They don't play .webm extension files I think. Not sure if it's a codec or the whole container. You have to remux to something like .mov or .mp4 generally
Lots of videos downloaded online are .webm so it's especially retarded.
Apple is real annoying when it comes to codecs and file extensions. For instance, ALAC is basically completely inferior to FLAC audio in compression ratios but you can't import FLACs to the music app. This is a similar story with AAC and Opus. Opus is superior but Apple invested a lot in AAC development so they lock everyone into that.
I hated those iOS days, I'm glad I can just throw opus songs on my android and forget about it.

I still like Cake. I think there's much virtue in having an everything wallet that still takes privacy and security seriously on chains that have basically 0 privacy like Bitcoin. It's one of the only wallets that can generate and recieve Silent Payments on Bitcoin and one of the only wallets that support MWEB on Litecoin.
As for Lightning, it just sucks. You have to assume you have 0 privacy unless you set up your own LND node. Even with LND you still are susceptible to stolen funds from your channel peer and have to monitor the channel or have a watchtower monitor it. Lightning is inherently risky.
As much as I detest LSP wallets and Spark even more so, it's just not possible to have good UX without them unless you go 100% custodial which is even worse. I think this is definitely a blame Bitcoin culture than blame Cake Wallet.
What wallet can you seriously recommend to normies that will be able to do all of the swaps on all of the major chains AND Monero in a good UX with such strong defaults for privacy? Edge wallet sacrifices privacy for better UX and Unstoppable Wallet sacrifices lots of privacy features.
If there was a good alternative for a lightning implementation I would agree but it's literally Spark or custodial right now to recieve lightning offline, so its this or Cake just doesn't offer it. Lightning is a failed project.

Privacy enables permissionless transactions. Look at the capital gains tax on Bitcoin for example. People opt for usurious Bitcoin loans over directly paying in Bitcoin largely to avoid 20% capital gains. Bitcoins transparency and KYC chokepoints makes getting caught for tax evasion a certainty if the user fails to report. Not an issue on Monero.

Lol. I'm extremely familiar with lightning. It is not a scaling instrument as its scale as a self custodial private means of exchange depends on the L1. The fee market determines the minimum force closure cost which affects the minimum safe balance to hold, and also determines how expensive channels are to open. Privacy is extremely network dependent and relies on strong UTXO hygiene and TCP/IP obfuscation above the base protocol.
All that doesn't matter anyway because most use lightning custodially or semi-custodially which beings me back to my original point of inevitable corporate and regulatory capture.

Small blocks and lack of privacy are the two greatest reasons for Bitcoin's now inevitable regulatory and corporate capture. If you can't see it now I don't think you will ever see it.
A cheap, quick and private monetary network will always have advantages to whatever the state creates. A transparent, expensive and slow network will perpetually falter.

For the normie, convenience will always trump intangibilities like money devaluation. We have to backdoor hard money to them via a superior UX. Back in the early days, we didn't have zelle or Venmo so for p2p cash Bitcoin was superior to ACH, wires and credit cards.
Its already a big ask to get people to buy another currency to use. If its slower and more difficult to use, and nobody accepts it, they're not going to bother at all. Adoption and medium of exchange are top priority.

You've fundamentally missed the point here. Vlad is spelling out an inevitable future if fundamental and significant improvements aren't made to L1 and Lightning Bitcoin. You WILL see more TVL on these defi chains and you WILL see more custodial scaling solutions like CEXs and custodial wallets.
It's happening at an exponential rate already, look at the transaction fee chart compared to price, largely stagnant. We saw 0.5 sat/vbyte transactions getting confirmed in the first block. The L1 is getting used less and less. The biggest innovation this year for "adoption" was square terminals acting as a lightning accepting KYC, custodial wallet.
What's your solution? Or do we not even have a problem here?

Remember when you could buy teslas, steam games, Microsoft computers etc with Bitcoin? We've seen a drastic reduction in Bitcoin as a medium of exchange and a huge increase of ETFs, Bitcoin treasury companies, and push for strategic reserves.
It seems to me the order is more akin to medium of exchange - > store of "value" - > complete corporate and regulatory capture.

I've had many similar cases with lightning using my own node. I always felt so nervous whenever trying to send, and especially recieve, funds. Lightning has extreme problems when trying to use it fully self custodially and privately.
Now I just use Phoenix to zap and forget about trying to recieve.
Only time Monero hasn't worked for me was on my own node the other day and its because i2p was experiencing a DDOS and I had my node set to only broadcast via i2p, totally my fault. A default monerod setup virtually never fails.

The value of the Bitcoin network is its utility as medium of exchange. Those use use it solely as a store of this value do so on the backs of those pushing real adoption. If we tell everyone "buy Bitcoin! Buy Bitcoin! Store of value! Number go up!" then people only see it as a useless tech stock. It damages the culture. It also puts off those more skeptical as they never hear about what they can use Bitcoin for, only that they ought to buy to increase their fiat holdings when they sell.

Pondering on this more you make a good case. If Bitcoin is going to fizzle out due to ossification, regulatory capture, etc. Etc. Then these Bitmain sha256 miners would be rendered paperweights except in the case that another sha256 steps up to resolve the issues.
Maybe that's Bitcoin Cash, I just wish it were a privacy by default network. But it's inevitable the money will flow into something sha256.

Really good post, very accurate. I'd push back slightly on the claim that Moneros hash power is the reason it's vulnerable. The real reason is because the energy and compute cost is proportionally lower than Bitcoins due to the smaller market cap. The RandomX hashrate will always be lower than sha256 because it is intentionally less efficient. The real metric is energy expended, cost of hardware, and what devices are the most energy efficient. If market caps are equal, total energy expenditure is roughly equal but Monero has a more decentralized, harder to co-opt mining economy since it consists mainly of gaming PCs and botnets. "One CPU one vote" as Satoshi so famously wrote.
The Bitcoin mining environment is not "professional miners" it's Proof of ASICs in which only large corporations or governments are the only entities that can afford to compete to buy the most Bitmain ASICs due to economies of scale. This resembles a security model closer to Proof of Stake than the pure Proof of Work provided by Monero's RandomX algorithm.
Really this is the only think I can think to push back on though, overall very honest and reasonable take!

Those measures will help against network attacks on a hostile network, but if on a home network your router firewall is really the main network defense. On your computer, permission levels and app isolation is your primary defense and this is where arch has 0 defenses by default.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AppArmor for how to setup AppArmor. Unfortunately you'll find its extremely difficult and laborious to set up a MAC like AppArmor system wide and requires expert level cyber security skills. Debian and Fedora distros have AppArmor or SELinux installed and configured by default respectively. Each package installed through their package managers has profiles built in and you get a very strong degree of security.
The arch security model is basically non existent on the other hand. It treats basic permissions and app isolation as non-default and you basically have to hope every package you install has absolutely no exploits because if anything exploited, each program has extremely high levels of access to your files and permissions.

Yeah golds physicality is both a con and pro. Illiquidity is a big negative.
KYC absolutely does not affect Bitcoin and Monero the same way. With Bitcoin, any on chain movement is public such that the state knows perpetually if you still have your coins or you have moved or sold them and exactly when and how much. This is the case with Roger Ver, despite him moving to a different jurisdiction, the IRS still had full knowledge of his on-chain actions and thus had 100% certainty that he still had his coins and thus he was essentially held hostage until he paid up.
With Monero, after the KYC withdrawal no state agency gets any information on your holdings and movements on-chain. You can say you lost your keys, donated it all, whatever and you would have complete plausible deniability. Combine this with a Veracrypt hidden volume to store your wallet and you have state intelligence proof money.

99% of people do not have $20 million and never will in their life so youre already talking about an exception but I'll entertain it still.
At $5000 an ounce, $20 million is 4,000 ounces. Say if you had only 1 oz Gold Eagle coins, each of these is about the size of a half dollar so really in just a suitcase you could likely hold 4,000 of them at least. Just estimating there but really gold is quite dense so even millions can be held and hidden quite easily.
Idk why you brought up privacy that's a terrible hill to die on while defending Bitcoin.

They do have Monero to Bitcoin but you have to use the maker binary, it's not native in the wallet, which is probably your point. Basicswap DEX has atomic swaps in both directions. Retoswap's highest volume pair is BTC and Monero.
As for them being complementary, yes I agree they are for now. If Bitcoin continues to be the institutional pump coin then the strategy of spend Monero save Bitcoin will likely continue for most.

If the Bitcoin maxi culture is completely shed and ossification culture is shunned then we may finally see protocol level improvements to fungibility and privacy. Where were going it looks to be the opposite, though @nprofile…6el4 is bringing up usage a lot more which is a good sign.
Ultimately I think Bitcoins price will have to crash to get rid of the institutional "adoption" (capture) and number-go-up culture. Then we may truly see a Monero competitor when devs have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Bitcoin has an awesome name and logo, and is already in everyone's mind. Nobody I've met has ever heard of Monero, which is intentional through leaked memos of state intelligence. They intentionally don't mention it, ostensibly to downplay its significance and reduce its network effect.
I hoped that they would have added Monero's upgrades that Satoshi talked about in the early early days. The state would be in big trouble if they had a Monero equivalent coin with all the MoE and privacy upgrades but with Bitcoins market cap and network effect. Actually they'd be screwed which is probably why it's played out like it has.

Lol the importance of darknet market utilization is its the only p2p market in the world that REQUIRES cryptocurrency. It says a lot about the state of Bitcoin that darknet markets were invented exclusively due to Bitcoin and yet have almost completely shifted to Monero despite Bitcoins first mover advantage, stronger network effect, higher liquidity, 20x larger market cap, etc.

Giant centralizing factor using one entity as a universal recipient across merchants. Timing attacks become trivial especially when most users use custodial solutions or LSP solutions. If the first peer knows your transaction (LSP channel) and the last peer knows your transaction (BOLTZ) and state intelligence subpoenas both (you already know they get all that info) then you literally have 0 privacy through simple timing analysis.

This is the main issue with a traceable ledger. Each transaction is known to all by default. The IRS instantly knows about your Bitcoin purchases and will send you a letter about your unreported on-chain movements. Happened to a family member of mine.
This is likely a main reason we see Monero used more. An untraceable chain is safer for both parties.
The buyer doesn't worry about the IRS knowing about their transaction, unless they get a warrant and subpoena the seller. Even in this case, if you don't give identifying information to the seller, there's no prosecution.
The seller doesn't worry about tainted coins, and an influx of legal cases in which they have to hire a lawyer to defend against accusations of money laundering and the like for unknowingly accepting tainted coins.
If you propose lightning, know that most merchants who accept Bitcoin, Monero and Lightning see lightning usage at <2%. I've never seen 3% or greater in any statistic. This is likely due to UX hurdles on both buyer and seller, and that most implementations with easy UX (custodial wallets and low privacy options like SPARK and LSP solutions) are extremely traceable thus bringing us to the original problem.
Monero has almost the same UX as Bitcoin on-chain. Actually easier because you dont have to worry about UTXO hygiene, coinjoins, tainted UTXOs, etc. All you need to keep in mind is not to give the same address to different people which is the bare minimum of Bitcoin privacy.

Yeah I disagree about your claim that humans are more prosperous post industrial revolution. I'm not a materialist so what I value most is spiritual prosperity. Spiritual prosperity is almost directly opposed to material prosperity. You gain spiritual prosperity through submission to God, service to family and community, penance, prayer etc. We find in our post industrial, technological world that these elements are shockingly rare in the average day yet were the focus of the life of say a feudal peasant. I find we are now spiritually destitute, slaves to sin and thus that's how I come to my conclusions.
