Not ignore it, more suggesting a whoopsie can be fixed without hiding the whoopsie. It doesn't need to be displayed, it's just useful to be available. You see whoopsie, I see opportunity for deceit. Beyond that it could allow the community to rely on relays to keep a watch out for this deceit. There is no reason, for example, github releases couldn't have an edit history. You still get the version the dev wants you to get but as the user, I'd get the opportunity to audit why they rug pulled my package.

Just because developers havent messed on the platform yet, they do all the time on github and others it drives me nuts. Ubuntu for example, only offers links publicly to their latest images which will have a different checksum despite the same dl link every weekly. We have hardware/stability issues and ended up keeping our own store of iso images (which is generally recommended) because they change the image url.

1. I mixed up some concerns in my head.
My concerns are that developers can do sneaky things by replacing events on users. Having a chain of versions I can see/store is what I was considering, that way I, the user, can decide which versions I want to run. And/or sneaky patches that alter the release system.
Im concerned knowing that most organizations are going to have their release cycle automated and signing key stored in their devops system, if a safe version was replaced with a malicious version, users platforms might be able to roll back to a previous version, or users as well.
What stops the publisher from replacing all versions at some point in the future, disallowing me from running an old version they had? I understand these are problems will face today, but I think we can fix that with some immutability.

1. Instead of replaceable event's couldn't timestamps or invalidation work? A pointer to the event that's being replaced also be signed? It could make it easier for stolen keys to replace old versions with malware. I understand the asset won't be replaced, but the public pointer with version to the asset will be.
2. Optionally displaying souce only supports http git remotes. You should at least consider a variable format for source code. Signed tarballs or zips are also totally acceptable from FTP sites for example. It might also be worth while to allow sums of source and/or a commit that the package was built from.
3. Are there ways to handle variants of x86 and others for example? I ship packages that require x86-64 v2 and sometimes v3 extensions. You mention it's "loosely based", so I assume it's not a strict set?

Yeah, we don't have root CA trust on client devices. Which, as far as trust goes, I like. It's the steps involved and corps that gatekeep it. But to be fair, someone has to manage those certs and distribute them to clients. Nostr doesn't have that chain of trust, it won't, trust is a centralizing force.

Unless I'm missing something the step from free Letsencrypt certs to small PKI with intermediates is outrageously expensive no? Digicert and Verisign want a few hundred $ per month, and providers only offer managed solutions. What if I want to manage my own intermediate CA bundle? Who sells that at a reasonable price?

13 y/o me was just excited that 100mb ethernet only required 4 conductors. The only other issue is that in the US in the 90s rj11 was only wired with 2 conductors so a little bit of rewiring was necessary.
Anyway. I later found out you can run 2.5gb over coax, with slightly over 1ms of latency that grows to about 3ms at capacity.

I'm not suggesting it doesn't happen, nuance rarely fits well into text discussions and rarely makes enough of a statement to be useful. It doesn't mean nuance doesn't exist however.
If someone is likely to discuss a question with an AI model, I don't think it's the antisocial behavior that needs to be questioned. But more why it's more likely the user might be doing it in the first place. I don't believe these discussion "utopias" can't exist, even smaller than the public square is what I'm suggesting. If I make a note on nostr, it's unlikely anyone but my followers, and those who I interact with the most, will engage with right? I'm suggesting we've tried them. and they all seem to fail? Reddit? Hacker news? Private forums? The smaller and more focused the better.
You can run a business, and form ideas in the open, so long as the constructive conversation is productive and all members have the same regard and respect for the topic. Public-square like platforms make it too cheap to engage, that cant't be changed, that's definitionally gate-keeping. It cost social energy and emotion to engage physically with people, this cost is much higher, for a reason.
I think it's just semantics argument as the limit to cost of engagement approaches zero.

With encryption you typically get two choices, store a key somewhere (physical access) or a password derived key (knowledge).
Physical access can be gained with a warrant or theft.
Knowledge can be obtained or coerced.
Personally, having nothing is the best defense. If your concern is state actors (we can talk about that more in depth) there is very little you can do practically. Both options can be obtained, it's your decision what's more important or likely, based on _your_ threat model.
So that said, it's impractical to have nothing, you have to continue living your life despite these shortcomings. Bitlocker only prevented data on the disk from being read by a different system. Bitlocker usually relies on tpm keys to automatically unlock disks. So if physical access to the machine was available, your data is only as secure as winlogon.
Note that you are asking to protect data at rest. Meaning if your device is physically taken, lost etc.
My minimalist theory
- Keep most stuff on another disk system, portable or a network server.
- Use mklink to map persistent data like %APPDATA% directories externally (server or externally encrypted disk)
- Use an encryption tool that requires some form of authentication to decrypt/activate the disk on startup
- Use scoop (a package manager) to store all of your applications on the other drive. Scoop attempts to redirect app's local storage to it's persist directory.
There is nothing left on the host OS but your user account, some shortcuts, drivers and some basic applications that aren't managed by scoop. And of course system dumps (on crashes), pagefile (swap), and logs. All of which can be redirected off your host disk at the risk of instability (it's really annoying).
The fun part about this method is that you can wipe your OS disk frequently and be up and running in like an hour.
Consider a virtual machine. You could install a simple and stable Linux distro then run your Window box inside a virtual machine depending on your needs. The console is limited, so you wouldn't be playing video games or graphics intensive stuff.
There are other crazy things I've done like using Windows RemoteApps to move nearly all apps across different servers. Playing with tmpfs and virtiofs so when the system is stopped, all persistent data is gone. Fun firewalling, snapshots, backups, overlayfs and on. I've spent a lot of time trying to make Windows better in this regard. Windows Server OS gives you the best chance at success here, if you can tolerate driver issues, and things like cameras or bluetooth not working. It gets really complicated the closer you get to having nothing.
If you're transitioning, unless you think you're getting raided soon, just focus on moving your system over IMO, it's likely not worth any of this hassle. I would agree with the others, veracrypt is likely the most maintianed and stable option, I've played with a few others but none really work.

I mean nostr is main form of socials, but imo it's hardly a constructive place to openly discuss real ideas and expect to get constructive and honest feedback. It's just like any public square, if it's not now, it surely will be. It's more about acting and persuasion skills. Nearly all development and building discussion between colleagues and teams happens in a controlled space. Nostr by definition is an uncontrolled space.
Doing either is anti social. Finding a smaller community or friends is the only social part imo.

BREAKING: United States EPA Criminal department drops all criminal investigations relating to emissions tampering under the clean air act (January 22, 2026)
In a Twitter post (I can't find) they stated they wanted to "avoid overcriminalization of federal environmental law"
Those of you who are new, the US Department of justice made a branch called Environment and Natural Resources Division that acts under the EPA. They had been pursuing business's of any size and even individuals suspected of tampering or defeating emissions systems on vehicles.
This is big news for my friends in the industry who, overnight, simply had their criminal cases dropped. They get to go home, or go back home to see their families without the fear of going to or back to federal prison.
This still means that
- the EPA can still financially ruin you, your family, and your friends
- its not magically legal to tamper/modify vehicle management or emissions systems
- the fines... sorry I mean penalties, won't be any more reasonable
- if the penalties grow large enough you could still face prison time
(BTW your culpability is rated on some imaginary scale which is not up for dispute...)

You should take a look at the past handful of EPA administrators and their views on the role of absolute government power "to save lives".
The clean air act of 1972 gives administrators full reign over regulation decisions, not congress. Since at least 2016 or some time slightly before that, the EPA was made part of the Department of Justice.

There are far more requirements for EPA, it's focused on emissions output not fuel consumption. But yes, it's based on fleet weight/size. There is a reason almost all domestic car manufacturers stopped making/selling sedans and coupes over the past 5 years. There is also a reason why almost all cars made since 2020 are the same egg shape with wheels.
There was a somewhat accurate documentary about fleet emissions and why vehicles in the US got larger. The EPA emissions standards are impossible to achieve, by design, so like any sane business owner who wants to continue doing business, they pivot.
All to do with fleet emissions vs weight. It's also the same reason RAM exists. RAM was a Dodge trim level. Chrysler lost an EPA criminal case (for like the 4th time) and some execs went to prison. They declared bankruptcy, and then sold off their brands to Stellantis who I beleive was responsible for splitting the brands to help with fleet emissions.

Honestly not sure I'm ever going to build another consumer parts-based workstation ever again. It's always been fun building custom PCs, but price vs stability has gotten so bad imo. For someone that relies on a machine to work 7/365 I've never gotten that from consumer parts. I'll probably still build custom rigs for other purposes, but I think I need to leave my main workstation alone.

I could see like on a college campus, or like a dense apartment building, but even then you'd probably use other apps, or go knock on your neighbor's door if the network is down. That said, even college campus have close circuit networks with redundancy, and we all have cell service. So a lot would have to go wrong, and again to the part where I go knock on the door of my neighbor.
I think I'm simply calling it a novelty and nothing else.

But all of those use cases are better suited for my voice and hearing sense. Bluetooth at crowded locations further shortens the range to the point id have to be within speaking range. If I was at a campground a wifi hotspot mode its probably even better suited (or ad-hoc wifi network on android devices).
Most of these cases make no sense unless your scared to speak with other humans.

Sure, but for totally different classes and threat models. Bearer tokens are generated after authentication, granted for resource authorization, scoped and short lived. If I gain access to either secp256k1 secret key all data _ever_ sent or ever _will be_ be sent with the same keys is now mine.

The reason I couldn't get on a plane 5 years ago without getting a strip search and a groping is the same reason I assume I'm actively monitored by at least one nation state... For what? I wish I knew.
I just try to have things that can't be used against me. I keep a physical receipt from any place I can, incase I ever need to prove my whereabouts. The issue is often that when an agency raids your house they take everything and you have to fight to get it back. Meaning they could easily tamper with your ability to defend yourself. You need multiple copies of things in different places.
It's also useful to be awake between 4-6 AM on routine incase they try to kick your door in XD

Until they are monitored. I never though I did anything that warranted government surveillance, but I found myself in an industry who routinely had their online accounts monitored, devices "tapped", surveillance camera systems monitored, communications monitored (email and phone systems). They simply went to Google, Vonage, and cloud providers and said: "hey company X is under investigation by the EPA, we'll need access to X service, you cannot disclose this to the customer."
They have the ability to monitor employees too. Depends on how big the company is, as to how big of a target your actions are.

I think the common pitfall is many assume you can still have the same level of conveniences simply with more security. I'm here to suggest it's not worth the effort. Finding alternatives to the same things often just complicates your life without adding any net increase in privacy/security. As long as you're working against natural human behavior, you're going to lose.
For example, drinkers can become pot smokers when they want to quit. Pot smokers can become drinkers when they need to get clean for a new job. They substitute one vice for another to get the singular outcome they require for the moment while maintaining a similar level of "relief" but still having the same level of DUI risk. (remember this an example lol)
So long as your device has a radio, I don't care how much nerds will sell you on buzzwords, like linux, encryption, and tor, lora, mesh networks, etc. If it generates a signal, it can be tracked, it just matters how that applies to your life.
It doesn't matter if you cover your face or change your clothes, your gate identifies you no matter where you go. There isn't enough entropy in all human behavior to make it untraceable. If you're too random, you're unique and therefor traceable. If you're too similar you're tracked with the herd, so anytime you step out, you're again unique and traceable.
On the few podcast episodes I did, I wanted to get across to the audience that the human behavior aspect. You could use any anti-tracking tool in the world, but if you open your browser at the same time every day, and look the same stuff up with the same tools, you've once again been identified.
Now some of this is completely true. Some of this is only true if attention is paid to you. Right now... I'm arguing that a future exists where we're our human behavior is monitored by so many metrics, that it doesn't matter what you use, so long as it generates signals you're behavior is identifiable.
I'm suggesting focusing on how you can control your interaction with tech. Limit the information that can be traced. It can be done, not all hope is lost, and not every action is futile, but if you don't understand what's being tracked, you can never fully understand how to protect yourself. You'd just be like everyone else in the cyber crowd that jumps from VPN or Email service every few years when they learn the service had a compromise or a bad privacy policy.
So my advice is, If you're in tech for a living, you should really invest some time into how things really work. If you're not in tech limit your interaction as much as possible.

Please do. I've heard mixed results for different reasons on them. People I know who have ordered them didn't keep them, they had problems with them. Problems I hope they work out eventually. They were power users expecting the functions to work as advertised. They hated the screen, keyboard quality, and lack of just about every other comparable feature for the price. They knew they were going to pay a premium for it, but they felt the price was too high for the usability.
I imagine if you don't rely on it for work in any way, they're probably enough, but again to spend that kind of money on something you'll use once a week for 3-4 years before you throw it out or sell it is kind of nuts too.

I also don't use wifi for these reasons. I disabled the wifi modem in firmware on my laptop and use an ethernet adapter. Id remove it but I hate taking apart modern laptops, I almost always break them.

Yeah price is about right these days. Hopefully it works out, decent cedar should last 15+ years assuming you don't live in a swamp and they use good posts when installing. Id get a friend who is a wood nerd sometime and ask them when to re-treat it. Some will say never, but in my experience it will always rot. So at some point id power wash it good then seal it. Probably get another 5-10 years out of the boards, maybe not the posts.

I got into tech from the ground floor, electronics and circuits. Working my way up, I realized unless I write it all myself 99.999% of devs don't see every one of these issues a problem, nor a problem they can solve. It compounds. The only solution I can see right now, is to opt out.
I don't don't want a Google device, I don't like them, I don't want to pay Google a dime. So I'm left with basically no options for a usable smartphone base. That's the TLDR.
In college I worked with a team that was building a device to track packets. What we learned is that so long as a device had a radio in it and the radio/modem was powered on, we could know your physical proximity to a single array antenna within about 2 meters. Since then I realized there is no way out.
I then learned how digital radios work, wrote firmware for them. Any antenna with an amplifier can pick up signals the analog end is tuned to. It's the system (os/driver) developer's job to filter out useless information. Which means that so long as you have a radio tuned to the same frequency everyone else is using (wifi, bluetooth, 4G-5G) the modem sees every packet that matches the preamble and decides to handle it, or drop it. So every wifi device, for example, reads every wifi packet from every device in it's radius. It sees the hardware (mac address) of every device and decides to pass it or discard it.
If you wanted to listen, it's called promiscuous mode, most wifi hardware supports it and most linux and windows network drivers support it. You can install a program right now, on any wifi enabled linux device, and see the approximate proximity (based on rssi) and the hardware address of every wifi enabled device around you. You could record all day long. You can know who is driving by your house, how often, what direction they were headed (and approximately how fast they were going) if they stopped at a red light, or even how much wireless activity was happening and then suggest they were using their phone while parked. No special hardware required.
If you have a radio, it can be monitored.
If you record audio, they can recover the 60hz (and harmonics) noise from the power grid and determine your approximate location and time.

Not the same office, but similar issue with websites being down, and get this, the office was only open between 1-4pm on Thursdays. It's state government office. They expect everything do be done on their app now. The hold music on the phone is just a voice telling poor people how to get a smarphone, how to get financial aid to pay for the phone service, and how to use their app. It's crazy.

This is my point yes. "Rich" people don't have 9-5s. If you can afford to be unavailable, for many hours of the day, because they're offline, that's a different level of wealth. If you can afford a lifestyle that allows you to get in your car and drive to the nearest library, during open hours, (if you still have any) doesn't require a smartphone with nfc to get in, lets you browse for cross-stitching an sewing books, check out, read, then execute. That's your entire evening. Cost wear on the car, risk, insurance, traffic, annoyances, gasoline, and time with your family.
If a IT issue happened at the office, the on call guy gets a call, he wakes up, gets ready and drives into the office, anywhere from 10-60 minutes away lets say. That entire time systems are down. Now, if you're not at your workstation in 5 minutes from the time of the call it's a problem. You have a work laptop in your house, you're logging on from _your_ office.
Also I recently went DVD shopping again at the local thrift stores and they all want between $3-4 for a single CD, DVD or BlueRay. That's insane! I've only gotten lucky at estate sales with lot boxes or auctions. It's far more expensive to use CDs/DVDs than it is to use online services.

This. This is what I mean.
I mean it's going to a symbol of "the rich" if you are able to participate in society without being online. I'm not only talking about "free time" spent online. Jobs that require your time on a screen, also often require excess amounts of tracking and personal information. Just because your using a tool to do a job, or watching videos for leisure, doesn't mean it's not affecting you.
It's a social thing. I already get attitude from family/friends that I can't do things like
- watch a youtube video
- listen to spotify
- scan a QR code
- hell, even web search a thing
People get really upset when you're different. It doesn't help that I have an defiant attitude toward it, but I try not to project it, in person.

And just about every retired person I know (most don't retire till their 70s) spends a significant portion of their time on facebook. They do often socialize, mostly drive around town slowly and cause traffic backups though. Florida got too expensive so they can't afford to leave anymore XD Probably a poor area type of thing.

Also _my_ point. It's nearly impossible to communicate with the outside world without the internet in some form. Even life without a smartphone is physically difficult let alone socially difficult. I'm literally a walking, sometimes talking, edge case.
I carry cash - stores don't have humans anymore.
I don't carry a smartphone - restaurants only have QR code menus, or event's requiring tickets don't use physical tickets anymore.
The local subway/train this year dropped all non-smartphone ticketing systems. They require a smartphone with internet, NFC, and GPS from what i've been told to ride the subway.

A partial point exactly. It's the same conversation I make about influencers. They make their living by paying someone else to run their social media pretending to be them, never opening the apps themselves. They expect us all to play the game without playing the game themselves.

Offline is going to be a symbol of the "rich". Those who can afford to be off devices. So many jobs (even blue collar) require interacting with smart phones for the day job. Interacting with banking, ordering food, paying for stuff. Having to pay inflation prices for experiences, travel, etc.

Then that must mean the bridge is generating events with identifiable information. So y'all would be right, the events could be filtered out.
I use an old-ass build of nostrudel most of the time, so I can't see these, or probably don't interact with any bridge folks.

Good question, not sure. But in any case, if any relay federates with the bridge, those event's are spread viraly. So unless the event data itself contains identifiable information it's a waste of resources trying to track down the event source.

I don't disagree, but clean statistics often require a healthy amount of personally identifiable (traceable) metadata. If we can build a statistics chart, we can pretty easily track individual users. I think that's why most client devs should be against this.
My signer, for example, forcibly strips some identifiable information like client tags, before it signs them.

Gotcha, I'm unfamiliar with the event's most popular bridges create at the moment.
For example, neither my client nor yours, generate any client-related metadata. Bridges could just turn that feature off.

Event's are events. Unless we can determine where they're coming from (assuming clients bridges are announcing themselves) in the signed event data, it can't be filtered.

It's not just your own beliefs, it's everyone you interact with as well. Healthcare doesn't care, your landlord doesn't care, DMV doesn't care, your electric company doesn't care.
Sure you can fix many of these things if you find reasonably priced land in the woods, have some really high paying cash or bitcoin based work, don't live in a natural disaster or flood zone, have the tools/equipment to build everything yourself because you can't get/have insurance.
- Cash doctors are thousands of dollars/month (assuming you never need surgery or emergency care)
- Most US states require some type of personal liability insurance if driving a vehicle on the road
- You still owe property taxes, or again, they will come remove you from YOUR property
I know homesteaders that "opt out" but these are the real limitations. The only solution to them is have lots of extra money to pay your fines, pay your doctors cash, hope you and your family stay in very good health, and you have enough physical strength 24/7 to do the work necessary to raise your animals, maintain your crops, dig your wells, have local to trade with, tools to harvest materials to build your buildings and storage etc.
It all hinges on a strong man, an "traditional valued" housewife, and nearly perfect health for every person in the household for decades. OR lots of money.

You don't pay taxes (even if it's not your fault)
- At worst they come to your house with guns, rip you out and throw you in prison
- At best, you can never get a non-cash job opportunity. Your wages must be garnished by employers, which makes you not only a risky hire, but also a complicated one and can often be turned down from a position. Smaller business do this all the time. Ask husbands who refuse to pay child support. You can't take many forms of new debt, difficult to start a business etc. Depends on the agency taxes are owed to.

My entire month of December. I missed every deadline. Can't wait to pay even more fines.
Most of the issue is that the local USPS hub got messed up and delayed government mail (only guberment mail btw) by 2 weeks. That's still our responsibility btw.
For one issue I was told they can't help me an I should file a suit if I think the fines are unjust. In the meantime fines will continue to accrue interest and INFLATION surcharges. That's right WE have to pay for inflation, that THEY'RE creating.
I'm confident state and local government agencies are more corrupt (or at least in ways that affect us more directly as citizens) then our federal government.
