Arké is self-custodial. The app relies on iCloud and Keychain, which iOS users already trust. An Esplora server helps with bitcoin network data, and an Ark server helps with payments. When you hide your balance in Arké, you see a nice scenic view of a Tuscan landscape instead. I find it feels quite nice. A masked balance ("*****") still makes you think about the balance. A nice landscape is more relaxing.

Arké is coming along nicely. I like this phase where you do a ton of small iteration and tweaking and you can feel the overall experience becoming more polished and smooth.
And I am sure a whole bunch of my decisions will prove to be wrong in user testing. But that’s no reason not go out with opinionated UX.

Super messy Arké update, but here we go. Unilateral exit, fee summary, activity & console. Like insurance, unilateral exit is one of those things that you really never want to use, but still want to have just in case. So if the Ark server goes away, you can still recover your funds. Still need to wrangle a lot of tech into submissions and polish the UI to glory.

I always take a ton of screenshots when I build something, and annotate them thoroughly. That, and tons of testing, is pretty much the only way to be sure it's all smooth and polished.

Working through the unilateral exit in Arké. I think it can be pretty simple in the end, but there's a lot of complexity under the hood to work through. It's an essential part, as this is what lets you recover your bitcoin even if the server that facilitates your payments goes away (or turns into a diamond-covered skull, I heard that could happen).

This is an example with a rich BIP-21 URI (like what you might get from clicking a link at a checkout)). Instantly parsed and evaluated. Payment meta data is easy to see. Payment options (addresses) are matched against existing contacts, networks verified, balances checked, fees evaluated, and the best option highlighted. Just hit send and done. What do you make of that?

Arké now also has a consolé. Very handy for doing some manual operations during development. Took 3 chats to build this with Claude in Xcode, mostly because I knew exactly what parts needed to be touched and also set up just a little bit of the skeleton to give Claude a more narrow scope. Such a breeze to build with.

As I've been working on the Ark prototype, I tried to feel out the economic viability of the system, which can be a make or break. One part of is that every ASP is its own separate microcosm. That seems manageable for bitcoin payments, but adds exponential complexity for the advanced stuff in Arkade (lending, swaps, etc). And it seems like a centralizing force that will put intense pressure on ASPs and also invite regulatory scrutiny.
- Stablecoins are locked into individual ASPs - how many of those will Tether/etc support?
- Will ASPs need to provide liquidity for non-bitcoin assets also?
- What if a liquidation cascade depletes ASP liquidity? What if rounds are too slow?
- Is there unilateral exit for non-bitcoin assets?
- If your app only implements the payments part, are you still exposed to the other dynamics?
Do I have an answer, or understand the complexities of all this? Certainly not. If you do, congrats, please share. Intuitively, I prefer simpler systems. How do you think about these things?

Regarding graduated wallets, the multiple wallets reference design in the Bitcoin Design Guide goes in that direction. Multiple different setups in the same application for different use cases and appropriate levels of security. https://bitcoin.design/guide/multiple-wallets/
Where the activity seems currently in the ecosystem seems to be around whether Ecash, Ark, Spark, etc have a place at the very low-end for really small amounts.

I like asking AI to summarize and evaluate podcast transcripts (when I don't have time, or for a second perspective on certain topics). Claude is really good at this. Now for the first time I did this for a podcast that I was a guest at. Feels weird, but it is very helpful. Sounds like I am doing OK overall, but should give more specific examples and discuss design trade-offs and learnings more. Do you do this?

Just one more thought - why is twittery the goal? Can Nostr be more than that? Or have its own unique angle? People are on TikTok, Snapchat, Twitch, etc, which all have their own approaches to social interaction. Maybe Nostr can have its own thing, too?

If this is the case, it would not surprise me. Early on in an ecosystem, it's about maturing the tech and infrastructure to a decent point. Then it commoditizes a bit, and the user experience gaps become more prevalent.

Good to be sensitive to how your data is being used. However, the lady in this video is wrong at least about the Apple Intelligence Reports. The Bitcoin Core App is making progress. The block status has been implemented for the most part and the basic wallet features are there as well. Currently, the dev team is sorting out some stuff around code organization and build system - basically how this new application code fits in with the rest of Bitcoin Core code. And then afterwards we'll get back to UI implementation. Fingers crossed we can get a public release within a year or so, once the implementation has reached feature parity with the current QT GUI. It's a big, big project.

WCAG 2.1 color contrast guidelines are a bit of a disservice to design. Color and contrast perception is much more complex than two simple ratios for small and large text.
Modern operating systems have tons of features that allow users to adjust text size, contrast, etc. Perception changes based on ambient lighting and smartphones adjust the display to those conditions. There are also different font weights, and fonts with different characteristics (like the fine lines of Bodoni), as well as effects like outlines and drop-shadows. As well as different use cases - reading dense scientific material strains eyes more than a quick scan of some news headlines.
WCAG 2.1 is like a blunt instrument. It can be a good starting point, but it's not the end-all-be-all (APCA is a good step forward). A more sophisticated approach also takes these other factors into consideration. Unlike designing for print, screen interfaces can be super dynamic and responsive and adjust to whatever the user needs and wants.

I've seen two hype waves around chat/voice interfaces before, making me a bit skeptical about whether those can ever work. First one was when Intercom and co were a big deal (2012 or so), and every website just had to have a chatbox. Then Alexa and co launched a few years later. Tons of experimentation with voice that didn't go far. Sure, we have AI now, but I am still skeptical. Voice/chat are so imprecise and slow compared to a keyboard and a mouse (or even fingers on a touch screen).
But I am always happy to be proven wrong. AI has already given us lots of superpowers, maybe there are more to come.

I'd say Figma and Sketch for many digital designers. Complemented with photo editing tools like Pixelmator and image gen like Midjourney. Also tools like Spline for 3D and Rive for motion. They could take fresh, focused approaches and don't have to deal with the weight of their legacy. Print still seems to be mostly with the Adobe toolbox.

If there was an award for least intuitive design tool, Adobe InDesign would be my clear favorite. Even after decades of occasional use, selecting things, changing a color, resizing an image, and other super basic stuff remains absolutely unintuitive and I have to keep asking AI for how those things work. Always makes me super appreciative of the latest generation of design tools.
