Interesting piece. I have always considered enchantment evil ever since I read the intro adventure in the D&D Basic Set. So easy agree there.
Until you mentioned the World of Darkness. Granted that a good portion of the game deals in grey morality. But it leaves me thinking about how some of my characters have used the Dominate power. Say for instance that someone is attacking you. So you Dominate them to stop and leave. Yes, it clearly violates their will, but what are the alternatives? Fight them and cause physical harm? I'm pretty sure that that violates more than just their free will. Perhaps if you could physically restrain them or knock them out, that is generally considered pretty humane, but how is that any different? Basically it'd be the same as your Hideous Laughter exception.
One could certainly argue that even that level of violence is still wrong on some level, but I don't think less so than Dominating them to stop fighting. So if we're going to consider this level of harm to be immoral, then we're going to have to examine a whole lot of other things in a similar light.
And to be honest I do do that level of examination in real life, but I would find it tedious in role playing. But that's just my taste. In the end I think that powers like Dominate can be used in a sufficiently moral way (the best of available options) if not in a "pure" way. Perhaps if my character had a Humanity score of 9 or 10, but that's not what I'm playing Vampire for.
But looking at your examples at the end of the article, they cover a lot of ground there, and would need to be looked at pretty separately. Controlling somebody's body while they remain cognizant of that is bad sure, but so is restraining them, or "legally" arresting them, and that is often seen as "good enough", depending on circumstances and what you are making them do.
Changing someone's decisions either directly or through say memory alteration I see as no less immoral than when someone does so verbally (say with a con artist), or through some other trick. It's just faster. And if you accept that premise, then you just have to examine the morality of dishonesty, and it becomes less about enchantment specifically. One can then think of things like cops going undercover in order to bring down criminals. Heck, if you really want, there's a whole TV series called Leverage about a group that uses elaborate con jobs to bring down powerful bad guys.
So in the end, unless you want to take the pure angle of never doing any sort of harm whatsoever ever, that really enchantment is just another form of power that can be used morally or not. I'll grant that because of how much easier it makes controlling people, that the temptation to abuse it is even greater than with non-magical means, but I don't see that as any argument against its use any more than how technology makes doing immoral things easier, or any other form of magic for that matter.
Interesting; reading your article and then replying to it caused me to re-examine my whole position on the matter, and I went from completely agreeing with your thesis to not. That makes it a very useful piece in my opinion. Good job. (Not trying to shut down the discussion by that BTW.)

In my early teens, I would take a random volume of the encyclopedia with me to bed, open to a random page, and use that for my reading before sleep.

I guess I have a bigger beef personally with MS since I've spent a good part of my career cleaning up their messes. At least the technical ones. So I had a big victory today. I have been applying for income assistance with my provincial government. I was hesitant because I had tried it once before many years ago and it was such a dehumanizing experience that I couldn't continue past the first orientation meeting. They were more concerned with catching people trying to defraud the government than they were helping anyone. But a friend of mine that has been helping me get my life together pushed me into it.
Yesterday I had an assessment over the phone that lasted an hour. Yes, I hate the phone too, so this was nerve-wracking. But due to my situation they said that since I didn't have a diagnosis for anything (I told them I was autistic, ADHD, and suffering from burnout), that unless I could get a doctor's note right away saying I can't work, that I'll be denied. I don't have a family doctor so the woman told me to just walk into a clinic and do it.
Now I thought that it was over because I didn't think I could convince a doctor that I couldn't work for these reasons in one visit any more than I could convince this woman. But I went in today, waited in the waiting room anxiously, and then told the doctor my situation. I barely had to explain anything, just that I was applying for income assistance, needed a note saying I couldn't work, and when he asked the reason, I told him that I was pursuing a diagnosis for ADHD, autism, and burnout. He said ok, I can give you three months.

And that was it. I got the letter. Didn't even charge me for it. 🎉
Now this doesn't automatically mean that I'll get the income assistance, but my odds sure look a lot better. I've met all the terms this woman laid out for me. I guess we'll see... 🤞 In any case, while I'm still exhausted from this whole mess, my mood is sure a lot brighter now. 😊

Thanks for asking! What you describe is an almost amusing (if it weren't so terrible) perversion of real characteristics of Technocracy. The idea is a threat to the powers that be and thus has come under attack in many ways, slander and libel being popular ones. Although to be fair, I suppose that what you read/heard was just a wildly bad interpretation from someone who hadn't looked at the idea too closely. 🤷
To clarify, the US, Canada, and Mexico are all supposed to join together voluntarily. It's not a dictatorship, quite the opposite in fact. The new country needs to be completely self-sufficient in terms of resources, but not isolationist. Not only would self-sufficiency allow us to no longer need to interfere in the affairs of other nations, we would be in a position to offer genuine help where it was needed, no strings attached.
Other countries from Central and South America were to be invited mostly for maximum protection, but that was more of a suggestion during wartimes.
Lastly, there would be no expelling of "foreigners" because Technocracy does not discriminate against anyone, by race, sex, religion, orientation, etc. simply because there is no scientific basis to do so. The only scientific way to define a "foreigner" would be to expel *all* humans from the continent, regardless of race or origin.

It's not the size that's the big problem, it's the inefficiency. Our current system is so inefficient that it would be hard to make it more so if we tried. So many industries are operating at 25%, 10%, and even less efficiency, meaning that we can reduce our effect on the environment by 4, 10, or even 20 times without lowering the overall production levels. This would be just like "reducing the size" of the technosphere in terms of impact on the environment, but without the corresponding reduction in overall standard of living.
And the current system has been trying to make things more inefficient, it requires it in order to keep going, to keep the money flowing. Because it is essentially on life support, having already collapsed nearly a century ago. It is essentially an environment destroying machine--you already know this---but it's the inefficiency that's the problem.
So there is a lot of room for making things much more efficient. If you take the time to read through Technocracy's research, you'll find just how wasteful we are, how much we can do away with and make better, and still operate a high-technology society where every citizen can enjoy a high standard of living and all without doing damage to the environment. The worst case scenario in trying would be that it simply cannot be done, but we will have still so greatly reduced the damage we are going that we will have a lot more time to come up with something else before the whole thing collapses, which will in turn save countless lives.
But if it does work, and I think there is good reason to think that it will, the gains to society will be immense. You already know what at least some of those will be.

That's simply not true. Science is a tool, and like any tool can be used for good or ill. It has been other ideologies that have misused it for their own, destructive ends. Those same ideologies have a vested interest in turning the public against science because it threatens their control over people. These anti-science stances are playing right into their hands.
And that's just the most conservative interpretation. Personally, I believe that with what science has taught us, we can not only live in harmony with nature, but it also teaches us how to be good to each other as well. Only science can save us.

That is what largely what Technocracy is all about. It's a system entirely designed by science, which is our best understanding of nature and how it works. It's a system that emphasizes scientific progress, because good science acknowledges its limitations so we should learn all we can with it so we can be even more in accordance with nature's laws. And one of its primary design parameters is to be sustainable, so that human society can live in harmony with our natural environment, instead of simply exploiting it for gain like our current society does.

It's entirely possible that the window for making this possible has already closed, but there will need to be a thorough study done to prove if this is true or not, one comparable to the one performed by the people who invented Technocracy in the first place (the study was called the Energy Survey of North America). Until then, I think that we have to assume that it is still possible. The efficiencies that Technocracy's design can achieve can solve a lot of the waste of our current society. But we can't afford to wait too long, because our chances are diminishing all the time. We have to work as hard as we can right now.

Basically what the study of memetics has been doing for a while now. Ideas can "infect" people just like viruses, and the most successful ones spread like successful viruses. Everyone has an intellectual immune system that helps limit this spread, but it can vary a lot. The best inoculation against harmful ideas is critical thinking, but there are ideas that can suppress the spread of this just like an autoimmune disease (anti-science, anti-critical thinking, etc.). These can be the most dangerous as they can allow the spreading of ideas that help spread things like real disease (like anti-vax ideas).
That's why critical thinking is one of the core subjects in my OSES project, which is designed to teach people how and why they should do this. We can even use the study of memetics to help "spread" this idea to the greatest number of people. One can think of it like learning 'intellectual self-defence'.

I just had to look up "vibe coding". OMG.
All LLMs do is tell 'beautiful lies". This gets some people into trouble because they think that they are having a real relationship. But this shows me that it's gone beyond that. These managers are falling for the beautiful lies, and now they are getting into our infrastructure. They're like a mind-virus that has hopped from human brain to machine, and it's spreading like an epidemic. We need to find a way to inoculate people and build up the herd immunity fast.

There's a webcomic called Order of the Stick about D&D characters that regularly talk about XP, going up levels, etc. The best of course was when the party needed a big diamond for something, so the thief character crawled out of the page, went to her own bio webpage on the same site, and 'stole' a diamond from her bio pic. After that her bio pic didn't have a diamond anymore.
As for video games, Metal Gear Solid did stuff like this, such as when one character you are fighting can easily block all your moves because he can 'read your thoughts'. The trick is to plug your controller in the other slot, then he finds that he can no longer read your mind. 😆

As an autistic person, I found this quote perplexing and somewhat appalling, but then I remembered how non-autistic people communicate, so it makes sense now. The model I've seen goes like this:
In any communication, non-autistic people prioritize in this order: social context, then emotional context, then information. Whereas autistic people typically prioritize: information, emotional context, social context.
So when a non-autistic person posts about a problem, and then is given unsolicited advice, they look at the social aspect of the advice first, and say something like the above quote. They must establish the social context of the relationship before proceeding to any actual problem solving, assuming they are even open to it.
However when an autistic person posts about a problem, and another autistic person sees that, that person will likely go into "problem solving mode", and if they come up with an answer, they share it, because they want to help. If the poster finds that it will help, they are grateful. If not, they will simply say why it won't work. Then the process continues back and forth until either a solution is found, or the responder no longer can come up with an answer. Thanks for trying though. There is no power or hierarchy established, implied, or assumed. It's just information. And if the original poster simply wants to rant and not receive advice, often they will say that from the onset, and other autists typically respect it. If they fail to mention it right away, they can respond to advice back by saying thanks, but I just needed to rant.
This just seems natural to us. Doing it the other way just sounds exhausting.
But then you get situations where a non-autistic person posts a problem, and an autistic person replies to it. The poster gets mad at them, calls them "a reply guy", accuses them of things like trying to establish a power hierarchy over them. When really all that person wanted to do was help, so that can be pretty hurtful and confusing. It's called the Double Empathy Problem. The two neurotypes have different ways of communicating that don't come naturally to the other. But awareness of this fact can help reduce conflict and hurt feelings. I hope that I have helped by mentioning it. But I will now instinctively brace myself for angry replies thanks to past experiences, like most autistic people. 😶‍🌫️

So there's this idea that some of us subscribe to that some types of neurodivergent people served some sort of evolutionary purpose. My theory goes like this: Neurotypical people are very flexible when growing up. By that I mean that they can be taught anything, raised to believe anything. This is one of the evolutionary advantages of human beings. By being open to any new information like this, humans can more easily assimilate and pass down new information learned, and in this way civilization develops. Other animals don't really do this, or if they do, not nearly as much. So it's not just our intelligence that sets us apart from other animals, it's that our brains rely less on pre-programmed instinct and more on general learning. (Yes, there is still some instinct in there, just less than other animals.) And as the human matures, that adaptability to learn new information withers, for from an evolutionary standpoint, if what they learned was counterproductive enough, it would surely shorten their lifespan and their ability to pass along that information.
But this particular trait has a failing, and that is that since we can learn anything, that means that what we learn might be erroneous. This is where we get a lot of the early religions, legends, and mythologies that people believe just as much as they believe anything else. Much of it is harmless, or at least not very harmful to one's own tribe. But if it is, it can threaten the survivability of the tribe.
This is where I hypothesize that neurodiversity, and in particular autism, comes in. Autistic people are not quite as flexible growing up. We have more focused interests that can hamper our abilities in other areas yes, but there is also our apparent predilection for logic and reason. There is also our inherent resistance to simply accepting things we are taught, as well as one against conforming for social reasons. Given this, I think that our evolutionary role was as a defence against problematic beliefs, ones so dangerous that they threatened the survival of the whole tribe. Unfortunately I don't know enough about anthropology to support this with historical examples, but it does fit with what I know about psychology.
One of the reasons I bring this up isn't just to tell people about this theory. It's because I happened upon a very interesting thing that I thought resonated with it surprisingly well, along with an amusing coincidence. It's just fiction, so it's only purpose is amusement, but I wanted to share it anyway. It just needed the previous explanation for context.
I've included a portion of a page from a tabletop role playing game called Cybergeneration. You don't need to know anything about the game to understand this except that it is science fiction, and that it was written in the 1990s. It is never explained exactly who it is that is speaking these lines, but there are many implications elsewhere in the game that it is artificial intelligences (real, general AI, not the sad LLMs we have in real life). That being said, I could picture this dialogue happening between two autistic people. The fact that autistic people sometimes are described as acting or talking like computers only strengthens that connection. And the fact that I rediscovered this passage this year is what makes it the really amusing part.

Just trying out this automatic altbot thing. Apparently when you follow altbot, it follows you back and automatically generates alt-text for any image you post that doesn't have it. Some days I just don't have the mental energy (what many people call 'spoons') to write one up, so instead I just end up not posting the picture. Which is unfortunate because there are a lot that I planned on sharing. Hopefully this will help.
Anyway, let's see how it does.

I get that. I think that I can handle crowds in some circumstances because I was one of those kids that used to hang around in shopping malls with friends (ok, usually just one, but it was enough). That and being #ActuallyADHD as well probably helps.

Technocracy has nothing to do with what Musk and American politicians are doing today. In a Technate, there would be no businesses, no money even, and no politicians. There would be no Musks or Trumps. Ans they didn't want to "annex" Canada snd Mexico, they'd be invited to join so that the Technate would be more self-sufficient with reasources.
Technocracy is not an oligarchy, it would be the most free society in human history, and our best defence against oligarchy, fascism, and any kind of dictatorship.

I liked the geek references in BBT, but there was too much insulting style humor in it to keep my attention. Didn't watch YS. Haven't heard of High Potential (can't use initials for that one!). My favorite along these lines was Scorpion. Had its own issues, but excellent plots and characters.

Yeah, it does take a fair bit to figure them out. And even with all I know it doesn't help me all the time. So heuristics like "trust but verify" are indeed useful.

Yes and no. I'm actually pretty good at figuring people out, on account of being super sensitive and psychology being a special interest, but is not my default mode; I have to have that program active at the time. Otherwise yes, I just rely on what is said.

Whoa, just had a thought: There are many reasons why Harry Potter is popular, but I just thought of one that may resonate with neurodivergent people in particular.
Child grows up in a world that doesn't understand him and generally treats him very poorly. Then he is told by other people that the reason for this is because he is different, he is special. Now I get that pretty much everyone wants to feel special, but for us NDs, maybe it's something different.
We watch this child go to a place where everyone, despite their many differences, are just like him in a very important way. They understand him, and share and indulge his interests. But most importantly, he receives support from a huge community of people based on this difference from the "normals". He feels at home, and he thrives.
Idk, I just woke up so maybe I'm missing something and this is just the universal appeal after all, nothing special for NDs. I guess we'll see. Let me know what you think.

This is pretty much me as well. I even say that I've developed an allergy to advertising since I don't listen to the radio, haven't watched broadcast tv in decades, and use ad blockers. The smiling faces, the catchy jingles, the silly skits, the all-too-familiar tropes, all just give me an almost physical reaction of revulsion when I do encounter them. The more that I learn about psychology and critical thinking, the more transparent their manipulation becomes and the more sickening it is. I feel bad for other people who don't know how to protect themselves.
My dream is for all advertising being banned, and people can get their product and service information from a single, unbiased knowledge base. Perhaps you can subscribe to alerts about types of products, new developments and whatnot. That'd be fine too, just all opt-in.

Trying out this #introduction thing (finally).
Unemployed computer tech and aspiring novelist. Came to Mastodon because of the #foss and #fediverse thing, as I'm quite fond of open standards and non-corporate media (and well, anything really). I wasn't quite sure how to use it since I had never touched xitter, and didn't get the whole micro-blogging thing. I was always more of a forums/Reddit kind of person (I'm on Lemmy now instead BTW). But I found this place to be a great source of information, support, and community regarding autism and #NeuroDiversity since I am a late-self-realized #actuallyautistic and #ActuallyADHD (a.k.a. #AuDHD ) Turns out that "neurodiversity" has been a "special interest" of mine for a long time, before I even knew the word for it. So I spend a lot of time here, probably more than I should. 😛
I'm also working on several projects that I guess can only be collectively referred to as "social benefit" projects. I'll talk about those occasionally and even asking for help, because they are big projects that will need many people and I don't work so well by myself.
And I'm also one of those progressive, lefty, pinko, equal rights, social justice, digital freedom, privacy advocating, LGBT+ ally type people. I grew up on Star Trek ok? They debated whether a cloud of gas or a big rock was actually a person or not. Makes the crap we have to deal with right now IRL seem pretty stupid.
So if you like talking about that kind of stuff, or any of my copious other SpIns (many of which are in my profile), I'm game.

Huh. Hadn't heard of this, but I think that I kind of already do this. When I go to sleep, most often I try to imagine characters I play in role-playing games, either being in different places, or getting into different situations, all just to experience being in different places or situations (not to mention being someone else). So maybe it does work... 🤔
