The basic follow functionality of Nostr is outbox-model-powered follow lists, that doesn't need to be solved.
But follow lists don't protect from reply spam, and they don't solve the need that some people have for seeing feeds of content from people they don't follow. Relay-based users and content curation and pubkey whitelisting do.

I'm not opposed to it, but I'm not sure it would help. There is a circular problem involved:
I don't think we've solved advertisements / discovery on Nostr, have we? We can publish stuff announcing something. for example I want to announce that I'm selling a CD player, but who is going to read that announcement? Our followers?
The way most dumb clients would do today is probably to publish that to wss://relay.damus.io, wss://nos.lol and others, then display all announcements from those big relays. This obviously cannot work in the medium term, as such a feed built from these unrestricted relays will be easily flooded with garbage as soon as it becomes mildly popular, and these relays become centralized points-of-failure that deny all the properties of Nostr.
How then?
Once we solve this we can have reliable advertisements of anything, including relays. But since I imagine the only solution to this is by relying on relay-based curation and relay recommendations then we're back at square one?

Also, if a relay represents a niche group or more-or-less semi-closed community and is often browsed like such, searching inside of it becomes trivial for all the moments when you want to recall something you know you saw there. This is equivalent to searching a Discourse or a Reddit.
NIP-50 can also be used in specific NIP-29 groups and even for searching multiple groups that you belong to at once. That's basically all the search functionality that Telegram, Slack and Discord offer.

Search on outbox relays directly fixes 80% or more of all generic "search" use cases. We almost can live without big centralized search indexers if we can do full-text search directly from the source of people we're interested in.
1. If I want to search for something specifically said by someone (on Twitter there existed a "by:" special directive when searching, I basically always used that) I can search their outbox relays directly.
2. If I want to search for something and I'm not sure who said it: it goes a long way to search each of my follows' relays, as that thing that I saw is likely to having been said by someone I follow.
3. The point above can be expanded to follows-of-follows: it may take more time, but such cases of search are rare enough that the user can be expected to endure through a "loading" bar while the client tries to search some hundreds of relays.

The easiest way to make a web client compatible with mobile signers like Amber and Primal and Aegis and Nowser and others I forgot.
You just write your app assuming that the user has an extension that provides NIP-07 (`window.nostr`) capabilities and include the <script>. If the user actually has an extension nothing happens, if he doesn't then the script is activated and everything is handled in the background.

The new #pyramid release v1.0.21 includes, among other things:
- a new (very simple) sub-relay "personal" that each member can use to store their own stuff others can't read (well, the pyramid owner can), like a personal note-taking service:

It tries to be good about it. Like it will allow you to choose the language used for analyzing and stemming note contents (more than one language can be selected, in which case a magical system will select one for each incoming note automatically).
It will also act smartly about indexing mentions, quotes and URL references in notes. For example if you index something that has a "nostr:npub1..." in it then later search for "nostr:nprofile1..." with the same npub you'll find that first note (and vice-versa). If your query includes a reference to the npub of the note author that will also work (although using {"authors": ["<pubkey>"]} also works the same).
And the query language supports basic stuff like "banana OR mango" or even "apple AND NOT strawberry". Exact matches enclosed with double quotes are also supported.

I like NIP-17 and I think it can be very good and smooth, with better UX than everything else (except Telegram).
I don't know if they can take Nostr to a new level of popularity, but I want to stop using Telegram and would be happy we had Android and Desktop apps that worked correctly and respected DM relays list and were in fact lightweight and fast.

If you're working on a JavaScript client for NIP-34/Grasp git repositories you should use https://jsr.io/@fiatjaf/git-natural-api to fetch git data directly from the servers without having to clone the full repository.
It also works with GitHub, GitLab and others together with https://cors.isomorphic-git.org/ so you don't need to call proprietary APIs).

I've once thought the "secret" was a secret and could be relied upon as an authorization token, but I realized that couldn't be it since most clients only called "connect" once with the secret, so it is de facto a nonce, the NIP should make this explicit. Someone please send a PR editing it.
On the other hand for https://viewsource.win/fiatjaf.com/promenade I didn't use a secret at all, instead the bunker URI has a random pubkey in it that isn't the actual user pubkey, so it can be used and reused as an authorization token, i.e. anyone with the bunker URI can connect. I think this is fine for most cases too.

#nak v0.18.1 has a command @npub1a6w…0tyc has wanted for years: if you have a "nak bunker" running somewhere you can call "nak bunker connect 'nostrconnect://...'" in another terminal and it should work.
If your bunker is running with a persisted --profile flag then apply that flag to "nak bunker connect" too.

Yes, everything is in that ./data folder.
The mmmm.lock file should get removed automatically when the server stops, but it might hang there if it crashed or other mysterious circumstances. You can just delete it (as long as you're sure you're not going to run two instances of pyramid at the same time with the same database).

Or maybe I don't understand what exactly you mean by "moderation tools". You said it can't be just the ability to ban a specific person, so what could it be?
What comes to my mind is something like:
- allow friends-of-friends of maintainers to send issues/patches/etc;
- if you're not in the friend-of-friend whitelist you have to pass some arbitrary criteria like, I don't know, paying some satoshis, burning your CPU a little, passing a captcha or doing a phone KYC with some trusted server (all bad solutions, but what can I do);
- allow blocking specific people that pass the criteria above.

This stuff happens by default on GitHub (and similar places) because GitHub (and similar places) gives everybody the illusion that every user is equally legitimate once they've passed the initial phone KYC sign up process.
In Nostr there is no entity to say who is a valid user and who isn't, so in the long run everybody is forced to use some kind of filter, otherwise they will drown in spam.
I believe the best simple method for such filtering, when browsing an unknown place like a thread on someone else's profile (or git repository), is to only fetch stuff (replies, reactions, proposed patches etc) from the relays announced by the profile/repository you're browsing.
Assuming software is made to use that filtering method the default, then it becomes trivial for the repository owners to control whose comments get to show up to an unwary passerby.

I ended up implementing a way to remove a user but keeping them in the tree, that should probably be the default action when deleting someone.
I had to because I realized that @npub1jk9…lqz7 is flooding wss://pyramid.fiatjaf.com/ with a million notes with ugly images but he has invited a ton of people that I don't want to remove.

Unfortunately I haven't seen your DMs, but Nostr wasn't really designed to do DMs, so I have that excuse.
Now, it can be adapted to do DMs reliably I think, but the implementation is lacking. With an extra 10% implementation effort we could have reached reliable DMs a long time ago, but probably haven't yet because the "let's all agree to use the same hardcoded relays" mentality took hold too much on most developers' minds.
In your analogy the shift required is turning UDP into TCP or something like that (but I don't know if I like the analogy).

I didn't read the full discussion, but npubs are definitely insufficient.
That's why we have nprofiles, nip05s or at least the dependency on a client having access to a greater ecosystem of recent events from other people that may provide updated hints to the relays of a bare npub, ideally through some form of local database. It's all on a best-effort basis, no mathematical guarantees, but I think that suits the messy world we live in very well.

That is the idea. I don't know what exactly you mean by a themed relay, but you can invite like-minded people and get them to do manual themed curation using the /favorites sub-relay.
Or you can get them to talk to each other either in groups or in the /internal relay about some theme, like a community.
Or you can get them to curate public posts submitted to the /moderated relay, ensuring those meet some standards.
If you are aiming for a curated experience you must be more selective with who you invite, as anyone invited will have the power to curate decide what goes in the thing. But if you're aiming for a community to live inside the relay you'll want to be more liberal and get more people.
Let me know if you need some crazy feature that isn't implemented yet.

That is a surprisingly hard problem, unless I make you adopt those users automatically when deleting their parent. Or what do I do instead?
If you're inclined to adoption you can do that manually already, by the way. You can have the same user be invited by multiple users currently, so if it is deleted in one branch of the tree it's still alive on the other.
On https://basspistol.org there is an example of that happening.

Yes, I can make it configurable, but I never hit that limit myself, so please ensure that if you are running behind a reverse proxy you are passing the X-Forwarded-For header to the relay.

On vnak it will authenticate to any relay provided that you have set a main secret key at the top.
On nak you have to pass --sec and --auth. There is also --force-pre-auth for when the relay doesn't send an "auth-required:" message but you want to auth anyway.

https://viewsource.win/ now supports:
- displaying information about the latest commit
- a page with commit history
- fetching directly from github.com, codeberg.org, gitlab.com
- displaying README files automatically when no filepath is provided
- browsing the repository at any commit, branch or tag

All without having to clone the repository or download a ton of stuff (if the server supports filters, which most should and eventually will).

"load profile" is for loading preexisting profiles created with "nak bunker --profile". That isn't well-developed yet, I should have probably hidden that button for now.

- primitive blossom support with a simple dashboard and upload button
- if you just publish an event with a date in the future it will be scheduled and automatically released at that date
- an option to automatically opentimestamp every note published to the relay
