I read this essay before we had children. That was over 25 years ago. My kids, besides my oldest son who went to kindergarten and 1st grade, never went to compulsory school as a result. He's 26 now. The others 16 and 13.

Thank you for sharing your story. I appreciate it. I have watched clips of people forest bathing. It looks refreshing. I wouldn't be afraid to try it. Can't be any crazier than the daily cold showers I take. Or the ice and snow I lay on to exercise and look up at the moon and stars. I don't think I could ever step foot in a gym again. Much rather workout in the elements. 🥶

GM. It's 8AM. Everyone still asleep. A day off from the mail trail. Space to write, read, and think.
Before I got the morning fire going I went outside, threw a few alfalfa flakes to the animals and hooked the battery charger up to one of my spare mail vehicles.
It's cloudy. Flakes seem to be falling here and there. A chickadee sings in the distance. It seems springy. Not sure though. It's only 16 out there. We're finally above zero again. I can hear a bluejay calling outside as I write this.
I work 5 to 6 days a week. Usually it's Tuesday through Saturday. I have been doing this for close the 3 years. I never imagined I would be. Back in my early 20's I made up my mind I wanted nothing to do with a career. Back then I was a logger living with my grandparents. Late adolescence. If you buy the theory that your one until your 25.
I'm 51 now. Still trying to figure things out. I rely heavily on books and podcasts for ideas. Mostly podcasts now because I spend most of my waking hours in a jeep delivering mail and packages to my community. I feel lucky to say that. No one covers more ground in my community than I do. And I get paid for it.
By the time it gets to the end of the work week things feel scarce to me. There's not enough of anything. I used to get this way in my early 20's while I was logging and saving money to get ahead.
Being older I have learned over the years to stand back and allow this to unfold. In other words, there's more to the story. I am not those feelings. I am having them. In my early 20's I didn't know how to deal with it. It would freak me out.
Back then the feelings caused me to search harder and deeper. I didn't want to be on medications or end up in a nuthouse. I knew I wanted a family, but how could I feeling depressed and anxious a lot of the time?
This was the early to mid 90's. So Prozac was big and such. Depression as a clinical condition was marketed heavy and there were pills to cure it. It could've had something to do with how I was feeling. We never really know. That's why I am sitting writing this close to 30 years later. Or actually it's writing itself.
Like I said, by the end of the work week this wants to be let out.
The book that blew me away at the time, and I've always kept at the forefront of my mind was Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn. It's part of a trilogy of teaching novels.
The main character in the novel is a gorilla. He speaks to a disgruntled child of the 60's telepathically. The gorilla speaks for the Community of Life. In other words, the nonhuman world.
And here I was going out in the nonhuman world daily with a chainsaw making a living . . . and a mess! As you can imagine.
What Quinn taught me about that world is that it was governed by laws put in place by something competent. Call it God, the gods, or whatever you would like. It doesn't matter. The laws, or to say it scientifically mechanisms, are in place. Think of gravity. It's a force we abide by and adapt to.
Yet, unlike gravity, the human heart is activated when we talk about the Community of Life. There's spotted fawns out there in May. Chicks in nests frantically calling for their parents to bring them food. Black bears sound asleep underground in winter.
In short, I fell in love with that community after reading Quinn. Or I got deeply interested. But don't we do that when we fall in love? We want to know!
I would like to tell you I was healed in one reading and live happily ever after. Anyone who has been through any kind of emotional hangup knows it's always there in the background. It more of a falling away.
The deeper I tried to understand his teachings the better I felt. I also felt more alone. No one around me was thinking about this. There's bills to pay and such.
So in a lot of ways the depressions and anxiety were a gift. In order to lift I had to understand the Community of Life.
I remember telling a friend in high school that I was moving up north to live with my grandparents and log with my grandpa and uncle. His response: "There's nothing up there."
He's done well for himself financially. I'm happy for him. Sometimes, especially now in the second half of life when it's getting harder physically to work, I wish that I would've focused more on a career. Yet something tells me everything was as it should be. I had to experience the woods the way I did. There's different ways of being in the woods.
I will get to that some other time.
I got my day to day to tend to now.

GM. It's -5 out there. I leave for the mail trail in a half hour. Feeling rested.
The moon and stars were out last night. I layed in the snow and looked at them while I did stomach crunches.
The lines from Rumi above remind me of the algorithms on social media and such. They serve us all kinds of wines. Some are filled with urgency to act now! I've drank them. . . and regretted it. The hard part is to judge like a king. When you fall off the horse you get back on though.
There's something reassuring to know they were dealing with similar wines 800 years ago.

I deliver mail in rural Northwest Wisconsin 5 days a week.
I listen to a lot of BTC podcasts.
This was my favorite last week.
My takeaway:
Home mortgages exist to make sure you are employed and pay your taxes to the government.
That's why they make you fill out a mountain of paperwork to make sure your gainfully employed.
They'll loan you fiat for cheap, but they're gonna make damn sure you're paying your taxes.
To say it another way, the process is there to strengthen the fiat money system.
Design is destiny.
Perhaps the current mortgage system is designed to keep you on the hamster wheel.
To keep things as they are.

Your post really resonated with me. I struggle with the same issues.
What came up for me while reading was the idea that we are two natured beings.
One side pursues the things of this world. And we are subject to the forces of money, sex, and time. You can tell a lot about a person by what they do with those.
The other side is concerned with the Eternal. Some call it the Soul. Depth psychology calls it the Self. It seems like when I neglect this part of me time escapes me faster.
At 51 I am still learning.

It's - 18 out there at sunrise. I looked at the forecast. They're saying it's supposed to hit 8 today. Anything without a minus in front it is a positive at this point.
This is the 5th day of extreme cold.
Yesterday Hayden (16 yrs. old) and I were out starting vehicles. Had to hook the battery charger up to two of them. There wasn't enough juice to turn them over.
I have to keep 3 vehicles operable for the mail route. I never know what I will run into with high mileage vehicles while starting and stopping over 400 times a day on a route that's just over 100 miles.
Speaking of the mail route. I had a customer bake me a fresh apple pie last week. I have been running boxes up the long driveway to her house for close to a week. I don't have to. Her and her husband got a spot out at the end of their driveway for me to put the packages,
Yet, a few months back, when there were leaves on the trees, he said that he was still recovering from a stroke he had a few years prior.
The cool thing about it is they're also my neighbors. I get to hear stories from people that live close to me. These people are only a couple miles away. The advantage, I think, of living on the mail route I deliver.
It's time turn my attention to my family who is now awake. I hope you have a great day.

From the mail trail yesterday. Standing atop a culvert the Bean Brook flows through. It's usually open in front of the culvert (bottom of the picture). The current is fairly strong. But not after 35 below the evening before.
I might stop by here every day I'm on the route and photograph it. It would be interesting to see the daily changes. I drive over this culvert every day.

GM. I'm in front of morning fire106. It is -22 out there. It's supposed to hit 1 above today. Pretty sure It will be the first time since Thursday that we will be above zero during the day.
It's a day off from the mail trail today. Tomorrow too. I am thankful for it. I get to be home with my family and pets. Being out in the cold all day the past 5 days has tired me out.
I noticed the waxing moon in the southwestern sky last evening. That was at 11 PM. When I went to fill my mom's outdoor wood boiler.
I also filled a tote and small garbage can full of potting soil last evening. Annie has been planting seeds the past month for another season of Bean Brook Nursery. This will be our fourth.

GM. 6AM. It's -22 on my thermometer. I went for a run in it last night. Noticed the waxing moon low in the southwestern sky.
The wind blew strong out of the north. That was betweenr 7 and 8 AM. Afterwards I added oil to my mail jeep. In a matter of minutes the cold burned my gloveless hands.
It's going to be an interesting day on the mail trail. It's supposed to stay way below zero today. Nothing I haven't been through before in my 17 years of mail delivery. But there's still the unknowns. . . . breakdowns and such.

It's 1 degree out there. A fine snow gently falls. The mail jeep is warming up. They're saying it's going to hit 50 below tonight. We're gearing up for that.
Last night I layed in the snow and looked up at the faint stars. It was during my workout. I was down to a T-shirt. I watched my breath rise into the air through the light of my headlamp. It was the highlight of my day. It could be July and I think I would feel the same. There is a sameness to it no matter the season.
Off to the mail trail.

GM. I was out delivering until 7 last evening. It was a 12 hour day. Days after holidays are always tough.
A father and son came in and fixed a toilet at the Post Office yesterday. I met the son years ago at Spring Lake boat landing. 8 years ago maybe. He was in his early teens. Homeschooled. He wasn't shy. Smart. Witty.
As he passed by me yesterday he said, "I have never seen so many boxes in one place."
I don't know if he recognized me or not. I am also their mailman. Doesn't matter. I thought his outsideer perspective was interesting.

My first ice bath. I have been taking cold showers first thing every morning for the past 4 years. This was of course colder being immersed in ice water.
I stayed in way too long for my first time. Roughly 15 minutes with a few minute break in the middle. Immersing my arms made it colder.
Afterwards it took me an hour to warm up. I stood in 90 degree sun with a towel wrapped around me and shivered. I didn't think I was ever going to warm up.
When I do it again it will only be 2 to 3 minutes to start out.

Good morning from the front of morning fire 100. It is 10 below out there at 8:30 AM.
Three things I am thankful for.
A warm bed. I woke up at 4:15 'AM. I layed there for 2 hours because it was warm. And because I could. I'm usually out of bed by 4:15 on a workday.
I am thankful that my mom and Grandma are still alive. They live down the road from us. 4 miles to the east. I was there at 11 PM last night loading her outdoor wood boiler. I do it every evening. Sometimes I will step into the garage and say thank you to my Dad. The garage is pretty much the same since he passed 4 years ago. Maybe he's out there somewhere listening.
Finally for the pets that are casually lying here. A cat in his cushion bed. A dachshund on my lap. They put me at ease.
What's one thing you're thankful for today? I'll zap it 10 SATs. ⚡

GM. It's Sunday. A day from the mail trail. That's one thing I am thankful for. I have tomorrow off, too.
I am thankful for this fire in front of me. It's one above out there. And they're talking cold all week. Some days it won't get above zero they're saying.
The last thing is the dinner we had last night. Annie made chili. Daniel came up to spend the night. It was nice he could join us. He was going to spend the night in the woods survival camping, but a few things went sideways.. After dinner they watched some Lord of The Rings and I went to bed.

I need more grace
than I thought. ~ Rumi
Thankful for three things again this morning.
1 For my job. It gives me purpose. Keeps the bills paid.
2. The freedom to homeschool. To have my wife and kids at home and happy.
3. Bitcoin. For what it has taught me about money, myself, and how we fear change.
That's all. I'm off to the mall trail in 20 minutes. It's 13 out there with a light blanket of fresh snow on the ground. I stepped in it barefoot when I set the ash bucket on the deck earlier. I have been laying in it in the evenings while doing stomach crunches. I never regret doing this. Something about the cold.
Tomorrow is a day off. Monday too. We drive up to McGregor, Minnesota Monday to get a leg vice for Hayden (16 years old). It's for forging metal. It's got a leg on it. So it transfer the blows of the hammer into the ground. That's the way I look at it anyway.
