It's churn. The problem with getting more than 1% of bitcoiners using nostr is that a huge chunk of these potential users have already churned through nostr. The nostr churn rate is insanely high, for non-bitcoiners, but for bitcoiners too. A big chunk of the bitcoin community on X has given it a kick of the tires. Zooming out, hundreds of thousands of bitcoiners may have churned through already. So now you have to get them all back a second time, or a third time, it's almost impossible, usually you only get one shot with this, they don't come back for a second kick of the tires.

Bitcoin is killing nostr by making it unmarketable. The 99.x% churn rate is because of bitcoin more than any other factor. Newcomers are like "oh this is a bitcoin thing" and then they leave. Because they're not bitcoin people and never will be.

Nostr JSON is extremely complicated, in wide angle. Devs often have comically little understanding of how the world looks to non devs, it's become a meme, and you're proving out the meme a little here.
Just to understand what a signature is, that a very big thing to normies. Try explain how public key cryptography works to someone who's never every consider what it is and what it does. And then explain what a hash is after that.
Without that it's a just a meaningless little markup file.
Devs will often give up and say "okay all you need to know is it's a kind of digital signature" and other mush that just makes it worse and not better, since cryptographic signatures are not at all analogous to real-world signatures, and since cryptographic keys are also not at all analogous to real world keys. And anyway keys don't even sign things in the real world, keys open things.

Like if a 6s clip goes viral and gets 100k views that's say 2 or 3 TB served, and in a sort period of time. (Proving transcoding of proven video is another issue I'm curious how you'd tackle). I agree with you the proving part is a bit wobbly in terms of messaging, but not so much for the fact the app was heavily vibed. More because the max-proof certification relies absolutely on Apple and Google's servers. You could easily call that an advertisement for the benefits of centralisation.

The problem for me is the scale of the subsidies. As far as I can tell, it's over $1m per month going in, perhaps well over. And for a user based with under 10k daily actives (going by npub.world). That's $100 per daily active per month, or thereabouts.
If it was a little bit of help here and there then I'd be fine with it, but this is something else entirely, these are Saudi Arabia ratios.
I think small businesses running clients for profit is fine and good, just as it's fine and good to have small businesses running bakeries and bars. One good thing about nostr is that it potentially enables small businesses to take part in an industry previously reserved for corporations. But like any small business they still have to function as *actual business* for the whole thing to work. That hasn't been proven out.

You could argue that I suppose, but then who is doing the subsidising? For a real town square it's still the townspeople paying, it's still their tax contributions. For nostr the current user base is not covering any significant part of the costs of providing what it is consuming, in any way, roundabout or direct. The whole thing is run on a Deus ex machina plot device.
If you're not paying for your use then you are the product, always and forever. At the moment most people on nostr are not paying for their use and therefore ARE the product. The only question is to whom are they selling themselves.
The answer is they are selling themselves to a relatively small group of people looking to make a certain mark on the world, to leave a certain legacy. If enough in this small group give up this quest (this can be a mercurial sphere) then they will be left with nobody to sell themselves to.

This assumes everyone is Kanye. The vast majority of people who do delete a post on X, their posts were never screenshotted, often never even read. Perhaps they just felt embarrassed after a few minutes of cooling down, or noticed a grammar error, or wanted to rephrase things. And even for posts that have been up for a while, often it's just them tidying up, and again, nobody will have cared to screenshot those posts before they deleted them.

If you sold your bitcoin earlier in the year, bought silver, and then the other day sold your silver and bought back bitcoin then now you've got much MORE BITCOIN than if you'd just held.
Same as if you had 100 bitcoin ten years ago, sold them all and bought ETH, then today, ten years later, sold your ETH and bought back bitcoin, you'd have MORE (lots, lots more).

I’ve heard a lot of this “in theory nostr will scale horizontally forever” but, having worked in gaming with hundreds of thousands of concurrents this is the equivalent of “in theory if all the cars start moving right when the light turns green then there won’t be a delay for the cars further back”. Yeah in theory that's true.
Put another way, relying on “naturally occurring” load balancing is about as ambitious as doing away with airplane tickets and just having everyone come to the airport to try to board planes like they’re public busses.
Relays will only scale horizontally in mythical-world conditions that will never happen in the actual world. This is a mythical world where everyone and their sister is running a relay (an impossible relay:user ratio), where everyone adds just the right combination of relays so when one is maxed out vertically it falls back to another that isn’t maxed out (and that isn’t everyone else’s fallback), where high-horsepower relays (whatever distributed SQL monsters) just happen to be scattered around to just the very right places, where nothing on nostr requires ultra-low latency (waiting for the straggler relays), where no one single person has a reason to subscribe to events from more than a couple hundred others, and so on.
And that's just the relays, when you get to the blossom servers, CDNs, etc., and then the interplay between the relay side and the media side, it's just blood out of both nostrils.
If you've scaled anything then you can see from a mile away that nostr will not scale. You need centrally-orchestrated load balancing and a hundred other things akin to a human central nervous system.

50 years ago, if you wanted the following:
-1 flight Los Angelus to New York
-1 basic television
-100 large pizzas
-100 litres of coke
You'd have had to work twice as many hours as today. That's certainly not inflation in terms of hours worked. But you could easily make a list of things for which you'd have worked far fewer hours for 50 years ago.
It depends what you value. If you just want to live in a van, watch TV, eat pizza drink coke and fly around the country then you haven't been affected by inflation at all, quite the opposite. But if you want a house in a trendy part of the city then you have been affected a lot.
Inflation only means something in context of hours worked and personal priorities.

In short, this NWS thing was where a so-called “entry node" captures some web traffic, wraps it into an encrypted Nostr event which is then sent to a relay that holds it until an “exit node” fetches it, decrypts the event, sends it to the local web server, and then sends the response back through the relay the same way.
It, err, didn't take off.

There is nothing special in nostr relays is the exact problem. You need something special to scale.
Relays physically cannot scale vertically, even strfry, which I'll be the first agree is tight c++ code, will max out before it supports anything at scale just due to write limits. You'll always hit a write wall on the database, and no code will remove that wall for you.
Relays cannot scale horizontally either (to millions) due to coordination issues, latency issues (especially tail latency), the backplane limit, state bloat quicksand, and also just vertical maxing out of individual relays in the horizontal plane. Again no code will fix this, you're bumping up against hardware and the laws of physics.

Experience at teenly tiny scales tells you nothing about experience at actual scale.
This divine video things is a good example. I quote:

Sometime in the next10 years (or whenever) bitcoin is going to be forked where the fork becomes the new bitcoin, that's for quantum. That’ll once again demonstrate that nothing about bitcoin is “locked in”. It's software that gets updates, that's what it is.
It's not whether you or I would get behind a fork with a different number coins, it's whether such a fork could happen before all the coins are mined. If it could happen, even in circumstances we'd find hard to imagine in 2025, even 50 years from now, then it's just not a hard limit.

Yup. Like Cafelog, it sputtered out but Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little saw the potential, what could be fixed, hard forked it we got WordPress.
Cafelog had all the foundations, real novel stuff. But you needed a bunch of PHP/MySQL skills to boot it up, UI was functional but cluttered and developer-focused, etc. Nostr feels like a modern-day Cafelog. And it's not going to be WordPress without a hard fork.

Maybe, but Threads didn't exist when nostr was formed, and now they have 150m daily actives and 400m monthly actives. These are all people for whom Threads is a new start, so I can't imagine a great U-turn. Same goes for Bluesky.
Mass migrations *have* been happening, Nostr just hasn't be siphoning people off. In all likelihood the way forward for Nostr is a reboot, enough lessons have been learned to launch a new Nostr that doesn't suffer from the things keeping this current Nostr back.

If anything these past 3 years have been a golden period in terms of the outside world doing things that have pushed people to change their online social habits . Many moved platforms, but they ended up on Bluesky, and above all on Threads, which has done incredibly well this year.
Threads has done so well because it's soft, it's light, it's not topical, not "daily". Life is hard-edged as it is. What the biggest crowds were running from, it turned out, was the even harder edge of online life, and over on Threads there they found a lot of pillows and blankets.

Not only churn, but the whole network is shirking, now smaller than 3 years ago. People come, see a bunch of (in their minds) bitcoin crap, leave.
People who are okay with bitcoin stuff stay, but then get bored of the relative nature of it, leave also
Bitcoin is killing nostr.

Palantir when? I considered silver and didn't buy, hence the regret. As for stocks, if I'd have considered Palantir and it did as well as sliver during that time (or better) then I'd regret that too. That goes for whatever else you want to pull from the S&P.

you're being a fool and investing your hard-earned money all in one place based on some weird combination of ideology, friendship and magic-show hypnosis.
this isn't 2009. bitcoin's puberty is over. its teenager height now. lots of things will grow faster than bitcoin in 2026. as happened in 2025. (heck even the S&P 500 grew 20% faster in 2025.) keep some of your money in bitcoin but spread the rest around. trade a little. and cash out back to bitcoin when it makes sense.
humans have been trading since the beginning of time for a reason.

Don't pretend like if you could go back in time 10 years with $1,000 you'd buy Bitcoin and not Ethereum (butterfly effect disabled). Of course you'd buy Ethereum, and then you'd jump back forward in time and sell it for Bitcoin.
And if you had a crystal ball and knew 100% for sure that say, whatever, I dunno, titanium, was going to rise in value versus bitcoin over the next 5 years, you'd sell all your bitcoin and buy titanium.
If not then what are you thinking? That it makes you somehow moral to end up with less bitcoin but to have held it all along?

This just sounds like a religion or morality argument. Look the fact is that somebody who sold their bitcoin bought Ethereum and then sold back for bitcoin has way way way more bitcoin than you now.

I’m looking at Mickey Mouse with his 3500 or whatever bitcoin, and you with your 100 bitcoin, and you’re telling me that somehow you made the right choice because of some arbitrary definition of “savings”?
hate to break it to you but 10 years ago today bitcoin required something of a risk appetite, you can’t retroactively go back and make it some kind of well-known thing like it is today

It's 10 years ago today.
Me, you and Mickey Mouse each have 100 Bitcoin.
You keep yours.
I sell mine and buy Nvida stock.
Mickey sells his and bus Eth.
This morning I sell my Nvidia and buy Bitcoin. Mickey sells his Eth and buys Bitcoin.
Guess what? We both now have more Bitcoin than you. Amazing. What happened?
If bitcoin is ~*good*~ and I have more than you now, then aren't I ~*gooder*~!
Awaiting whatever other technicality you want to fish out of your pocket.
