The Capanna Regina Margherita on Punta Gnifetti, at 4.554 meters, 14,941 ft, on Monte Rosa, has a uniquely Italian history. It is not only the highest refuge in Europe, but also a place rich in anecdotes.
Built by the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) in 1889 to provide shelter for mountaineers and facilitate scientific studies, it was prefabricated in the valley and transported to the summit by mule and shoulder. The original construction cost exactly 17,094 lire and 55 cents.
The inauguration took place on August 18, 1893, in the presence of Queen Margherita of Savoy, a great mountain enthusiast, who spent the night there with her entourage after a climb on foot.
Since its inception, the hut has been an international laboratory. In 1903, it was declared an "International Institute" for scientific utility. In addition to hosting mountaineers, it is a research center of excellence for the study of human physiology in hypoxic conditions, and for meteorological monitoring, climate change, and glaciology.
With 70 beds, a bar-restaurant, a high-altitude library, and Wi-Fi, it is managed by the Polytechnic University of Turin and is famous among hikers for serving what is called the "highest pizza in Europe," cooked directly in the hut's ovens.
The current structure is a modern reconstruction from 1980, which replaced the original wooden hut.

There is public laundry in Sicily which looks absolutely stunning.
It was built in 1514 AD, in a small seaside town in Sicily called Cefalù, over a similar structure which was destroyed in order to redesign hydraulics and redirect soapy waters straight into sea.
It has individual vats for soaping and scrubbing cloths, and large, communal ones for rinsing, where water flows through twenty-two cast-iron mouths most of which are shaped like lion heads.
Town was inhabited by original Greek-speaking Christians following Byzantine faith, plus Arab Muslims and French speaking Normans following Roman church.
Wash-house is built below street level, and there is a sign at entrance saying that “river” comes from an underground source of sweet water which has been known since ancient times. Locals call river Cefalino, and believe it was generated by tears of a nymph who regretted sentencing her disloyal lover to death. Something else sign says is that washing area was used predominately during Arab-Norman era, meaning that original layout was built when Cefalù was part of Emirate of Sicily, an Islamic kingdom that ruled island between 831-1090 CE.
Emirate was part of a large dynasty of emirs called Aghlabids, who ended up controlling coastal regions of today’s eastern Algeria, Tunisia, and western Libya, what was called Ifriqiya plus whole of Corsica, Sicily, Calabria, and Puglia. They initiated land reforms which encouraged smallholdings and enhanced productivity, improved irrigation systems, introduced oranges, lemons, pistachio, and sugarcane, and made Palermo their capital, which rose in size to become one of largest European cities of time, second only to Córdoba and Constantinople.

"Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and a Stoic philosopher.
He was the last of the rulers known as the Five Good Emperors, and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace and stability for the Roman Empire lasting from 27 BC to 180 AD.
He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161.
Marcus Aurelius was born during the reign of Hadrian to the emperor's nephew, the praetor Marcus Annius Verus, and the heiress Domitia Calvilla. His father died when he was three, and his mother and grandfather raised him.

Indonesia has officially ended elephant rides nationwide and it’s a huge win for animal welfare and ethical tourism.
In a binding move, the Indonesian government ordered all conservation centers and tourist facilities to stop elephant riding and shift to observation-only, cruelty-free experiences. Any place that ignores the order risks losing its operating license.
The directive, issued in late 2025, came after years of pressure from animal welfare groups exposing the suffering behind elephant rides. Painful training, restricted movement, and long-term physical and mental harm are all part of the industry experts have condemned for decades.
By January 25, 2026, even Mason Elephant Park in Bali one of the last to offer rides shut the practice down and began transitioning to ethical tourism.

Perhaps the most useful handgun to have in preparation for the SHTF is the Glock 17. With a magazine capacity of 17 rounds, you also carry almost twice the amount of ammunition as some other handguns, which is useful since its 9mm round doesn’t have the highest stopping power out there.
This weapon is the most widely used handgun by law enforcement all around the world. Not only does this mean the weapon is extremely reliable, it also means it is readily available should you ever need replacement parts or extra ammunition.
5. Colt M1911
The 1911 is an all-around winner when it comes to pistols. With a slim profile that still has all the stopping power of a .45 round, this handgun is a good choice because of its durability and availability. A tried and true weapon since World War I, this handgun will serve you well as your personal sidearm in any survival situation.
6. Smith and Wesson 586
No good handgun list would be complete without a tried and true revolver. The Smith and Wesson 586 is one of the most reliable revolvers available. Extremely easy to load and to clean, the Smith and Wesson 586 is the perfect survivalist pistol. Its only disadvantage is its ammunition capacity (6 or 7 rounds).
However, the revolver more than makes up for this by being versatile. The Smith and Wesson 586 can fire both .357 and .38 special rounds, making finding ammunition for the weapon easier.
Shotguns
Last but certainly not least, the shotgun is an important part of the survival arsenal. Most game can be hunted with one, and nothing says “don’t mess with me” like a shotgun.
The only reason this list didn’t rank its value above that of the rifle’s is for the weight of its ammunition and its limited range. Still, for versatility, you can’t beat a good scattergun. Here are three great options when the SHTF.
7. Mossberg 500 12 Gauge
Easy to use and easy to maintain, the Mossberg 500 easily makes the top of the list for survival shotguns. While it is made in 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and .410 bore variants, the 12 gauge is the most popular and allows the most customization.

It was built in neo-Gothic style between 1911 and 1912 near Gaspra, on a cliff overlooking the sea (40 meters high) and is the work of the Russian architect Leonid Sherwood.
The castle dominates the cape of Ai-Todor on the Black Sea and stands a short distance from the ruins of the Roman camp of Charax.

On this day in 1977, the Steely Dan LP “The Royal Scam” re-entered the UK Albums Chart at #52 (February 5)
Originally released in 1976, Steely Dan’s fifth album did best in New Zealand, where it peaked at #3, also going to #11 in the UK, #14 in the Netherlands, #15 in the US, #24 in Canada, and #30 in Australia.
The lead single and opening track on the album, "Kid Charlemagne", was loosely inspired by the rise and fall of the San Francisco-based LSD chemist Owsley Stanley, and Larry Carlton's guitar solo on the song was ranked #80 in a 2008 list of the 100 greatest guitar solos by Rolling Stone.
“It’s my claim to fame,” Carlton told Guitar World in 1981.
“I did maybe two hours worth of solos that we didn’t keep. Then I played the first half of the intro, which they loved, so they kept that.
I punched in for the second half. So it was done in two parts and the solo that fades out in the end was done in one pass.”
The song “Everything You Did" (3rd track on side 2), features the lyric: "Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening."
Eagles legend Glenn Frey offered his ideas on the lyric, saying: "Apparently, Walter Becker's girlfriend loved the Eagles, and she played them all the time. I think it drove him nuts.
So, the story goes that they were having a fight one day and that was the genesis of the line."
Later in 1976, in a nod back to Steely Dan for the free publicity, and inspired by the group's lyrical style, the Eagles included the line: "They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast", in their hit song "Hotel California".
Frey explained: "We just wanted to allude to Steely Dan rather than mentioning them outright, so 'Dan' got changed to 'knives', which is still, you know, a penile metaphor."
The two bands shared a manager (Irving Azoff) and Timothy B. Schmit, who sang backing vocals on The Royal Scam, joined the Eagles in 1977.
There’s the usual collection of excellent musicians contributing, including Steely Dan founder Denny Dias, who guests on guitar, while the raft of backup vocalists includes the likes of Michael McDonald and Venetta Fields.
The album’s cover was meant as a satirical take on the "American Dream".
Artist Larry Zox originally created the painting of the skyscraper/beast hybrids for an unreleased Van Morrison album, and designer Ed Caraeff suggested superimposing a photograph of a sleeping vagrant taken by Charlie Ganse to make the cover for “The Royal Scam”.
In the liner notes for the 1999 remastered reissue of the album, Fagen and Becker jokingly called it "the most hideous album cover of the seventies, bar none (excepting perhaps Can't Buy a Thrill)." 😁

"Antisthenes (born c. 445 BC—died c. 365) was a Greek philosopher, of Athens, who was a disciple of Socrates and is considered the founder of the Cynic school of philosophy, though Diogenes of Sinope often is given that credit.
Antisthenes was born into a wealthy family, and the philosophical ideas that he developed had their roots in the contradictions and injustices that he found embedded in society. He sought to build a foundation of ideas that would serve as a guiding principle toward a happier, more thoughtful way of life.
Antisthenes believed that happiness was dependent on moral virtue and that virtue could be instilled through teaching.
In teaching people how to be virtuous, Antisthenes demarcated two categories of objects: (1) external goods, embracing such elements as personal property, sensual pleasure, and other luxuries; and (2) internal goods, including the truth and knowledge of the soul.
He advocated great restraint on the part of an individual tempted to take pleasure in external goods, and he encouraged his students to accept the burden of physical and mental pain that accompanies the soul’s search for its own inner wealth.
To dramatize his method of teaching, Antisthenes, after the myth of Hercules, would stand on his platform of ideas and beliefs and “bark” at the folly and injustices of his society.

From Italy to England: The journey of a new way of thinking:
The Renaissance did not begin as a sudden revolution. It began as a change of mind, a quiet shift in how people looked at life, knowledge, art and themselves. The word Renaissance itself means “rebirth” and what was reborn was classical learning, human curiosity and individual thought.
To understand how the Renaissance started we must first understand why it began in Italy and then how it slowly travelled to England.

Italy was not a single country during the late Middle Ages. It was divided into wealthy city-states such as Florence, Venice, Milan and Rome. These cities created the perfect environment for intellectual rebirth.

On this day in 1977, Boston’s self-titled LP debuted on the UK Albums Chart at #35 (February 5)
Here’s the remarkable story of how it happened…
In the late 1960s, Tom Scholz began attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he began writing music.
While attending MIT, he joined the band Freehold, where he met guitarist Barry Goudreau and drummer Jim Masdea, who would later become members of Boston.
After graduating with a master's degree, he then began working for the Polaroid Corporation in the product development division.
With the money he earned from his job at Polaroid, Scholz designed and built his own recording studio in an apartment basement on School St, in Watertown, Massachusetts in the early 1970s, primarily using devices he invented himself.
The basement was described by Scholz as a "tiny little space next to the furnace in this hideous pine-paneled basement of my apartment house, and it flooded from time to time with God knows what."
Scholz began recording demos in his home studio while working at Polaroid, working for hours on end, often re-recording, erasing and discarding tapes in an effort to create "a perfect song".
By that time, Scholz, Goudreau, and Masdea were playing in the band Mother’s Milk when they auditioned a lead vocalist called Brad Delp, a former factory worker at a Danvers electric coil company, who spent much of his weekends singing in cover bands.
By 1973, Scholz had a six-song demo tape ready for mailing, and he and his wife Cindy sent copies to every record company they could find.
The songs on the demo were "More Than a Feeling", "Peace of Mind", "Rock & Roll Band", "Something About You", "San Francisco Day" (later changed and renamed "Hitch a Ride") and "Love" (later changed to "Don't Be Afraid").
They received rejection slips from several labels - RCA, Capitol, Atlantic and Elektra among the most notable - and Epic Records rejected the tape flatly with a "very insulting letter" signed by company head Lennie Petze that opined the band "offered nothing new".
He spent years unsuccessfully submitting demos to record companies…
Eventually Epic reconsidered, contacted Scholz and offered a contract that first required the group to perform in a showcase for CBS representatives, as the label were worried that the "band" was in reality a "mad genius at work in a basement".
In November 1975, the group performed for the executives in a Boston warehouse that doubled as Aerosmith's practice facility, and as a result, Mother's Milk was signed by CBS Records one month later in a contract that required 10 albums over six years.
For their first album, Epic wanted a studio version that sounded identical to the demo tape, but Scholz decided he could not work in a production studio, having adapted to home recording for several years, stating "I work[ed] alone, and that was it."
Scholz took a leave of absence from Polaroid, and was gone for several months to record the band's album. "I would wake up every day and go downstairs and start playing," he recalled.
John Boylan came onboard as producer, and it was him that suggested the band change their name to Boston.
Boylan's own hands-on involvement would center on recording the vocals and mixing, and he took the rest of the band out to the West Coast, where they recorded "Let Me Take You Home Tonight".
“It was a decoy," recalled Scholz, who recorded the bulk of the album back home in Watertown without CBS's knowledge.
Scholz recorded such tracks as "More Than a Feeling" in his basement with a $100 Yamaha acoustic guitar.
That spring, Boylan returned to Watertown to hear the tracks, on which Scholz had recut drums and other percussion and keyboard parts.
He then hired a remote truck from Providence, Rhode Island to come to Watertown, where it ran a snake through the basement window of Scholz's home to transfer his tracks to a 3M-79 2-inch 24-track deck.
The entire recording was completed in the basement, save for Delp's vocals, which were recorded at Capitol Studios.
Scholz wrote or cowrote every song on the first album (with the exception of "Let Me Take You Home Tonight," written by Delp), played virtually all of the instruments and recorded and engineered all the tracks.
The entire album was recorded for a cost of a few thousand dollars, a paltry amount in an industry accustomed to spending hundreds of thousands on a single recording.
The album was released in 1976 and became the biggest-selling debut album by any artist up to that time, and the single "More Than a Feeling" has become a rock classic.
Chart-wise, the album peaked at #3 in the US and Switzerland, #4 in Germany, #7 in Canada, #11 in the UK and the Netherlands, #16 in Australia and Sweden, #24 in Japan, and #26 in New Zealand.
The album's other singles, “Peace of Mind" and "Foreplay/Long Time", also went on to become Top 40 hits, and radio staples.
The album is now the second best-selling debut album of all time in the United States, after Guns N' Roses's “Appetite for Destruction”, and it is the joint eighth best-selling album in US history.
The album was also ranked #43 on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "Definitive 200" list.
