Distill water where you live at least once. A great test for tolerance of tap water is what the dregs in the boiling chamber smell like after you are done distilling. I disagree completely, and this assertion would condemn virtually every functional Christian nation in history. The Church with the most valid claim to apostolic succession, the Orthodox Church, is siloed into national autocephalies. I am not Orthodox and think Orthodox has its own problems, but this idea that Christianity precludes any kind of ethnonationalism is not only an ahistorical modernism that rejects the vast majority of Christian history, but once again rejects a significant, though smaller and more historically rooted swath of present day Christians.
I also largely think it is a theological fiction created by Catholics and scandicucks that are so opposed to loving their neighbor that they would rather pretend they are St. Philip the Evangelist (who happened to incidentally baptize all of two Ethiopians in his neighborhood) by overrunning his countrymen and pimping his daughter to hordes of tribalist muds and Moslems. It's an incredibly destructive and anti-Christian idea.
Disciple to all ye nations means sending missionaries to them and sharing the good news, not importing whole digit chunks of their populations. And, as a prerequisite, requires there to be nations in the first place, which at the time the verse was put to text was virtually synonymous with ethnicity. The declaration of Christianity as a corrosive solvent that is designed to erode national unity and boundaries is the most disgusting and abhorrent idea that I could imagine. I would never associate the glory and love of Jesus Christ with such an idea.

You can say this stuff, and maybe you have fooled yourself into believing it, but these are in actuality examples of the richest countries on Earth that have numbers that people can verify. Arguably there are other countries that don’t publish numbers so we can’t verify their success.
In contrast, if you want to find countries that are not regulated very much you can look at Somalia, Yemen, and South Sudan. You should move to one of these charming unregulated locales and show us the success that a lack of government regulation generates.

This anime, “FX Fighter KURUMICHAN” is absolutely demonic and the most unbelievably unethical thing I have potentially ever seen out of Japan, an island whose most notable outputs are animated services for pedophiles and videos of desperate nude women drinking slurries of blended cockroaches. And nobody is actually withdrawing these foreign currencies to their local bank accounts so if you’re short on reserves you can just fudge the books of your customers. They are all doing this!
This is a cartoon. For children and emotionally stunted, lonely and vulnerable adults. And the very explicit message of it is — “your family is in a vulnerable financial situation? Just download an FX app and you will become a real financial professional in our totally not rigged not casino!” This is encouraging children to become fish and lose their money. The closest thing to your libertarian vision that existed was the First transcontinental railroad, which went largely through uninhabited territories in the Western half of the United States, and was still initially done by the Department of War as a result of a Congressional query, as well as the initial seed funding by the government. It was later funded significantly by Union Pacific (Mormons) — but it all hinged on the right of way corridor granted by Congress. If the railroad hadn’t had the authority to force its railway, it would have had to negotiate with everyone who owned land along the route, and would have been held up indefinitely.
Regardless, we aren’t in the frontier anymore. Africa is the last place you would potentially be able to do something in regards to rail and roads as lassie-faire as the (still incredibly government involved) first transcontinental railroad, but you’re going to need the materiel and the will to genocide the locals, because they aren’t going to just let you do it.

Due to the fact that it is illegal in the relevant European nations to explain the econegrics of the situation, I would like to explain to the European citizen why train tickets are costing them more than plane tickets.
The majority of expense regarding passenger transport is not related to the medium by which it occurs on. It is cleaning up after the passengers, and managing belligerent and criminal ones. Dealing with people will always be more expensive than fuel. Trains compound this not only because you have far more passengers, but because there are no consequences for the categories of misbehaviors that rapidly escalate the cost of service.
In most countries, unless you are having a bad reaction to lawfully acquired Ambien, you are generally going to catch a felony charge for engaging in what we might describe as “wilin’ out” or “chimping” on a flight. There are always specific statutes, generally mandated by various international conventions and concerns of the insurance companies that insure the owners of the jets, written to ensure that people who are criminally disruptive on a flight face extreme penalties. But there are no such statutes on a train.
Passenger rail operators are now self-selecting for the most undesirable, riotous, behaviorally antisocial, criminal, and expensive passenger possible. So it costs more to transport them.
European countries without significant diversity still have cheaper train tickets than plane tickets domestically.

I was one of the first two political bans on Twitter. Despite some people being unbanned, I am informed by people close to Twitter that I am on a list of people not allowed to use the Internet, and permanently barred from the service. I will not be getting unbanned.
If you use centralized social media, as far as I am concerned, it is no different than snitching. You are encouraging your friends to use a platform that is inherently controllable by the state and actively moderated by multiple state and ethnic authorities. Those who have done time or know targets of law enforcement will be familiar with the concept of “dry snitching” — essentially, putting information that you know law enforcement will be interested in within public view or some sort of side channel, in hopes that you will be spared interrogation.

That being said, your concern is slightly legitimate. A lot of focus *is* being given to Shor over other algorithms and potentially making money off of Bitcoin derivatives markets is a major part of that motivation. Which is exactly why we need to start taking this seriously and have planned quantum resilience baked into Bitcoin. I’d like to see FIPS-204/205 and eventually 206 when it becomes solidified as a standard be made into wallet formats. So that I can have an n-in-n multisig with taproot and all the new algorithms for my life savings, in hopes that at least one will remain invulnerable through the coming era.
If you are right and quantum never materializes as a threat to elliptic curves, we will have accomplished less, but it will be at least enough for my peace of mind (I have 90% of my net worth in Bitcoin) and it will also let the general market see in the interim that Bitcoin developers and the community have taken potential threats seriously.
If you are wrong and Bitcoin breaks elliptic curves, then we will have saved everything my children are going to inherit.

insane amounts of money was being invested into quantum computing far before Bitcoin existed. Shor discussing his algorithm for factoring cryptographic keys in the context of quantum dates back to the mid nineties. The first demonstration of an actual physical implementation of quantum was over a decade before Bitcoin, and it was for search regardless, not breaking signatures. The whole universe does not revolve around Bitcoin and all of this work began a couple decades before the genesis block.

What's amazing to me in this thread is the psychology of treating signing algorithms like immutable natural laws, with one poster comparing any concern of the future security of Bitcoin’s cryptography to the COVID hoax. ECDSA held up so long and had such a gigantic tower of wealth built on it that people forgot that its immediate predecessor, DSA, became a FIPS standard in 1994 and is now considered horrifically insecure.
Every cryptography algorithm has an expiry date. Everyone over 30 years of age has lived through a major one of these expiry dates. The idea that ECDSA and Schnorr signatures would last for centuries and nothing needs to be done to prepare for their obsolecence is positively laughable.

two of those don't sound like things development resources can be put towards, and the third is a ludicrously unlikely speculative scenario that arguably can’t be mitigated at all. I doubt a few blocks with no fees would discourage people who have invested massive sums in Bitcoin mining ASICs from maintaining the network.
Successful use of Shor’s algorithm on quantum computers to factor wallet private keys is an inevitability, given enough time. I’m not quite so alarmist to think that it is going to happen by 2028. But it is going to happen, that is guaranteed. So there needs to be an additional wallet format that prevents such an attack introduced well before it does. FIPS-204 and FIPS-205 should most likely both be introduced as different wallet schemes simultaneously, so people can do 3 of 3 multisig with both of them and a taproot wallet, given the period of incoming volatility here.

The TV I enjoyed most in 2025 is Lin Jiang Xian. IT is solid enough on the aesthetics and costuming that I do not care about the dopey soundboard or any of the other flaws of the series. I love the bright fantastical palette, the excited wonder of a xianxia universe inhabited by a childlike, idiotic female protagonist that is constantly mocked and berated. Disagree with the reasoning of this thread. Because you can short Bitcoin massively, theoretically much larger than the entire market volume of Bitcoin. For example, the CME Bitcoin spot is a synthetic derivative of exchange prices and doesn’t have to resolve on actual Bitcoin trades. And if you buy puts and sell calls with “stupid” by current market logic strike prices, you could easily entice large numbers of traders into the contracts.
Secondly, aggressively shorting Bitcoin timed before a Shor’s attack could likely earn you tens of billions of dollars, legally. Nobody is going to choose to earn fickle, likely uncashable fake money from hacking banks when you can become a multibillionaire overnight via shorting Bitcoin and keep all the profits.
Thirdly, the people with access first to the number of qubits necessary to do a Shor’s attack on Bitcoin are going to be extremely well capitalized people. Access to quantum computers is currently extremely limited and only available to select institutions. The type of people with access are not going to go on a crimespree. They are incentivized towards protecting the banking system and destroying Bitcoin, not the inverse.
Finally it’s very easy to hack banks already. I’ve never seen a major retail bank I couldn’t break into. It’s stupidly easy to hack banks. The hard part of breaking into banks is not compromising the computers, it is getting the money out.
A viable quantum Shor’s attack would be first used on Bitcoin and nothing else.
Personally, I think Bitcoin will be patched to guard against quantum attacks and a new wallet format will be added like happened for Segwet, far before we get to the point that quantum is a threat. And everyone serious will just add one of these new Quantum wallets to their storage wallets for multisig. So I am not very worried about a quantum attack against Bitcoin, at least not currently. If there were quantum computers close to the likely the number of qubits necessary and no progress on the Bitcoin front I might change my mind. But it is not a concern of mine. But I think the logic people are using to say quantum is not a concern, which this thread is a microcosm of, is very fallacious.

I agree they could have never won. Completely agree. I think it is good they pled out (I said as much in another comment in this thread to someone else). I was hoping they would plea out, because they probably were the worst case to ever possibly bring this case forward. I think they were sure to lose, and insofar as the plea, they made the right decision.
You are missing the point that they were raising money on the explicit basis of “we are going to fight and appeal this”. They got a million dollars to do it, which is at least 20 times what it actually costs to fight this case at trial. Maybe 40. That they were asking for somewhere along the lines of 300-360 times what trial and appeal costs makes it very, very obvious that they did not ever actually intend to fight the case. From the very beginning, this fundraiser is obviously just a means at shekel grubbing. They never intended to do anything but plea, and the monetary theft and fraud they have done to the community is even worse due to the fact that it took attention, thoughtful analysis, and resources away from the people who actually got 30 years at sentencing, are actually appealing their case, and actually intended to do so from the beginning. If you cannot see that, well, perhaps there is something about your cognitive ability that you are not capable of understanding.

I’ve had them raid colocation centers that I’ve hosted in dozens of times to do the same. And I have no assurance that it will not happen again, as I have an inbox full of various notifications of subpeonas being served against me. So the need for my communications to remain secret if my key is compromised is not some abstract thing I am regurgitating from an EFF pamphlet. It is a basic requirement of having a private conversation. And for anyone at risk of unlawful, arbitrary, and capricious arrest and device seizure at the hands of authorities (virtually all Americans — maybe where you live is better), it is a very real need.

if there were an onion service keypair derived from the nsec, so that it was reproducible, and launched locally automatically by a client for the purpose of providing a Nostr relay for both the user’s own posts and DMs, it would make nip17 competitive with other messengers on the basis of privacy.
There’s messengers that already do this. Briar, Ricochet Refresh. Of course, it requires you to wait until your client is on at the same time as your conversation partner’s for message delivery if you aren’t using external relays for gossip.
Short of that being implemented, it is unlikely that a fraction of a percent of nip17 users will ever operate a private inbox relay.

Signal had a protocol spec from day 1 with nearly all basic requirements of a messaging service. Nostr has 2 NIPs, neither of which have been well thought out by someone who understands cryptography. NIP-17’s spec mentions “optional forward secrecy” but the author doesn’t seem to understand that forward secrecy means something in a cryptographic context or how it might be achieved. And if you have forward secrecy, why would you make it optional? Most messengers people actually use have forward secrecy as part of the protocol, with no way to opt-out. Signal, WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Facebook messenger. The only messengers that arguably do not have it are Viber and Telegram, the latter having it optional for its “secret chats”.
“Things just move slowly” is a poisonous phrase in terms of making a widely adopted technology product. And it is less about moving slowly and more about people just going in completely different directions. Right now if things were moving faster, the ecosystem would just fragment faster. There’s not even an attempt to put developers on the same page or curate NostNostrents towards a reasonable standard. It’s a clusterfuck.
Ideally, people would be seeking to copy White Noise, as it properly uses Double Ratchet (much like Signal and WhatsApp) instead of NIP-17. But even everyone agreeing to use NIP-17 would be better than the current situation, which is a multitude of incompatible methods that vary by the whim of each client’s developer.

My client doesn’t support NIP-17 and I recently noticed I’d missed a handful of DMs from friends when I opened a NIP-17 supporting client to receive my emails via @npub1p5m…jnut
Imagine a normal person finding out that they didn’t receive messages addressed for them because there are multiple DM specs. They are going to come to the conclusion that Nostr is trash.

Signal has perfect forward secrecy, nip17 does not. White Noise and 0xchat’s “secret chats” have better mechanisms for forward secrecy.
That being said I still do not use Signal, because requiring a phone number is now a no-go for me. I don’t use any apps that don’t have public key identity now. For messaging I use Session, a signal fork that does not require a phone number.

Dude, even in present-day conditions the worst offenders of the replication science are in slop fields like “social psychology”, or in fields where the books are cooked by people wanting to appeal to investors (biomedicine) or thinktanks and ideologies (economics).
Even then, with all the perverse incentives and new lower integrity participants allowed to publish as a result of globalization, science is still working quite fine in a statistical sense. Okay I really didn’t notice for a long time that my client doesn’t seem to support NIP-17 DMs at all. I just started using @npub1p5m…jnut which I think is the most awesome service on Nostr. I found it by accident, searching for a domain name while building the exact same product. But the DMs didn’t come through. So I pop open a second client that supports NIP-17 DMs and notice that I not only have the messages from Mailstr but some other people who have DM’d me in the past.
This is why I have a Session ID in my profile — because DMs on Nostr are a *complete fucking disaster*. There is only one reasonably good UI/UX experience for normal users on MacOS Desktop — @npub1n0s…k6h0 — and it doesn’t support NIP-17. Imagine talking to a normal person and them being told that they didn’t get the DMs from their girlfriend because there are multiple fucking ways to send a DM on Nostr. This is horrific and I can’t believe there isn’t a concerted push to demand everyone pick whatever a standard is and stick with it.
To make this even worse, NIP-17 is also a stupidly broken standard. The spec mentions “optional forward secrecy” but the author doesn’t seem to understand how forward secrecy is achieved or the idea that the phrase actually means something in the context of cryptography (this is maximally cringe). Only 0xchat’s “Secret Chats” or White Noise provide reasonable mechanisms for Forward Secrecy, and they aren’t even NIPs at all. Don’t send me messages via either of these, because they only provide phone apps and I do not use phones. The only way to fix things is to make the situation temporarily worse — create a *brand fucking new* protocol NIP for DMs from someone that understands what “forward secrecy” means and scream at client maintainers until they all implement it. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Recently a longtime associate of mine asked about the origin of the slur "dog brain" which is now used almost exclusively against women. As a longtime connoisseur of rape, misogyny, verbal abuse, and physical violence towards women, I decided to investigate the history of this beloved and alluring term which so accurately describes the female psyche.
The insult "dog-brained" first appears in print in 1835, in Robert Montgomery Byrd's The Infidel, Or the Fall of Mexico: https://archive.org/details/cortesorfallmex02birdgoog
"Dog-brained churl and ass" one of the main characters used to rebuke a Mexican. Byrd is a name I recognized from reading his "Nick of the Woods", which is an awesome novel about committing revenge genocide against Injuns that I actually recommend you read if you're into Tom Quick the Indian Slayer portrayed as a emotionally tortured Quaker. I also searched for "dog brain" up until 1835 just to confirm Byrd as the originator of the term as an insult -- every prior usage of dog brain is in reference to actual canine grey matter. Dog brained is then used again by an author of no renown in another novel in 1878, and in a short story in Munsey's Magazine at the turn of the century. It then disappears from publication for decades.
It returns as a more pointed insult in the 1970s, used against Communists, "dog-brained bureaucrats of the Soviet Union" in Finis Farr's 1975 "Fair Enough: The Life of Westbrook Pegler" and expliticly misogynistic "DOG BRAINED BITCH!" in a 1979 issue of Denver Quarterly, in reference to an obese and ugly woman.
Then it nearly disappears from publication again, besides a single instance in a TV guide in the 80s. Then in 1995 Laurence James under the pseudonym James Axler used the phrase in his "Shadowfall", the 26th book in the Deathlands saga, which is about a postapocalyptic society of eternal road war. From there the most common instance in the phrase is in multiple publications dedicated to FASA's franchise Shadowrun starting with 1998's Psychotrope. As far as I can tell, Shadowrun is the first instance of a society of multiple authors using the term in a small community and likely the body of authors which popularized the term for general usage. After that it reentered the common vernacular and there are a lot of post-2010 uses of the term.
As far as I can tell "dog brain" and "dog brains" as a noun used to describe people rather than "dog-brained" as an adjective is a development that came with social media.
Dog-brained has its linguistic origins in a documented genocide appreciator and a notable history of being leveled as a term against communists and women, making it extremely based and redpilled. I recommend you use this term more often and also inform those using it about its storied roots in Racial Holy War, woman-hatred, and anti-Communist polemic.

To me it's even worse because it incentivizes future grifting. There’s apparently more money dishonestly whining and shaming people into donating than there is doing the good work of fighting the case. They spend a couple years in prison and their kids get a six figure check. Fighting the good fight cost me everything. I got nothing out of it. It took bread off the table of my children. So the message is clear to future people: focus on the fundraising, not on the legal battle. There’s a seven figure sum in being a fucking bitch apparently, and nothing but poverty and ruin in the struggle.
