Red pepper study (2025) - Oil on panel 12x12cm
Curious how I finished this painting? I’ve added the steps on how I do this:
1. I first block in the colors roughly. I pick a thick haired brush to achieve a rougher finish.
2. Once blocked in, it’s easier to compare the image with the result. I purposefully stand at arms length. This method allows me to get the general tones right first without losing myself too much in the details.
3. Finally I take a fine small brush to refine the details. Depending on how refined I want them to be I might let the painting dry first. With this one, I kept it rough, so I painted wet-in-wet.
4. Result.
