LLM advocates and their enablers will hide the fact that they are posting stolen code— they brag about this, their most widely-effective argument for LLM code being allowed in OSS is "if you tell us we can't, we'll do it and not tell you"— and attempts to track which open source projects use stolen code will be harassed off the Internet. I do not want to be part of this open source community, so the only options I seem to have are to wall myself off from it, or stop doing open source altogether.

A theory I have seen and find compelling is that they are trying to increase the cost of using an external ad network. If you cut a deal with Unity to use their ad network instead of your homegrown ad network, they'll give you a discount and cancel out the increased costs.

To be clear, "it's there but you can turn it off" is not enough for me, I already stopped using SwiftKey, Microsoft Windows, Miro, etc on the basis of "we put AI in the software with an option to turn it off". If an org ships a "generative AI" product I want to boycott them and I want everyone to boycott them until they go out of business. I don't want a virus on my hard drive even if it's turned off. But Mozilla's ever-shifting checkbox scavenger hunt has never *resembled* "can easily turn off"

There is something called the "Crunchyroll Store". I don't know what they sell, I assume anime. On Oct 22 they sent me an email titled "Oops! You *can* build a decentralized technical / internet system which is actually decentralized, of course. There are lots of examples of that too. But since that isn't the kind of system capitalism naturally builds, what you probably won't do is get *funding* to create that system. And that means *completing* your decentralized system is hard and gets harder the further past 1990 we get and the more you expect your decentralized system to do.

Capitalism is *all about*, at its core, building decentralized systems which on inspection turn out to be centrally controlled, or controlled via a "one dollar one vote" democracy of the five or six richest people in the system (in other words informal centralization, without the committee that makes the decisions having a name).
The decentralized internet systems that capitalism builds reflect this. There's lots of examples of it. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bluesky.

Questionable Content that just went up is raising *really* interesting typography questions. The robots talk in a different font than the humans. But in this strip we see people *texting*, the texting font is different from either the humans-talk or robots-talk font, *but Bubbles is texting in a different font from anyone else, even the other robots*. So here's what stops me from using Passkeys.
- I want Passkeys.
- I want to use "BitWarden".
- BitWarden can use passkeys on all my platforms incl Android.
- However, I do not install BitWarden on all my computers, because I don't trust some of them to hold my BitWarden vault.
- This means I have to have a way of "airgapping" the passkey— some way of using a passkey on a phone, is a computer.
- The ONLY way to do this the FIDO Alliance allows requires Bluetooth.
- My computer doesn't have that.

One thing about "AI" is with the technology OpenAI has (large neural network plus manual tagging) you could've made the best search engine ever. There could be a Copilot where you describe what you wanted and it finds an example of it in the corpus of open source software. You could go from a fuzzy image description to a stock image. These would be better than buggy code and fucked up images. But they wouldn't do that because the *service* OpenAI provides is obscuring that the content is stolen.

@nprofile…2n40 My working model is that if AI can be successfully used for a job, that job didn't need to get done at all. Someone who chooses to use AI is making a judgement "it's okay if this job is done wrong"; if it's okay if the job can be done wrong, then logically it follows it could be skipped completely.
If the higher you get in an organization, the more you can successfully use AI without anyone noticing the difference, then what does this say about top-heavy organizations?

The lack of functional discovery features on Mastodon is so nice. One of the worst experiences on Bluesky is making a post and then 18 hours later completely random people start Discovering it. And they're almost never happy to see it, nor do they remotely understand the intent or context. Make a post for your friends on Bluesky and wake up the next morning to a bunch of messages from mystery people along the lines of "why did you post this??". And I just want to know well why did you read it??

Yeah so Bluesky has been down for like an hour. Anyone not on a self hosted PDS just gets a spinner if they open the app. I'm self hosted, so *I* can log in and post, and I can see my own posts, but because Bluesky uses the "it's not a blockchain, I promise!" relay system, I can't see anyone ELSE'S posts, not even if they're self hosted too.
