I don't know of many Orthodox books, though The Papacy and the Orthodox by A. Edward Siecienski has been on my reading list for a bit. I think it's written by an Orthodox scholar, but I'm not 100% that's the case.
The book is crazy expensive, but the NYPL gave me free web access which I downloaded for later reading. If you do consider it, check out some libraries before dumping three figures on a book.

Maybe I'm just misunderstanding the graph, but based on it alone it looks to me like Brexit had no effect on UK/EU GDP per capita? Everything's the same until the covid crash, then the UK remained in a lead until ~2023 when it dropped below. That's ~7 years after the referendum and ~3 years after officially leaving the EU. Unless post covid recovery due to the UK's independence is what you're referring to?

I've been working at a place that that provides critical infrastructure as if late.
* I never showed ID to anyone
* I work out of a building that requires an RFID card to be scanned in. I have not been issued an RFID card, and have had no problems entering it without it.
* I have admin access to technical systems I'm not supposed to touch, and physical access to just about everything (again, no empoyee ID/access card).
* I have not been added to payroll yet, but if I keep hounding them about it they might update it eventually.
Anyone got any doomsday prepper resources? 😆

I sometimes write (journal entries and otherwise) and then later scan to files to use along side typed documents. I feel like sometimes I can type faster than I can think, but think faster than I can write, so writing kind of keeps me more mentally focused if that makes any sense. But it's usually with a pilot/parker pen of some sort, I've never used a feather pen or anything else I'd need to soak in ink.

Just finished reading Exit Strategy by Jen J. Danna. It's been on my (metaphorical) shelf for a while, I think I found it a few years ago Dollar Tree. Started reading it during a power outage the other day, and got hooked pretty fast.
A lot of books are a bit bulkier, scifi/fantasy books that have a lot of world building and really detailed plotlines. Exit Strategy has a lot "smaller" of a story for a lack of a better term (smaller stakes, humanity isn't at stake or anything, + a smaller cast of characters), and it takes probably a dozen or so pages to introduce the setting and then gets right into the main plot.
It moves quickly, in the ~300 or so pages it has a self contained story that's moves rapidly. There's not a lot of subplots and it doesn't meander too much, so it's a fairly linear story throughout the entire book that doesn't get boring. Characters seem human, not just cardboard cutouts or with crazy inhuman smarts/skills/etc. Definitely worth a read.

I had a Nokia phone before, they've got a decent camera and are often absurdly cheap if you get one locked to your carrier. I think the one I used had an unlockable bootloader too, though no idea if the newer ones do.

You think a quick docker compose file with cloudflare tunnel and a relay would be something to consider as well (or, alternatively, just a bash script to install cloudflared + a relay)? Most people here are probably technical enough to do something like that, and running it on an old laptop or Raspberry Pi might be something interesting to a lot of people if it was pretty much plug and play without need of a static IP or open port.

Finished reading Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin recently, it's a really good read. At the start it feels like the writing keeps branching in unrelated ways, only to abandon the plotlines and jump to something seemingly unrelated, but it all comes together in the latter half of the book. A very interesting read with a fairly unique execution.

I personally think that Bluesky's PDSs should have remained neutral infrastructure. Before, when they were like that, you could effectively build out your own platform using Bluesky's infrastructure for hosting, kinda bootstrapping the protocol and letting anyone build a platform with the rules of their choosing.
Now that Bluesky moderates at the PDS layer AND the relay layer, and since they host the vast majority of AT Proto infrastructure, they've more or less locked the entirety of AT into Bluesky's community guidelines. (Who'd want to build a platform on AT with different guidelines, if no user of Bluesky - which is practically the entire network - could partake in said alternative AT platform?)
As far as other platforms though, I'm more agnostic on neutral PDSs - if I understand the issue with that controversy it was with Blacksy. If an alternative platform moderates at the PDS layer that's not going to effectively apply the rules to all of AT like Bluesky can. Once a protocol is more widespread individual instances of it can have a diverse set of rules, but if one instance (e.g. Bluesky Corporate) can apply it's rules to the entire network before it expands, then the protocol could be captured and prevented from expanding beyond that initial niche base that captured it.

My reading kinda ebbs and flows, but I've been reading a fair but lately. Over the last month or so I've read two books in their entirety, read parts of another one or two, and re-listened to a 6 book audiobook series. A lot of times I use audiobooks and ebooks via TTS as background audio when working/gaming/driving etc.
Overall, if audiobooks count, maybe 30-50. If audiobooks (and using TTS to read some or all of an ebook) don't count then maybe 2-10 depending on the year. But just a rough guess.

I think that's no different than the US; social media companies aren't liable for what's their users do if they moderate in good faith. But if something is reported and then if they fail to remove it, or they otherwise know about problematic content and don't remove it, they become liable.

I have coreboot on a Chromebook running Debian, but that's more so just because I needed a real bootloader than me seeking out coreboot. I've never had coreboot on a device that had a functional bootloader by default.

I certainly prefer it, although I sometimes go with legacy BIOS on PC since I'm lazy and don't feel like dealing with graphics drivers shenanigans. A locked bootlocker on my phone though (as apposed to my laptop that is only ever at home or a workplace) feels more non negotiable to me. My 2c anyways.

I couldn't find the oil & filter type in my car's manual, and the table of contents wasn't helping me, so I just asked AI (specifically Brave's ask feature) and it gave me a page number.
The page was 396 - a general maintenance overview page. While it didn't have the information I was looking for, that page mentioned page 243 which had the specs that I needed.
Maybe it's not a good sign my dumb self couldn't find it, but I'd say it was pretty impressive of the tool that it could point me to the right page on a random car manual (at least in a round about way).

I don't know exactly what the "advanced flow" to install 'unverified' software is going to look like, but Google backtracking on requiring their approval to install apps on your phone is certainly a good thing to hear.
I'm sure they're going to make some sort of really inconvenient hoop to jump through, but I guess just about anything is better than outright preventing it.
As always, though, it's a good time to de-Google you're phone if that's something you'd be up to. It puts a nice little buffer in between you and Google's shenanigans. It's rather nice to be able to treat my phone as ... *checks notes* ... my phone.

I've been on and off toying around with something along those lines. It's a bit tricky (especially for me, who's not a good dev), everything on Nostr is just yeeted everywhere.
Seems like you either need to do encrypted messages like the old DMs, or just do the simple dumb method of trusting relays to only hand off events to people they're supposed to. I'm sure if somebody who knew what they were doing could get something better up and running.

Zapstore, IIRC, distrubutes apks that were signed by the dev (either directly uploaded to the Zapstore or just yoinked from GitHub) - it shouldn't matter whether Google signed the dev's keys or not.
Though I'm not a fan of Google's power grab, it shouldn't effect alternative app stores. It only really effects whether devs themselves can sign apps with a Google approved key. If you're not on a Google certified device (e.g. GrapheneOS) you'll be able to install any app anyway (Google approved or otherwise). If you are on a Google certified device, as long as the person compiling the app had their key approved by Google, you can install that apk from anywhere.
The only store I think it effects is F-Droid. They're insistent on compiling apps themselves, instead of following the standard Android security model and having the dev compile the app. If neither Google or F-droid reverse course F-droid will break on certified Android devices, but otherwise as far as I know everything else should continue as usual.

How would I do that? There doesn't seem to be a way in most clients, and I just tried that on Chorus which adds a user as a member, but doesn't actually approve their posts automatically. It shows up as approved in Chorus but all other clients list posts from Chorus members in the mod queue.

Thanks, yeah I'm referring to NIP 72. Amythest supports it too, but by default both Amythest and Chorus only show annually approved posts by admins/mods AFAIK. I'm more curious is there's a way around needing to manually approve things, since that sounds like a pretty big commitment to micromanage a community like that.

How exactly do Nostr communities work? From the looks of it, if I create a community, I (or people I set as mods) would need to manually approve every single post.
Is there an alternative - be it automatically allowing posts, using WoT, pre-approving people, or some third party bot that auto approves some/all posts?
Or am I just misunderstanding how the modlog works in communities?

I think that's a put, you can pay a fee to be able to sell a stock at current price before a set date of your choosing. If it goes from say 5$ to 1$, you can buy it at 1$ and sell it for 5$, making $4 per stock minus the fees you paid (the longer period in the option the higher the fee).

I've really come to appreciate the simplicity of my ebike and motorcycle. Both are super simple and easy to work on, and parts (first and third party) are super easy to swap out. While the ebike is probably more "computer" than most cars, the controller could be swapped out by unplugging a couple wires (replacing it with a completely different controller if I wanted).
Way better than hooking a code reader to my car or popping the hood - which especially is nice since despite what my post makes it sound, I'm not very good at working on mechanical things.

Depends on definitions. I could forsee a lot of otherwise centralized platforms adopting decentralized protocols - along the lines of Threads adopting ActivityPub or banks utilizing stable coins.
I doubt most people will ever be managing keys, just like most people will probably never be changing their car's oil. But they might very well be using a service that uses decentralized systems under the hood, and would work with people who are using the systems directly.
The only way I'd expect to see a huge bump in people doing this directly is if countries end up completely debasing their currencies or if they completely lock down social media - then there might be a big bump in users in those particular nations.

I always enjoy a good video essay, and it's probably a bit of a different niche that'd reach a different audience (+ more likely to be picked up in a social algo). Though it'd probably take a bunch of extra work scripting and editing to convey approximately the same information as a podcast would.
Also, I'd assume that few who doesn't make a hobby out of tech would find protocols interesting - but might find the benefits of a protocol interesting if it's slightly abstracted from explaining how things work under the hood.
That said, I've never done a podcast or made a long form video essay, so don't put too much stock in my 2c.

Seems to have worked real well. A bit low resolution, but still pretty good (the input images I uploaded have been heavily compressed, their originals were higher res).
However, it doesn't seem to like to do basic edits. I gave it the unedited original (at least the JPEG, it won't touch RAWs) of the milky way version and told it to do similar edits I did to the one I shared (dehaze, saturation, contrast) - and instead of editing it is just replaced the milky way portion with an AI generated image of the milky way that was fairly similar but obviously a new image.

Lol, I swear, last night I was checking out some photos on my chomebook-turned-into-a-standard-laptop and wanted to transfer them to my main computer. There were a fair amount of them, and I didn't want to take up more of my limited space in proton drive, so I thought:
"Hey, might as well use Onedrive. I don't have any files there, so I got like 15gb to spare, and it's not like the photos contain anything I'd care about encrypting (I'll probably post some of my favorites here and on my blog) so no worries about privacy or the lack thereof."
The page wouldn't load, so I figured it was probably something on my end. Tried again this morning and it's still down, turns out they've been down for a bit now. Google nuked peoples drives accidentally not that long ago, and now MS is been down for probably nearly a day. I guess moral of the story, big tech isn't jank free. Syncthing, Proton, and my (no longer existing) Nextcloud installation all are *yet* to have any extended unavailability or data loss.

* A maps app, Organic Maps or OsmAnd work great
* A media player like VLC if you're switching away from something like Spotify or regularly download audio/video from Youtube
* A notes app. I like Joplin for its sync feature, but other tools like Markor, Notally, and Simple notes are all good.
* An RSS reader, its great for following accounts across platforms and beats out most dedicated apps. Read You + Fresh RSS goes great, but Feeder works great too (& has Nostr article support)
* A YT client like NewPipe or Grayjay if you watch/listen to YT on your device
* Some form of cloud storage/sync - be it Proton Drive, Syncthing, Nextcloud, or something else
* Basic offline tools - equate (unit conversion) tape measure, tasks (to do reminders), trail sense (outdoor oriented tools), pocketpal (local llms), Snapseed (photo editor - by Google but runs offline with no G services needed), TTSutil (text to speech or audio file tool)
* Messaging apps - I use Beeper (for Google chat) and Signal because that's what family uses, it'll vary depending on what you need
* App stores - Aurora, F-Droid, Acresent, Zap Store, Obtanium - take your pick
* Termux or the integrated Linux terminal if you want to run CLI software
* Games, there's plenty of foss games to kill time with. A few recommendations: Anuto TD, SuperTuxKart, Unciv, Endless Sky, Tri Peaks, Solitaire, Domination, emulators.
* An ebook reader (I use Librera) + optionally a TTS engine
* And since we're on Nostr: Nostr clients/tools, proxies (vpns, orbot, Tor Browser, I2P), and/or crypto wallets depending on what you're personally looking for.

Random pro tip, pocket notebooks are really handy. They don't actually need to be kept in your pocket, if you regularly carry a backpack or purse/manbag you can toss it in there.
I use my phone for reminders/alarms, and Joplin for syncing long form notes and more reference sort of stuff, but a notebook feels more 'accessible' (for a lack of a better term) and it's easier to flip through a notebook of random stuff than to scroll through an unorganized notes app. For me, I also feel a little more mentally organized having things written out over being typed up. Life's been busy, and having one on hand seems to have helped preserve a bit of sanity.
