Last Notes npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros I'm that guy, but a bit older than the picture. Have a full set.of recorded lectures here: https://youtube.com/@edilmedeiros I'm also working on putting my lecture notes in written, but this will take a few more months. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Serious education exists. For devs programs, search for Vinteum, Chaincode Labs, Btrust Builders, Bitshala, Liberia de Satoshi. How to get funded is one of the things we talk in the programs. Also, I have a regular Bitcoin course for CS and engineering programs at the Univ. of Brasília and I'm helping update the MIT course. So, for your question of how to survive, we have undergrads that went straight to a bitcoin grant or job, we have guys that saved from their 9 to 5 job and used that to finance themselves until they've built enough proof of work to get funded, and we have guys that do as a side job while they build enough proof of work to quit. Could be better, but funding is out there and tends to improve. It just is not actively advertising as in a regular company. Once you build a track record of smaller contributions, you'll find a way to reach a decent grant. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Now we convince @nprofile…zxag to come 💪 npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Maybe we can convince @nprofile…dkuq to let me repeat it at @npub1dwa…7c52 Florianopolis in February? I think it will be the Exploit edition, have to think what could be said in that regard. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Mint, Melt, Repeat: Interactive E-cash for Bitcoiners at @npub17yq…5269 Explained the basic crypto behind modern E-cash and the Cashu protocol proposed by @nprofile…969u. I fast coded a cashu wallet in stage, but you can check a more structured material at https://github.com/edilmedeiros/cashu-workshop Feedback and PRs are super welcome to make this the best introductory cashu workshop/workbook. https://blossom.primal.net/408c6ba95b2332522f49598b3ac016ae279a738b06f863a5d764141a5b100f2a.jpg npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros @nprofile…y33v is a truly transformative organization and @nprofile…dm9k is an amazing partner. I'm not exaggerating when I say we are building the best educational programs and materials of the bitcoin space. Thanks for inspiring me to do my best work and to inspire brilliant minds to join the Vinteum community. #nevent1q…yvud npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Vibe coding is the cheap Chinese plastic gadget factory of the digital world. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros The more I see people talking on the internet, the more convinced I get that explaining is a talent, not only a skill. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Bitdevs Porto Alegre essa semana! https://www.meetup.com/porto-alegre-bitdevs/events/307916782/ npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros https://blossom.primal.net/7c483e988976d5c790aceee8f46c3869fcce24ec924ced27e6645af5ef869d6e.jpg npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Have been using Ghostty for some time, quite happy with it. Used iTerm before. iTerm seem to interact better with emacs on the terminal, but I switched back to the gui version. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Wow, that's cool info. Are you working on scavenging the bitcoin history? npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Well, you have been in this space as a serious contributors for way longer, maybe I'll evolve to that direction too. Think out loud, I agree that decentralized consensus and it's mechanics are the genius bits that tie everything together. I'm interacting to a lot of people in two contexts. First, with engineering and cs students at the University. Second, with devs attending the educational program we run in Brazil. In both contexts, I feel all of them can't grasp a conceptual view of consensus and how it influences the various parts of the protocol. My hypothesis is that they don't understand that the transactions establish a language in which we talk about transfer of ownership. Personal evidence (from this small universe of interactions) is that they keep using analogies and metaphors to talk about consensus, even when called to talk about it terms of the transactions (which are the fundamental messages we are propagating and validating). Thanks for sharing your view (and please do more) in this discussion and feel free to comment, disagree and provoke in the repo of the project. Developing a university course in the open doesn't seem common, I wanted to experiment with that too. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros I'm more inclined to say that Part 3 is the most important (transaction semantics) for other protocols development and that's what's on my mind right now. Part 5 would be the foundation of consensus. Thinking out loud, maybe I'm taking consensus for granted during the previous parts. In the overview of Part 1, I plan to explain all the mechanics, including distributed consensus, but without going into the details. Indeed, I feel it didn't work well last year. Maybe I should consider a lecture dedicated to consensus. Thanks. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Sim. Ano passado falei disso na parte de cripto e senti que a turma boiou. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Would you take a Bitcoin protocol course with the following lecture plan? Very excited to finally have found some time to pursue this. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros I'm officially turning the recordings of my Bitcoin course lectures (in Portuguese: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfdR3_dt2rbexb-ohbaLLzAuNAp7Ypt8u) into a coherent set of lecture notes. This is a work in progress and will be developed at: https://github.com/edilmedeiros/bitcoin-course npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros The case for Bitcoin is not inflation. It is probably the only thing you will be able to truly possess. It's a case for private property. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros You have a chain for that… npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Nunca imaginei ser convidado para qualquer podcast, quanto mais o da BIPA com o mestre Caio Leta que acompanho com frequência. That's the expected value of one satoshi in a future where bitcoin is as omnipresent as the internet. The screen price tells you nothing about the true value of Bitcoin. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Try to use your brain instead of trying to be right. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Great talk with @npub1z5u…5lwd today at @npub1ze9…3pxq about bitcoin initiatives at universities. As I say, this is the institutionalization era of Bitcoin and it will be done when universities start to formally teach Bitcoin courses and programs. Ella is driving it from the students side, I'm pushing it from the inside. Let's see what future reserves us. https://m.primal.net/LxjN.jpg npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros It's happening! https://m.primal.net/LwOE.jpg npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Sunday reading https://m.primal.net/LrXU.jpg npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Next week I'm attending @npub1ze9…3pxq to talk about the gap between Bitcoin and the Academia. They say that to change academia is like moving a graveyard: you can't count with their inhabitants. This is true in so many aspects. Yet, I believe both communities could benefit from more interaction. For academia, Bitcoin is a huge source of problems in the frontier of knowledge that require strong science. Also, it's an opportunity for working on real-world projects that will impact the lives of millions for good. Contributing to open source is an obvious way of returning the humongous investment all countries make in higher education in a meaningful way. On the Bitcoin side, having some of the smartest brains around has the potential to accelerate the pace of innovation and security in many protocols. This is not to say that Bitcoin needs the academic community, quite the contrary. If we, scholars, don't get out of the ivory tower and embrace the self-organizingethos of Bitcoin and related technologies, we will be obliterated by reality. #note1ct4…puck npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros He's also on nostr: @npub1uu8…hr2k npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Same here. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Thinking about building a team of students at the University to make a proof of concept with that idea. Maybe we could do something together one day. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Imagine an obsidian vault backed by nostr, maybe with optional encryption and a way to selectively unencrypt selected notes to share with others. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros "Wallet distribution" probably works well to convey to the general public the idea of funds dynamics that you seem to be heading to. "Address distribution" is probably more technically correct, but does it speak well to your intended audience (without having to explain too much)? Thought of "Balance distribution" (which I personally like) or "Funds distribution", those might work too. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Nice work, BTW. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros That's what I imagined. The expression "wallet distribution" got me confused that somehow you could estimate that too. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros 2, Primal and Damus. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Suppose I have 15 addresses generated from a single seed and they all received 0.1 BTC. You don't know all the addresses are mine. Do they count as 15 shrimps or as a crab on the chart? npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Congrats! npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Valeu! npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Vai ter Bitcoin na universidade pública. BTW, você pode assistir às minhas aulas no YouTube: https://youtube.com/@edilmedeiros?si=HGAVqLEjRi72MmlH https://m.primal.net/LdKk.jpg npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Never npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros São Paulo is nice, Satsconf is great. I recommend you also consider btc++ in Florianópolis next year, one of the best cities in Brazil to chill out in the beaches. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros One of the main drawbacks of building a trustless network is that people naively come to believe that trust is a bad thing. Bitcoin is trustless in a very strict sense, of not requiring an authority to clear transactions. Yet, you (probably) still trust: 1. ECC is not broken and will not break in the foreseeable future. 2. SHA256 and Ripemd160 will not break either. 3. The node software you run is not compromised. 4. The wallet you use is not compromised. 5. The OS you run is not compromised. 6. The many pieces of hardware you use are not compromised. 7. Your connection to other nodes is not compromised. Most of all, you trust other people will want to use Bitcoin, otherwise it's worthless and a waste of time. Even Satoshi trusted in the community to keep developing Bitcoin: "I’ve moved on to other things. It’s in good hands with Gavin and everyone." You just can't verify everything yourself, you have to start from somewhere and built upon. Don't be a trustless lunatic. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Bitcoin misconception: all nodes maintain a copy of the same blockchain. In reality: most nodes will be able to synchronize to the exact same blockchain, but some won't. E.g. pre-segwit nodes don't see the same data as segwit aware nodes, so they can't maintain the same data. Yet, this won't cause a fork on the network because what matters is not to have the same blockchain. What matters is to agree about the UTXO set state at all times. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros ecash and ecash look acceptable. e-cadh will eventually become ecash just like email once was e-mail. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros @npub1v22…a0z2 what you think? How are translations reviewed, in case of a language you can't understand? npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros What a delight it is to go through Grokking Bitcoin by @npub1g9y…y05t. Any plans to remove miniupnpc as well? npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Última semana de inscrições! #note159s…q4sh npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros It all boils down to people who believe they know what's best for others versus people who just want to be left alone to decide their own matters. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Gold was an excellent money, it can hold value across time and space. But it has a fatal flaw: holding value a cross scale was difficult. Indeed, this is a problem with all physical commodities. If it is highly valuable, small value transactions that constitute the day to day routine of most people are hard to make. If it has low value, large scale transactions suffer and add friction to specialization and economic development. We solved this problem long ago with banks and gold certificates. But it was too easy for governments to corrupt the system and the people lost control of their money. Which is unfortunate, fiat looks convenient for small scale transactions, but it is made a hassle for large scale. It is not transferable across borders, and it doesn't hold value across time. It doesn't work for savers and innovators. It barely works for short term thinking people that conform to the norm. It only works to keep people under control. That's why it won't last forever. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros My most recent paper addresses the excellent book Better Money: Gold, Fiat, Or Bitcoin?, by Lawrence White. Tl;dr for the bitcoiners around: - you probably don't understand the economic weaknesses of bitcoin, it's not superior to gold in all aspects. Tl;dr for the bitcoin skepticals: - you probably don't understand money enough, it's inferior to gold and bitcoin in virtually all aspects. Unfortunately, what drives adoption of new technology is not technical superiority, but the increasing friction on the incumbent system. For fiat, friction is called inflation. https://doi.org/10.30800/mises.2024.v12.1558 npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Quando eu digo que pra um advogado que ele PRECISA aprender o mínimo sobre o funcionamento da Internet, sempre recebo algum sarcasmo de volta. I'm a professor myself, I know what I'm talking about. But I can't swallow people doubting themselves because of pompous titles. This is how the reporter finishes her article. "In general, I tend to believe that focusing on improving things for the less fortunate is a better way to advance our society than purposely making things worse for those who have more, but what do I know? After all, it’s not like I’m a philosopher or anything." Come on, you see something is wrong and you doubt yourself instead of questioning it? That's how a dear colleague is trying to argue against my position that Bitcoin can become money someday. A debit card is just a messaging system, a kind of voucher that is redeemable for the underlying currency, which is Reais or Dollars, or any modern fiat. There existed this kind of stuff during the gold standard (not electronic, but in actual paper and in balance sheets) and it is estimated that it was more prevalent than barter and gold itself, coins being reserved for transactions with strangers, and bank notes for distant fairs and for large transactions. I highly disagree that Bitcoin is a debit card, but I'm curious about the rationale behind this position. Bitcoin is a messaging system in its core, just like a debit or credit card system, indeed. But it is not debit from someone else like in a debit (or credit) card system, it is the asset itself and the underlying "physical" phenomenon associated with this asset is being able to send new messages in this system. Yes, it looks like fiat in the sense it's not redeemable for an underlying commodity, but it is intrinsically different from fiat for it is an entitlement for sending messages in a real system that (some) people decided (in the market) to value. Lawrence White, in Better Money, argues that the difference in nature between fiat and Bitcoin is government coercion. I understand there's more to it. You may argue that Bitcoin is not money since it is not widely accepted as a medium of exchange. I'll agree with that. But for something to become money, it has to not be money before (like gold, silver, and fiat). Also, there's no accepted theory for how something becomes money. So, we may be witnessing the monetization of this thing (or not, who knows?). I'm betting in the monetization of this thing for more than economic reasons. I may be wrong, time will tell. --- You can see the discussion on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/edilmedeiros_new-paper-coming-out-soon-this-time-an-activity-7239438107782074368-4Noi npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Hoje teve live no Bitcoinheiros em que falamos mais sobre o Bitcoin Dev Launchpad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgOnckZ7-Ok npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Vejo que tu link ou uma carteira lightning também 👏 A UX de todos os apps é meio complicada, mas parei no @npub12vk…pugg que parece ser o mais bem acabado. While I’m preparing a proper academic review, maybe someone will appreciate some of the book’s main points. - Strong historical material explaining different implementations of money. - Quite basic supply-and-demand methodology for comparing gold, fiat, and Bitcoin. Yet, the common ground makes for a conscientious analysis, especially for pointing that Bitcoin’s purchasing power volatility is inherent to the system from an economic perspective. Take aways: 1. “A gold standard has the advantage that the global stock supply curve for monetary gold is non-vertical in the short run and nearly horizontal in the long run, providing responses in the quantity that stabilize the purchasing power of gold, but the disadvantage that the supply curve can occasionally shift.” 2. “A fiat standard has the potential advantage that its supply can be deliberately managed to stabilize the price level both in the short run and in the long run, but the disadvantage that has seldom been managed that way in practice, due to the incentives that accompany government control over the quantity of money.” 3. “A Bitcoin standard has the advantage that the Bitcoin supply curve does not shift, but the disadvantage that the supply curve is vertical in both the short run and the long run, implying unstable purchasing power in the face of money demand variations.” White is skeptical about a Bitcoin standard because of purchasing power volatility. He argues that people preferred stable monies over time and that the costs associated are high. “My prediction is that BTC is unlikely to become a commonly used medium of exchange for the same reason, namely that its purchasing-power risk and transaction costs make it unattractive to use as a medium of exchange.” My main critique: fiat money was created by governments (White explains the mechanics of this movement) and they have a higher cost over society in the form of inflation (as he argues with historical evidence). It was done because of political reasons, not economical. I would not overlook people coming to accept higher purchasing power volatility of an eventual Bitcoin standard if governments stay in the last century’s track of increasingly assault over the institution of private property. Does it worth reading? Definitely, it will expand your knowledge about monetary systems and understand some fair critiques about Bitcoin. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Today was Chest day 💪 npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Do 100 push-ups count? Bitcoin hodlers do. The payment is hidden by the more apparent appreciation in price when compared to the unit of account (e.g., dollars), but nonetheless real. By contrast to a world in which block rewards are zero, and so miners receive only fees, block rewards expand the pool of BTC in circulation, diluting the purchasing power of each existing BTC unit (holding real demand constant). npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Unfortunately, this will get worse ☹️ npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros I would like to remember that the technologically incompetent decisions we are witnessing in Brazil come from the same court that manages our election system. npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros ☹️ npub1uu8sdgm7geznwnaxhfgqs5wp6slhpm8tsdy6u852v72jawyk0faqc3hr2k edilmedeiros Politics under a democracy involve a curious psychology.
