Thanks for sharing your learnings! Right now there are couple of public federations that people can use, and we're working to make it technically simple & cost-effective for anyone to set up their own federation.
Ultimately, we want to give users the option to either use public federations or run their own. Preferences will vary, and every model has its trade-offs, but there is strength in numbers.

It sounds like you're envisioning a "federation of federations," which isn't technically possible. A federation is akin to a multi-sig where each guardian node holds one key. It's possible for each server to be run by a larger org vs an individual, but each would still be a single entity.

Fedi is separate & distinct from the federations on our platform, so we're not sure if Freedom One's guardians will come back online / into consensus or resolve their Gateway issue.
Our suggestion would be to keep an eye on Fedimint Observer & the in-app status indicators. If/when you see these resolve, you can try to send your funds to another wallet at that point.

Thanks for flagging! After reviewing https://observer.fedimint.org/, it seems 3/4 guardians are online, but even these are out of consensus with the block height - leaving the mint in a degraded state.
Being out of block height consensus should only affect on-chain transactions, but to your point LN transactions are still failing - so the issue is likely with their Lightning Gateway.

Thanks Cody, Freedom One does seem to be back up & running. You can check out Fedimint Observer (https://observer.fedimint.org/) for information on existing public federations. We are also consistently working to add greater transparency within the app, with online/offline status indicators coming soon.

Thanks so much for sharing this honest feedback Bryan! Your points are valid and they are definitely not lost on us.
We believe the underlying technology is there and very powerful - but we understand it’s not yet simple and easy to use.
This creates an accessibility barrier that requires significant UX improvement to overcome so that Fedimint can scale.
We & others are working tirelessly on this in an effort to make the freedom protocols that Fedi is built on universally accessible.
