I get why they call it a "decentralized network" but that description was kind of a turn off for me before I came here because I thought you were trapped in a little server with a few dozen people and what's the point of that?
The power is decentralized but the communication need not be. You can talk to anyone from any community. You can have all of those fun instances of cross pollination when different communities intersect.
The more the fedi grows the better this gets.

Part of healthcare is having someone listen to and understand what is wrong. We focus on the more active parts, but just having someone understand that your arms keep getting numb and care that it's scary is part of what "doing healthcare" means.

That face to face time is social recognition of our importance as members of ... society.
One of the people who has the most education, information and tools that could help with my mom's problem would take the time to think about it, and do their best to help.
Even if the result is the same NOT getting that recognition hurts. It's ominous. I hope most people feel this way and reject it on a gut level.

It would be much more efficient to have everyone cremated and pressed into uniform cubes to be stacked in pit. The AI could summarize their life and display it on a screen as each cube is stacked. Other AI mourners could then play sounds of crying. That way no one would need to miss work and these fools could make more money to... IDK why do they need more money? I've lost the plot here.

There are tasks that even AI could do the task it would miss the point.
For example if IDK... a firefighter dies in the line of duty would it do to have AI read their obituary and lay a flowers on their grave?
I'm trying to pick an example everyone will understand here. The point is we all take off time from work, we all pause because it's a person and they matter... why do these people have us needing to explain these things?

They have similar fantasies about education, and the entry level workers who often start out doing rather simple tasks on their way to being experts.
Their desperation for this to work has made it very hard to tell what if anything the tech can really do.
After all if you could convince people it was "good enough" would it matter if it worked?

If you are a rich person the cost of labor must be so vexing and these people don't just want to be paid to do the work you have for them they want "healthcare" too. Either that's a big expense for you or the government does it and you have to pay more taxes. Horrible!
If only there were a magic free way to make them stop asking for healthcare.
Some of these guys are so desperate for AI to be that thing. After all most doctor's appointments are just people talking to the doctor. Why not AI?

So this is also about libraries. That makes sense.
My CS club students have been discovering the intricacies of working with a server and wanting to do "simple" things like save text to a file.
They made this fun version of the game wordle and wanted to make it so it would post a list of high scores. They made it in javascript and it runs client side.
They didn't know what "client side" and "server side" were but now they do.

This article is a little advanced for me, is the point that not enough languages have written their own methods to interface with assembly?
I know very little about what goes on outside of the IDE. Just some vague notion that "the compiler makes this into assembly" But is it more like the compiler makes it into C and then C makes it into assembly?

I've tried to build things with thermostats and it's just not as easy as one might think... or maybe I didn't know what I was doing.
I kind of like the simplicity of "squeeze for more heat" and it times out after a bit. That way if it's not that cold they just shut off: you won't think to squeeze again. But if it's cold you can squeeze and maybe they get even warmer or stay on longer.
A three or four day battery life would be ideal IMO.
I want tech that is invisible and serves.

There are inexpensive finger-less heated gloves that you can put on while typing or if you are still enough to plug them in.
There are more expensive fingerless ones that have batteries and can be recharged.
I don't know if cold exposure makes arthritis get worse, but I try to keep my hands warm as it runs in my family and I'm a little paranoid.

I just want you to know that my desktop background is this huge folder of ant photos and like half of them are yours. Since I teach CS and math the first thing students see is a big photo of an ant from the photo and since they know they can distract me by asking about ants (but I also think they really like them) they will ask me what ant it is, what it's doing etc.
It's the "Ant of the Day"
Today was Camponotus rectangularis which they thought was "the cutest ant so far"

Does anyone know of a highly durable and reliable clip like this “side release buckle” that is also an electric switch?
I see the wires connecting such a switch as another possible point of failure. So maybe it would be better to not have wires. What about a latch that needs no power source and sends a signal via NFC or something when closed or opened?

Heated gloves are amazing. Soothing to arthritis, they can make bitter cold winter days tolerable.
The main reason I suspect they are not more popular is the annoying matter of keeping them charged. It’s really easy to forget to turn them off.
What if the glove could detect if there was hand present?
* What if they turn off if you clip them together?
* What if you make a fist and squeeze and that turns them on for 5 min?
* How else could they detect when to be on/off?

Yes yes merch HOWEVER.
I think the concept of having a mascot is a much older and deeper thing than we are ready to grapple with. They are like the shamans who dress up like the creatures of the forest and dance. It's not just a US thing and it get re-invented over and over.
People just love to have a guy dressed up as a creature cavorting around to represent them.

There were some slightly larger ants in the past, like Titanomyrma which had queens about the size of a humming bird. But there are also ants about half that size around today.
So no, say... gopher-sized ants. That will have to wait for the future I suppose.

So, what a Haidomyrmex nest like? They might have lived in hollow spaces of plants, or maybe, like army ants they just roamed the early forests terrorizing everyone and sleeping in a pile.
But what really made ants take off and come to dominate ecosystems were their nests. A climate -controlled defensible bunker, and sometimes underground farm.
I don't think we could rule out them using their larvae like weaver ants, but with less dexterity. Or arranging debris as a shelter.

Like most of you I often wonder "why aren't any of the hell ants, Haidomyrmex still around today?"
I have a hypothesis. Haidomyrmex were early wasp-like ants. They could sting and lived in small eusocial colonies. Their remarkable mandibles were designed to grab and carry small insects. What they couldn't do very well probably? Dig. Really the specialized mandibles would make weaving and carton nests difficult to build.
Modern ants tend to have highly versatile mandibles. 1/

This is a kind of subtoot about something that I doubt anyone here knows about and it'd be boring and petty to explain. But I just wish more people understood that if you are doing some obscure thing with a small group of people who care about it you SHOULD promote other people doing the same thing.
It is more likely that "your audience" fades away, because you alone can't keep them invested. But with a network suddenly you are more like a movement.

There are creative communities where everyone promotes each other, bragging about collaborations, letting everyone know who inspired them making it a more exciting space for their fans who could also be fans of other people.
Then there are creative communities where it's really competitive. Sometimes this is down to a few, or even just one or two large players who have the notion that if other people are getting popular doing something similar it's zero sum.

It’s probably a good call. If I see someone like that I try to ask someone “do you know who that is?” (eg. ask some of the checkers guys if it’s summer or maybe the postman in winter)
If I’m not intimidated by the person I say hello to them.
There much less risky was of being nebby— and in the US at least cops are not very helpful or effective at investigating crimes that impact regular people— they are happy to use any noise you make to justify their own ends.

The least these communities should feel owed is help form the companies improving their electrical and water infrastructure. Yes. Demand that they pay more and help build out the big systems they want. Tax them.

These companies will play local governments off of each other using FOMO "well we could go over to Rust Belt county, and then THEY would get the six or seven full time jobs our project represents.
If data centers were things people wanted to live near they wouldn't be looking to build them in economically depressed areas. It only compound the crime that they want to skip out on paying taxes like local small businesses must, and expect concierge service for their massive utility needs.

Often they could build if they wanted, but there is a long tradition of small local governments giving tax breaks, zoning leniency and other gifts to big companies because they think it will "help the economy"
One might be better served by giving such tax breaks to a glue factory, a glue factory would employ more people and not rise the electric bills.
It's not about permission: it's wanting handouts.
No tax breaks. If it's such a booming industry? Why do you need government "help?"

I could see a customer service rep monitoring maybe ten or so such conversations and looking for the right point to move in.
It's also possible the more terse and effective communication of the rep is run through an AI filter to make it "nicer"

I had to talk with a chat from Optimum Online about my internet recently. I think they are using AI, but mixed with a real customer service rep in some bizarre way. Every message is so wordy positive and sycophantic. "Of course I can help you do that right away!" (can you? can you really?)
But, eventually someone made some real changes to my account that I'd HOPE the wouldn't leave to an AI. There were long gaps between each response and I still had to wait 15 to talk to "someone"

My general dislike of AI writing has had a positive impact on how I read and listen to texts and scripts.
If I'm listening to a nature video, for example, and a sentence is empty of meaning or just illogical I turn that video off and avoid whoever made it.
Some of the things I've rejected probably weren't made by AI, but I don't see that as a bad thing.
My main issue with AI texts is I just find them kind of patronizing? You want me to sit and nicely listen but you can be bothered to write?

No, being able to breathe life into a set of directions, knowing what to stress about and what to ignore is a skill. One of a few I hope I can teach my students.

When I was younger I didn't like the idea of doing a craft or project by carefully following directions. Part of this was a normal kind of youthful impatience. But, there was another aspect. I just couldn't imagine anyone being impressed or blown away by something that "anyone" could do by just following a series of steps.
I was *very* wrong about this. I used to get annoyed "well all you have to do is read the directions and follow them it's not like you need to invent anything"

What disturbs me is the total lack of urgency and confidence in these “reporters” as soon as Ben simply describes what they are doing “so you are reporting this person so they will be removed from the country” they put all of the responsibility on him (one caller says “isn’t that what we are doing?)

I'm confident it isn't happening because there are records in every state of who voted. Republicans have not been able to produce these non-citizen voters. If they could find names on voter rolls and then show those names were not citizens those people could be sent to prison. It's a really serious crime.

I know hell ants never lived in our time but I still miss them so much. I wish I could see them hunting, building their nests. Doing ant stuff.

I mean... if we reported on every instance of Steven crime I bet people would start wondering about the millions of normal Stevens.
That's what happened to Florida in a way. For a variety of reasons strange petty crimes were easier to report on if they occurred in Florida. More news stations picked them up since it was "amusing." Now there is this notion that there is something wrong with the "Florida Man."
