If the election stuff isn’t taken care of then this country is cooked. I mean, it’s probably cooked anyway, but it seemed like this thing with Trump held things off a little longer. I voted for Trump. I don’t regret it. I still support him. I can sympathize with his position of trying to solve all the challenges of this country which is more than any one person can handle. It’s frankly amazing all the things he’s able to do. I need my 7 hours of sleep a night and periodic downtime throughout the day. He’s practically a machine. At the end of the day, though, we all need to figure out how we can support the values that this country was founded on and do what we can to help return this country to something worth keeping. I try to educate my kids as best I can about right and wrong, pitfalls and rewards in life, going the extra mile, etc.
As far as the deep state goes, you’ll never eliminate them. They’re a bunch of chameleons. Half the deep state became MAGA at 12 Noon on Jan 20, 2025. They’re just trying to lay low to get past this “speed bump”. Plenty of the deep state and sympathizers still exist in the government, and I believe in Trump’s own cabinet. I don’t know. Politics didn’t interest me until the last 10 years, and interest probably is a word I shouldn’t use, but I do like to have the perception of knowing a little bit of what’s going on geopolitically.
But then I think maybe this is all part of God’s plan for us. It seems like God isn’t a part of many peoples lives and maybe this is part of the wake up call. With all the election stealing in 2020 and even more stealing in 2024, how did Trump win? I think maybe a little bit of help from God. I try to look at all this as what is God trying to teach us.
Maybe this AI stuff is meant to distract us all while the systematic dismantling of this country is happening out of view. My wife, earlier this afternoon after I was telling her some stuff about AI, said me to not let AI take the place of God. I didn’t tell her that I started my day with my conversation with God and then listened to some more Fr. Mike Catechism in a Year all before she woke up. She’s really fired up about AI and basically only sees death, doom, and gloom from it. I said to her earlier today to think of AI as a computer program that is a manager of a very large next generation database, but I also understand where she’s coming from. You’re going to get out of it what goes into it and if what goes into it are a bunch untruths and fakery then that’s what comes out the other end. I’m cautiously optimistic about AI. I kind of have to be because I’m in the server management, software development, and cybersecurity fields and would like to keep my job.

As one coworker of mine said, “Coding is fun again.” I do have to agree. We’re still coding in a sense, but it’s more of being a manager of the final outcome rather than doing the nitty gritty work. Let the AI worry about the little mundane details.

We do have the tools to train models and create our own. Maybe we need a decentralized solution where we can all take small chunks of work and train a model then piece it together in the end.
I’m interested in toying with expanding the knowledge of existing models, for instance updating the training of a smaller model and update Rust knowledge to current.
But I suppose you’re talking about additional options and features available that might not be available in the open-source world.
How could we create an open-source AI system? Self-host it for free, or pay us a monthly fee to use the system in the cloud.

If you’re interested in trains, there was a derailment in Toledo, Oregon a couple weeks ago on a train bridge over a river, and someone came out to do a nice narration and shoot some great footage of the derailment. This is only the first video in the series.. there are two others.
Then it turns out the same rail line had another derailment a week and a half or so later, but in a different spot. There’s another video of some great footage of the derailment and rerailing of the engines and cars.
You’ll have to find the follow-on videos, but they should all be linked to the first one here.

I’m certifiably paranoid. A psychologist or someone like that told me so after being asked a bunch of questions. Initially, I was really annoyed at the diagnosis. But, soon after I decided that being paranoid isn’t a bad thing and then I wore that like a badge of honor. The question becomes am I too paranoid or not? She didn’t get into that.

I fired up Ollama this weekend for the first time. So far, I’ve run two models; phi4 and qwen3-coder-next on my MacBook Pro M4 Pro with 48 GB RAM. Phi4 was very quick and responsive. Qwen3 consumed all my RAM and the system was about 25 GB into swap. Surprisingly, while a bit sluggish, it kept going alright.
I also tried both models on a Proxmox cluster I run at work. None of the members have a GPU worth anything, but 3 of the 5 members have 768 GB RAM so I fired up a Linux container running Ubuntu 24.04 and gave it 384 GB RAM. The member I ran it on has 48 hyperthreaded cores (shows as 96 cores) on it. Ollama is smart enough to pay attention to NUMA boundaries so it ran everything on the same CPU socket which was 48 cores including the hyperthreaded cores. While it maxed out usage of cores on the one socket while responding to my prompts, it wasn’t unbearable to use. Phi4 was definitely faster of the two, and it was almost as fast as the same model running on my MBP which had the advantage of GPU. Qwen3 was definitely slower, but it wasn’t like I couldn’t use it.
It’s by no means a Claude Sonnet replacement, but if I can take something like Phi4 and update its training with more recent info, this might be a decent model to run in-house for coding tasks, or other administrative things.
It’s a fascinating time to be alive.

Claude is pretty good. My employer pays for it, but at the $20/mo level. It’s been useful at figuring plenty of things out and making new projects start quickly. It’s not perfect, but that’s ok.

A decentralized web will be essential in the future, and it’s probably not even all that far away with laws like these already in existence. I had heard about these laws recently on the Security Now podcast.
Many people use VPNs to hide from their ISP, but maybe part of the solution is to use a VPN to your home so you always appear to be coming from there and not trigger stupid things like this. Of course, this cat and mouse game will only work so long.

100%. I’ve come around to the position that making things easier on our kids is only setting them up for failure. Trial and adversity is what makes for experienced people who more likely turn into wise people and even interesting people. Staying in the safe lane and having many or most things provided for without having to work for them doesn’t help anyone grow as a person.

I feel like understanding the interviews that @nprofile…hkyy did with @nprofile…0vex and using those as talking points through explanation might be a better way to go toward orange pilling people. From an outsiders view, I think most people don’t know what to believe, and more importantly, they know something feels wrong but don’t know what or why. Shilling Bitcoin is not going to be received particularly graciously by the vast majority of these people. It probably seems to them like unwanted hot stock advice from your broke uncle with a history of making poor choices, and if that’s how it’s received then those people are going to be hard to reach.
I think (I’m tired and my thoughts aren’t forming very well) that we need an education campaign in a way that’s more likely to be received. Tuttle Twins had an episode about Bitcoin, but it just touched the surface. We need a fun but fact based educational series, probably in video form, that touches on the problem (monetary manipulation and debasement leading to more and more people being unable to get ahead) and provides some solutions. Everyone knows about gold, but how many people know about Bitcoin? Most have heard of Bitcoin, but many (or most) see it as “magic Internet money.” What problems does Bitcoin solve? How is it better than what we have now with fiat? I don’t think most people see fiat as a problem. What about the price volatility? Some people view Bitcoin as a get rich quick scheme. These kinds of things, and many more. need to be addressed to educate people why Bitcoin is the hardest money out there and what benefits a hard money brings.
I didn’t mention the tools to onboard and transact with Bitcoin. Things need to get easier for the average Joe or Jane use Bitcoin. We have the advantage of having been in this space for a while and a desire to learn. My wife, for instance, doesn’t really understand Bitcoin. She doesn’t even really care all that much. She listens to me talk about it. Occasionally she’ll ask questions. She’s a great woman and smart, but this is not her wheelhouse, and she feels like she needs to have a masters degree in finance just to understand it. I’m afraid she’s indicative of many people. How can we educate people about the real problems that Bitcoin solves in a way that will help them realize that we’re all getting screwed by the fiat system, explain the solutions, and how do we move forward?
There’s plenty more I could write, but I’m spent for tonight. My eyes closed a couple time while writing this. I apologize if this post seems like I was smoking a little too much of the good stuff and things are all over the place.

If any of you paid attention to Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 space probes entering interstellar space, the description of that tells me the heliosphere is basically a cellular wall in the same way that our bodies and everything around us are made up of cells. It makes sense (to me, at least). Viewing something under a microscope shows all sorts of things and movements and such. What if we go the other direction and look at space through a macroscope instead? It stands to reason that this heliosphere that that sun creates to protect us against extreme radiation and other unsavory things can be viewed as a cell wall. I think what we can see today with all our fancy telescopes are just adjacent cells. If we were able to zoom out enough to see the collection of all those cells, we might find out that we’re a part of something much larger. Something whose size and scale we are unable to comprehend because we can’t see enough of this thing we’re part of. It’s as if we’re looking too close. Just like fractals repeat more or less infinitely, maybe what we have on earth just repeats both larger and smaller than we’re able to see.

I noticed a similar thing with some of the people that I follow where posts dried up. Trying to keep people here is, I think, a chicken and the egg problem. There needs to be a sufficient group of engaged people here in order for new people looking for where next to spend their energy to choose here and stay here. This problem isn’t unique to Nostr.

My wife just went to ALDI for a few things. Their shelves are picked bare of many things. We’re expecting 6-12” of snow. It’s not usual to get snow here in northern Ohio and we’re well equipped to deal with it so I’m not sure why everybody freaked out. I think many people only hear “freezing rain leading to wide spread power outages for a week” and then go nuts with the panic buying. We’re 500 miles away from the freezing rain areas.

I don’t want to seem disinterested in the health and wellbeing of my fellow bitcoiner, but if the hash rate falls and the network difficultly drops, that’s better for me. :-). Been playing on HF much of the day (FT8) and relatively quickly the10m and 12m bands went silent. 15m is still going. Then I find out there’s a severe geomagnetic storm hitting earth right now. That’ll do it.
The upside is it looks like a good chance of seeing the northern lights over the northern half of the US tonight. If the storm gets worse potentially most of the US maybe be able see the northern lights tonight in places where it’s rare to see them.

I’ve been drinking raw milk for years. Still here. No missing limbs. No strange diseases. I didn’t even get sick when many around me were getting flu symptoms and out of service for days. Not saying raw milk is solely responsible for that but it’s one thing that I believe helps keep me healthy.

Some of them do seem to be a little dull and apparently don’t realize that laws apply to all of us, not just some version of laws that change based on if you perceive the feds as friends or foes.
